Capcom Press Event

Devil May Cry 3, Haunting Ground, Beat Down, Without Warning.

By Christian Nutt

Earlier this week at an event in Las Vegas, Capcom announced a number of new games for release in the U.S.

First up is the debut game from Circle Studios, a new developer started by ex-Core Design staff that worked on the Tomb Raider series. Called Without Warning, the game puts players into an action-shooter setting that experiments by telling its story through the same timeline via multiple character perspectives. The developers cite inspiration from the television show 24 and the game will ship for PS2 and Xbox in the third quater of 2005.

Capcom also debuted Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance, a free-roaming beat 'em up with a focus on building up a gang to fight alongside your main character. The game also features character customization aspects and a general structure similar to the Grand Theft Auto series. The game will ship for PS2 and Xbox.

Mega Man X Collection, following in the footsteps of the popular Mega Man Anniversary Collection, will collate installments of the well-known spin-off series into one handy installment. Capcom did not announce target platforms for this title, nor did they mention which Mega Man X games will make it onto the collection -- 1993's Mega Man X until 2004's Mega Man X8 make up the series thus far.

The company also announced the Capcom Classics Collection, a gathering of many classic games from the company's storied history, but declined to specify which just yet.

Further, Capcom announced a new feature for the U.S. version of Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower for PSP -- this collection of all the characters and moves from the popular fighting series will include four-player wireless play. The Japanese version includes only two-player play, making this a substantive improvement. Darkstalkers Chronicle will be available on PSP's U.S. launch day, March 24, 2005.

Finally, Capcom announced the U.S. release of Gyakuten Saiban for the Nintendo DS. This courtroom drama series has been a fan favorite in Japan for the Game Boy Advance since its debut in 2001, with many requests for a U.S. release. Developed under the guidance of Atsushi Inaba, creator of Viewtiful Joe and Steel Battalion, the Gyakuten Saiban series offers dramatic legal action, including investigation and courtroom scenes. A number of characters are confirmed for the DS version, including dashing young lawyer Phoenix Wright and psychic Maya Fey. The final U.S. title of Gyakuten Saiban is still up for grabs, but the game will hit the U.S. this summer, regardless of what it may be called.

Awesome. I'm iffy on Without Warning, considering the rep the Tomb Raider games have gotten, but ah well. I'll cross my fingers and hope that it was because of the immense pressure and unreasonable deadlines Eidos put them over that is to blame.

Beat Down sounds like a next-gen River City Ransom, so I'm game.

Mega Man X Collection? If it includes *at least* the first 3 games, I'm there, because I have X4 and X5; X6 is ass anyway. Metal Maniac--I'd try to get that X3 back and sell it before word spreads if I were you.

Capcom Classics Collection? About freakin' time. I'm hoping it's mostly arcade ports. I'd like to see the 194X games, Slam Masters, the Ghouls n' Ghosts games, some of their better beat 'em ups, The Punisher (unlikely considering they dont' have the license, though), Gun Smoke for the hell of it, and other goodies.

Vampire Chronicles 4 player? I guess they're adding tag-teaming. Cool.

But--Mega Man X collection? Where the Fizuck is the MMAC for Game Boy, damnit! It's been delayed a whole freakin' year now! Plus your US website sucks, Capcom!

As long as this stays the hell away from State of Emergency territory, I'm very hyped at the possibilities.

And a courtroom drama video game? Damn, the Japanese never cease to amaze me.

Why not release Street Fighter Vs. series as a collection?

EA has the Marvel license now, not Capcom.

The most they could do, considering CVS2 is out on the three major consoles, is take perhaps CVS1's remixed version and slap it on a disc with...SVC Chaos (ick).

However, if they add online play Game Informer will likely give such a compilation at least an 8.

Considering some of the games that come out in Japan, that's totally mundane. :P

Although, wouldn't it require a hell of a reworking, considering that Japanese law is likely quite a bit different from U.S. law? It'd goes beyond most mere "localization," I'd imagine.

Beat Down looks to be promising if it has that old school, 16-bit 2D side scrolling beat-em-up feel. I love those types of games.

Mega Man X Collection is great for those of us who want to play the SNES versions on a console but sold our original cartridges back in 1997 to get money for a Nintendo 64 and don't want to pay ungodly prices to replace them. Plus I still haven't gotten tired of replaying the MM Anniversary Collection.

Andrew- Last I heard (at GameFAQs), MMAC for GBA was delayed until March 1st. However, some sources still say it "may" be cancelled. I really hope it comes out, though. I missed out on the Game Boy Mega Man games.

I'm sure the MMX collection will include at least 1 through 3. I hope they'll release it for Gamecube, as I believe the Anniversary Collection sold better on GC than PS2.

MMX collection is good.

Capcom collection needs classic arcade games. The thing that sucks about all the great beat em ups is that their based on licences. A compilation of AVP, Punisher, D&D and Cadilacks and Dinos would be great.

Pardon me while I go cry.

Get ready for years of shitty EA Marvel games. We'll always have X-Men vs. SF and MvC2.

MMAC GBA better NOT have been cancelled.

I put down money for a pre-order of that a week before the console version came out!

...though I could feasibly use it to buy a PSP, DS...or FINALLY buy a PS2...

"The mighty Mega will see daylight yet again thanks to Capcom's Mega Man X Collection, a title that combines seven Mega Man X games onto a single disc.

Capcom has not been forthcoming with the details, but acclaimed Studio 1 producer, Tatsuya Minami announced on Wednesday that Mega Man X Collection, a product that symbolizes the height of the Capcom platforming era, would release later this year. Though no further details were revealed, a brief video displayed showed the title in action. At least, we can only assume it was the title and not emulated or original versions of the Mega Man X games it promises to include.

The bundle will apparently be comprised of the first three SNES Mega Man X games as well as the PlayStation versions of Mega Man X4 through X6. Additionally, Capcom will include the import Mega Man Battle & Chase. This Japan and Europe only PSOne cart racing game was not approved for North American distribution by Sony, so it should be quite a treat for fans of the series that shy away from imports"

Both are essentially the same. They have the same games, features, etc.

I have the GameCube version since I don't own a PS2, but a lot of people prefer the PS2 version since the one on the Cube has the jump and shoot buttons switched (B is jump, A is shoot). But even I, a Mega Man devotee since the NES days, was able to get used to the flipped GC controls rather quickly.

Still, if you have both systems, the PS2 edition is probably your best bet.

Despite the button switch, I say that the Cube version is better.

If just for the extras...with a special inverview/bio film replacing the first ep of the US Mega Man cartoon.

As for the X Collection...YES!

Now if it comes out for the cube, I can delete the ROMs of MMX 1-3 on my computer and no longer have to try playing the game with a keybard.
