Guest TheLastBoyscout Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 Wrap your head around that one, why don't you? Clint's been not only one of the best directors in America, but also one of the ebst actor/directors ever. What can you say about a guy who has movies like: PLAY MISTY FOR ME HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES SUDDEN IMPACT PALE RIDER WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART UNFORGIVEN A PERFECT WORLD MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL MYSTIC RIVER MILLION DOLLAR BABY ...under his belt? UNFORGIVEN especially may very well be the equal of any Western made by guys like Howard Hawks and John Ford. Discuss.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 Wrap my head around that? I hate that fucking term with a huge fucking passion. anyways; his credentials speak for themselves with Unforgiven, A Perfect World, Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby.
godthedog Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 not one of the best directors ever, i'd say. he also made some extremely lightweight, forgettable crap.
Guest TheLastBoyscout Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 not one of the best directors ever, i'd say. he also made some extremely lightweight, forgettable crap. Any director who's made a lot of movies at all has made a bunch of crap.
Henry Spencer Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 not one of the best directors ever, i'd say. he also made some extremely lightweight, forgettable crap. Any director who's made a lot of movies at all has made a bunch of crap. Hitchcock made a metric assload of movies, and maintained a pretty high consistancy of quality.
Insane Bump Machine Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 Hitchcock himself didn't like a lot of his earlier films. And he did make some forgettable stuff like Under Capricorn or Topaz (although I kinda liked that one). But still, Hitchcock is probably one of the most consistant directors. I agree with the topic, Eastwood is one of the best living Amercan directors. Scorsese is still ahead of him, but there's not much else. Altman maybe.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 Eastwood has made more mediocre or bad films than good films, but I suppose his good films are enough to make him ONE of the best current working. I have no clue where he would rank, but somewhere.
godthedog Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 i do like his meaty, functional style, which is part of his great sense of HOW to tell a story in the best standard manner possible, but he doesn't seem to have a great sense of judgment about WHAT kinds of stories are really worth telling. of those working today, i'd put payne, both andersons, scorsese, sofia coppola, polanski and zwigoff ahead of him.
Insane Bump Machine Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 payne, both andersons, scorsese, sofia coppola, polanski and zwigoff ahead of him. you mean Wes and Paul Anderson, not Paul W.S., right? Payne and Coppola don't really have a big body of work to judge their skills, haven't they. And if we're talking international directors we can't forget about guys like Wong Kar-Wai or Zhang Yimou, who are both bringing the goods with everything they're working on.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 No...GTD adores Alien Vs. Predator and Mortal Kombat: The Movie
Guest Boomer Sprinklespax Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Uh...QT, anyone? Aronofsky? Soderbergh, for christ's sake?
Black Lushus Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 did he direct Heartbreak Ridge also? If so, THUMBS UP!
Guest Boomer Sprinklespax Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Mario Van Peebles ruled in that flick.
Swift Terror Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 He did direct Heartbreak Ridge "damn, this guy's hardcore...I know, wait till Swede gets here, he'll take care of him" "swede, swede, swede, swede, swede, swede" Swede, after getting ass kicked by Clint: "Sorry sir, I'll report to the brig."
Guest M. Harry Smilac Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Unforgiven was great. Mystic River and anything else was pretty forgettable. Eastwood was a great actor but he brings nothing special to the table when it comes to directing. Unforgiven is the only one i'd call great and that's probably more to do with working with Leone in the past and learning from the master.
Black Lushus Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 yeah i would have to call Mystic River one pretty overrated movie with an actor trying TOO hard to win Best Actor that year...
Ripper Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Unforgiven was a great movie to me. And Bridges of Madison County ownz you bitches and you know it. Stop leaving it off. Clint is a great director, but mostly to his minimalist approach to it. He doens't try to do anything dynamic. Thats why he is so good. But as mentioned in this thread, there are quite a few better today let alone ever.
