Guest Cerebus Report post Posted January 12, 2005 Link: New York, NY, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Former Clinton aide Sandy Berger is under U.S. grand jury investigation for the removal of documents from the National Archives, the New York Post reports. The investigation into why Berger illegally sneaked top-secret documents out of the archives has been quietly progressing for months. At the time Berger was Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry's top foreign policy adviser. "It may have been off the front pages, but the investigation has been active," said a source told the Post. Berger admitted he removed as many as 50 top-secret documents from the archives, calling it an an "honest mistake" made while he vetted documents for the Sept. 11 commission's inquiry into the terror attacks on New York and Washington. He also acknowledged he destroyed some documents, but claimed it was by accident. The pilfered documents were classified "Code Word," the highest security classification, above Top Secret. Some Republicans, including House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., have charged the documents were taken because they might embarrass the former president. The investigation, which has been characterized as "a criminal probe," is being conducted by career prosecutors at the Justice Department, sources said. What utter horseshit. An "honest mistake"? "Accidently destroyed"? These are the lamest excuses I've ever heard in my life! In the NMITC we went over what was expected us when handling sensitive documents more times than I would ever want to count. I guess I missed the class where they told us we could smuggle them out in our pants and socks and "accidently" destroy them. If Berger doesn't get the book thrown at him I give up on this classification system. I barely have any confidence in it as it is (seeing that the CIA & Bush admin both leak like shitty faucets). Though something tells me this will be quietly swept under the rug.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2005 This story made me crazy when it broke, not the least of which being how the Democrats - some, even, on this board - made it seem as if what he did was no big thing. I hope this is one of those RARE occasions where someone does get the book thrown at them, but I'm not holding my breath. Because if I do I may die.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2005 It would have been funnier if he shred them, ate them with ketchup and then claimed he had a mental disease that makes him have the urge to shred sensitive documents and eat them. Cause that defense would have been more believable than, "I accidently stuffed them in my pants and destroyed them when I got home...it could have happened to anybody!" I'm not entirely sure what the penalty is for destroying documents. Is there a penalty?
