Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2005 Jags lock up Stroud for 5 years Stroud, Jags agree on five-year extension Defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, one of the most dominating interior linemen in the NFL, now has a contract to match his status as one of the league's burgeoning young stars. Stroud on Thursday signed a five-year contract extension through 2010 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, making the the four-year veteran the NFL's highest paid player at his position. The extension was negotiated by agent Drew Rosenhaus. This is what I wanted because, honestly, I felt like I was the best tackle in the league," said Stroud, who has made the Pro Bowl squad the past two seasons, early Thursday evening. "The thing I have to do now, though, is play up to the contract. A lot of guys, they get a deal like this, and they think it's over. For me, the responsibility has just begun. I can get even better, be a more dominant player, and that is what I intend to do." There was one year remaining on Stroud's original NFL contract, signed when he was the Jaguars' first-round choice in the 2001 draft, and he was scheduled under that deal to have a base salary of $2.12 million for 2005. The six-year contract that results from the new extension totals $31.5 million. There is an initial signing bonus of $6.5 million and then, five days after the contract is officially executed, Stroud will receive a $3.2 million roster bonus. A second roster bonus, worth $2.5 million, is due on March 1, 2006. Stroud, just 26, already pocketed a roster bonus of $300,000 last month that was part of his original contract. The contract's base salaries are $540,000 (2005), $545,000 (2006), $1.415 million (2007), $5 million (2008), $5.5 million (2009) and $6 million (2010). The base salaries for 2005 and 2006 are guaranteed and Stroud can earn $100,000 in offseason workout bonuses in each of the first three years of the extension. So between the 2005-2007 seasons, Stroud will earn $15 million, with nearly all of that in guaranteed money. In terms of the per-year average over the entire term of the contract, the deal tops the one signed last year by Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Both Stroud and Rosenhaus acknowledged the timing of the extension was key. Had the star defensive tackle played out his original contract, and extension talks stalled, the club might have used the franchise designation on Stroud next spring. That would have limited Stroud's mobility and could have led to some acrimony. Rosenhaus has been working on the extension with Jacksonville officials, principally vice president Paul Vance, for several months. A former University of Georgia star, Stroud has appeared in 64 games and started 48 of them, including every outing in the past three years. He has 322 tackles, 13½ sacks, seven forced fumbles and two recoveries. He and John Henderson, the team's first-round pick in 2002, form the NFL's most imposing young tackle tandem. JustJoe2k5 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2005 They already have Derrick Mason, and if TO didn't like Garcia and Mcnabb, he'll hate Boller. One team that has some cap room, has a strong-armed QB with a wide open passing game, and is in need of a WR: Minnesota. I'm sure Randy Moss would love that, "You get rid of me because I cause controversy, good idea to bring in Terrell Owens to take my place." I think Minnesota is content with taking either Braylon Edwards or Mike Williams in the draft, and they already have a roster full of underrated receivers. I think Minnesota is content with taking either Braylon Edwards or Mike Williams in the draft, and they already have a roster full of underrated receivers. Here's how I would handle TO, and why I think he could work in Minnesota. The Vikings can basically make a Super Bowl push this year based on their vastly improved defense. They can pay TO a massive signing bonus, keep under the cap, and have enough passes going his way to keep him happy. They make their push to the Superbowl, and if all goes well they win. The next day, they cut TO. He's a rental player now, it seems like he will shit disturb no matter what team he is on. The guy can't be counted on to be long term, but hey, he doesn't have to know that. Meanwhile, the Vikings could still grab Mike Williams to groom behind whomever they have in the receiving corps. You're almost certainly right about the Vikes being much happier with Edwards or Williams, but I can pipe dream.

the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 I love being a fan of a team that is in the same division of the Redskins Redskins trade for Broncos 1st round pick They give up a 3rd this year, and a 1st and a 4th next year for the Broncos #25 pick in this year's draft. That is moronic. Their 1st round pick is going to be in the first half of the draft again next year (a draft which looks like it will be stacked with many more elite level prospects). And for what, a nice player that will likely be available at #25? I don't see how anyone could think someone at #25 is worth that haul.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 How does Vinny Cerrato still have a job? Also pinjockey, you see the Birds moving up again this year? I'm torn on thinking if they will or wont..
tominator89 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 With all those draft picks, they could easily afford to trade some of them.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 Raiders trade Phillip Buchanon to Texans for second and third-round picks this year. I'm not sure I really understand the trade fully from the Texans' perspective, unless the rumblings of them moving Aaron Gleen to safety in the near future are true after all. Here
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 I would be shocked if they did not move up somewhere. First of all, they probably couldn't afford to fit 13 picks into the rookie salary pool. So they will likely HAVE to shift some picks. I would also be very surprised if they didn't turn at least one or two picks this year into picks for next year. There is a lot of chatter about them moving into the late teens in round one (that has been their MO), but I wouldn't mind seeing them stay at 31 and 35 and then package their second 2nd rounder and a third rounder to move higher in the second round. They could easily grab 3 players in the top 45 if they went that route and they would still have a full plate of picks.
tominator89 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 Sorry to continue focusing on the Eagles, but what do you guys think about their WR and HB situation? WR - Mitchell is still trying to talk his way out of town - TO wants more money - Pinkston fears taking a hit - Kevin Johnson mentioned an interest in playing for Philly - Greg Lewis needs to be promoted - Do they draft a WR? - Trade Mitchell or TO, if so, for who/what position? HB - Westbrook does not have a long term deal - Buckhalter is back, but there are tons of risks - Possible trade for Bills' Henry? Wouldn't he want to start? - Draft a RB? I think they have some interesting decisions to make. The other thing I'd consider is moving Corey Simon. Walker, Rayburn, Grasmanis, and Hollis (who wants a new contract) should be fine as long as they are healthy.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 It just gets better and better. Not only do the Skins overpay for a pick, they also tip their hand days before the draft letting teams who want Jason Campbell know that they need to move up to get him now. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 If they don't trade for Henry, I would think the Eagles will take a day one RB (probably with the second 2nd rounder or first 3rd rounder). I am not worried about Westbrook, he will sign his tender and if he performs he will get taken care of. The WR position won't be a problem. TO will bitch and moan and bitch and moan then show up for the season and put up his numbers. There is nothing else he can do. Mitchell is gone, if they don't get a pick for him this weekend they'll cut him. They'll probably draft a WR coughMattJonescough. Greg Lewis is going to be the 3 this season so that is an upgrade and Pinkston will serve his purpose by catching one deep ball or drawing a PI call a game. Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted April 20, 2005 I think the Raiders gave up on Phil FAR to early. He was one of their only young studs on D (Harris the other one, and they traded him) Raiders are going to be HORRID on D this year. If Houston makes the proper picks this draft, this could be the year they make the jump.
Sass 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 Phillip Buchanon told the Raiders he wanted out after the end of the season. They obliged. Charles Woodson has also become a cancer and the team would like to trade him so they can get some draft picks. The deal for Buchanon will benefit both sides. Phil will be happy and the Raiders will be happy since they got draft picks that they can use to replace him. The Raiders have 2 picks in the 2nd round and 2 picks in the 3rd round now. That's better than having one pick in each round like they had before. If they trade Woodson to a team, the Raiders could get a possible 2 picks in the 1st round. They will get a 1st round pick for sure if Charles is traded. I hope Miami takes Woodson. Them or Detroit. The team could build a good Defense with this year's draft. Houston's O-line is still horrid but their Defense and Secondary is looking nice.
Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Who would you say has the best corner tandem in the leauge. To have two good corners allows the rest of the D to excell (see Surtain/Madison).I think the Ravens combo of Rolle/McAlister will allow the Ravens to do some great things on D this year. They plan to blitz alot and having two execellent CB's to leave on a island can make that possible. So who do you think ha the best tandem?
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Sheldon Brown/Lito Sheppard has to rank up there. And I just saw on the ESPN bottom line scroll that the Jets are trading their 1st round pick to the Raiders for Doug FUCKING Jolley. EDIT: Ok, it appears that they are also giving up their first 2nd round pick. That makes much more sense. Link
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 With this trade, the Jets are probably at the top of the list in the Andre Dyson running. Not too bad of a trade if they do sign Dyson, moving down around 21 spots and picking up a starting TE. Although I hope they trade up for Marlin Jackson with their extra picks. I'm also guessing that if they don't trade either 2nd round pick, one will be used on CJ Mosley. Not bad.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Being as the Redskins want Jason Campbell and all, I was thinking of something today. Green Bay will pick 24th, and they should be thinking of getting a successor to Favre. If I was Green Bay, I would leak some interest to the media in Campbell and see if you can milk an extra pick out of Washington for the 24th...
LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Don't forget Ed Reed in that Ravens secondary. The trio of Reed/Rolle/McCallister should terrorize QBs. Especially whoever the heck Cleveland starts. Don't the Cowboys need a corner? Maybe the Raiders could ship Woodson off to them for the Cowboys 2nd first rounder. Or even a 2nd rounder, they have to ditch Woodson. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Will people PLEASE stop with the "Oh the Packers have to select Brett Favre's heir" talk already! The guy is certainly not retiring anytime soon (although this topic seems to have come up every year since the moment he turned 30), and they already have a couple of young prospects they're looking at in Craig Nall (who played quite decently last year not only in preseason but as well in the games), J.T. O'Sullivan (who they traded McKenzie for because they were high on him.. and apparently something else), and MAYBE McPherson or Frye if they fall to their fourth pick. I still think their first three picks, which come in the first 58, need to be spent on defense, defense, defense... They need immediate impact players on the defensive side of the ball to go along with a consistent offense to get them a championship anytime soon. Oh, and as a sidenote, I'll be looking closely to seeing my Old high school teammate get drafted. He's only like the #6 or #7 rated fullback in the country now, but I always thought UCLA underutilized him since he really is a running back in a fullback's body as that thing describes him. He'd be an excellent 3rd down back to pick up for any team and use at both positions, but I'm just happy to see this guy make it to his dream. Anyone else know anyone they played with (or against, maybe) finally getting to the big leagues?
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Time to make VX's day, as I know he has much Eagles love. I could see him as an Eagle. He fits their scheme of wanting receivers out of the backfield. It plays well with his weaknesses as they rarely run the traditional I formation or anything where you need a dominant blocker at FB. Plus with Thomas Tapeh's career in the air they might look towards bringing in a FB, since Josh Parry sucked and all. I went to high school with a guy name Lewis Moore who went to Pitt and played LB. It was close on whether he would be drafted, but he wasn't. I think he signed on as a unsigned free agent with the Giants before being released after a couple of weeks, max. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted April 21, 2005 I'd like to see him as a Packer since William Henderson is getting on in years, and Luchey looks to be the solid replacement for him, but having some depth in the form of a hybrid runner (and they'll probably lose Davenport after this season anyways) would be nice. Either way, he'd be a second day draft pick. I owe him a lot and would have owed him even more had I not fucked up my ankle since he got the coaches to look past my size and use me as a third-down back and #2 on the depth chart right behind him in high school. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Anyone else know anyone they played with (or against, maybe) finally getting to the big leagues? Played against Tony Bua, who was a safety at Arkansas and became a 5th round pick/benchwarmer for the Dolphins last season. He killed us in football but I struck his ass out twice in baseball. Also Reggie White (not THAT Reggie White), who went to Ok St before falling off the face of the earth. He went to a couple of NFL camps, but I don't think he ever even made a practice squad. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2005 Well, Saban got his second round pick. Surtain was traded to the Chiefs for a 2nd round pick and a swap of fifth rounders.
