Suikoden IV

Recommended Posts

I do like discussing RPGs with my fellow console RPGers.

How good is SO3? I did enjoy the first two, but felt bogged down by the time I reached the end, Is this similar to SO3?

DQVII, supposedly for the hardcorest of the hardcores, can someone with a reasonable amount of time complete and enjoy this game?

Is fuckin Xenosaga going to satisfactorily tie into one of the best stories ever?(Xenogears) (no)

YOu know what pisses me off? all the fucking new RPG reviewers on every fuckin' site who dis square becaure it's cool, and in particular FFVII. Hey, guys, the reason Cloud is a cliche is because everyone in the world has now copied him! The depth of character in FFVII is tremendous (for an RPG). I'm not afraid to admit it. The leads were a amnesiac who has lost his purpose in life, and can't uncover his history. Tifa is a fully formed character as the completely shy, sad character who has to finally motivate the hero into action, and does so while being helped from her teammates who are also unique.

Randomly my list of top 5 RPGs. In order. Unless I change my mind.

FFIII

Chrono Trigger

Suikoden II

FFVII

Valkyrie Profile

Gaze upon it. You could play those games for eternity

I beat Suikoden IV last night. The IGN reviewer said something about a New Game+ so I'll have to check it out. It did ask to me to save after the credits.

SO3 is okay, but make sure to turn off the voices before you poke out your own eardrums. I also can't stand that bastard Fayt. But I thought it was funny when he kept dragging his injured friends out of bed, only to have them die on him. Serves him right.

Yeah I doubt it. There is still some debate whether it is even in continuity with the Xenogears. And if it is, it takes place roughly 10,000 years before it. So the absolute most you are going to get are the origins of Deus, Kain, etc.

I consider FFVII one of the middle ground Final Fantasy games, but there are some problems with it. First of all, I like Cloud's backstory, but personality-wise he is really dull. Even Squall you knew why he was doing what he was doing, but you never get anything like that from Cloud. Barrett is colourful. So is Cid & Yuffie (who is annoying, but at least shows something), and Red XIII is supposed to be dull. But after that the most interesting characters are all villains.

The materia system was bad. The ability to simply build up the materia and then move them to any character you want really stripped down the uniqueness of the characters. Sure in FFV, every character has the options open to them, but you build them up in a unique way throughout the game. In FFVII, you can swap in Vincent for Barrett, and the only things different about them are their Limit Breaks. I also hate the three person parties.

Finally, the graphics don't hold up at all today. VIII and beyond are okay and the earlier ones have this nostalgic quality about them. FFVII just ain't that pretty to look at it.

My Top 5 RPGS

1. Suikoden II

2. Final Fantasy VI

3. Xenogears

4. Final Fantasy Tactics

5. Suikoden III

I am not terribly surprised about this. I know, a few years back, I would often run into a few annoying reviewers that felt the need to mention how great FFVII was at least once a review. Also, if something in the game they were reviewing had even a slight resemblance to something in FFVII, they just HAD to point it out. Like, "OMG! This one random enemy vaguely resembles something in FFVII! THIS GAME IS A FFVII RIPOFF!" It was unintentionally hilarious, if, at times, insufferable. Of course, as someone who extremely disliked FFVII, I am glad that times have, apparently, somewhat changed.

anyway, my top 5:

1) Suikoden II

2) Thousand Arms

3) Legend of Legaia

4) Wild Arms 2

5) Final Fantasy X

Thousands Arms as your second liked RPG?!

...explain how the fuck that is. I honestly wanna know.

Well, for one, I don't play that many RPG's(besides those five, I can only think up maybe 5 more that I even ended up completing.)

As for why I liked it, I found the whole "RPG parody" thing to be quite humorous, like going up to some random villager, and they tell that they wish they had a voiceover or complaining about these adventurers always stealing their stuff. ot to mention, I loved the argument that two of the female got into in the game, which is probably why I rated it so high.

I'll admit that the game had several flaws. For instance, I can't remember the ending at all, and I remember they wasted too much time on things that ended up never going anywhere (Like when they tried to build a relationship between two of the supporting characters, even wasting an entire cut scene on it, only to never mention it at the end.)

I just view it more as a comedy RPG, which covers up a lot of its faults in the story to me. Besides, I had a lot of fun playing it, which is something I can't say for a lot of games I played. Maybe I rated it too highly, but it served its purpose for me.

Thank you for the explanation. I didn't really care for it in terms of anything else besides the parody, so I was kinda stunned seeing on your list.

Nothing wrong with that, just had a WTF moment when I saw it.

Regarding Thousand Arms: The last boss was hilariously underdeveloped and hammy. 'I will be a GGGGOOOOODDDD.'

It was good enough that I played it through the whole way, but nothing special. I don't even remember the combat AT ALL.

I hope FFXII is good. They seem to be taking lots of time with it. Setting it in the FFTA world gives me a sense of forboding though.

If anyone like Strategy RPGs and emulates I highly reccomend a damn good game that was only released in Europe: Der Langrisser.

Sequel to a very good and very difficult SRPG released over here as Warsong.

Well, the new person at the helm of FFXII has gone to great lengths to actually build Ivalice (by like actually going to Europe to study the buildings and culture), so there's a little hope that they might churn out something.

And ah, Langrisser. I've heard of its praise, but haven't played it.

...and we RPGers have yet again, sidetracked yet another sole RPG thread. Geezus.

I obtained a copy of Suikoden 4 (free, I wasn't going to pay for it). The main character looks like he has a mop on his head. He runs like a constipated retard. The ship travel is pretty horrid due to the invisible "walls" around islands. The graphics are terrible (who said the graphics were good above? This game is much worse graphically than Shadow Hearts Covenant or FFX, and FFX is like 3 years old). The gameplay is alright, but nothing special...not nearly as interesting as SHC, FFX, etc...heck, all the characters seem very similar gameplay wise, there's just a lot more of them.

I do like the idea of finding and appraising various items, that's kind of neat. And the massive amount of characters doesn't exactly hurt. The encounter rate is high, but the battles are quick enough that it isn't a bother. This is the first Suikoden I've played, is it representative of the series?
