American Dad

I really don't know what I thought about that. I think it's too much like Family Guy and the dad has too many Peter moments.

Though I did laugh my ass off at the Middle Eastern couple.

EDIT: I think I'd give it somewhere around a C.

Nothing really stuck out to me at all. I mean it had it's funny moments, but they could have just as easily stuck every one of those jokes in Family Guy and been fine. I'll give it a shot though, FG started off kinda rocky too.

It was alright - I'll watch it.

I noticed the voice actor that was used for the son in the internet pilot a few months back was changed. I liked the original one better (pretty sure it was Seth originally).

That's the other thing that bugged me. He tried way too hard to recreate the Family Guy cast with this show.

I never saw the internet pilot, but when I saw the character descriptions last week I thought there were too many similarities with FG.

Rather hit and miss, I also give it a C/5.0/whatever grading system have you

I liked the show, but I think it'll take a few more episodes until the general audience starts to "connect" with the characters. I can easily see this show becoming a hit, though.

There were some pretty funny moments, mainly when the dad did the purse-snatching routine, the IKEA in Iraq bit, and the son riding the mascot.

However, there were some pretty big stretches in there and the alien's voice just didn't seem right. (It seemed right as Cleveland's voice in Family Guy but, for anyone other than a big black guy, it just sounds too gay)

1) wasn't he working on this after FG was cancelled and before he found out that fox realized FG was ratings and refinanced new eps?

2) FG's pilot had a few laughs but a shows first season usually isn't it's best. That goes double for the pilot.

The fish and the alien have to go or get better voice actors.

I'll have to see a little more of the fish, but I kinda enjoyed the Charles Nelson Reily-esque voice for the alien.

I had some laughs, but for the most part, it could have been Family Guy stuff. This show will probably be reserved for the more political stuff and the kids are slightly different enough to make different storylines out of them. The alien had some moments, but seemed very similar to Brian on Family Guy.

We'll see where it goes in May, but I felt since the announcement of this show it'll be like Futurama is to the Simpsons, moderately successful, has it's moments, but not the same as the original.

It was alright. I'm sure the episodes will pick up as the show progresses. I dig Stan's character and the political issues that surround the show, as well as Roger the Alien, whose voice is perfect and shouldn't be changed.

LOL moments:

"She'll be the future 'Mrs. Steve Smith'...yeah, i like the sound of that. "Steve Smith'."

The chase scene in the Mall

Bush talking to God

"Henry Kissenger: More than a Jew"

The big difference though was at least Groening aimed for something totally different with Futurama. This seems to be Seth carbon copying FG.

Like someone else said, I think the copying came from the fact that Seth intended for this to be FG2 before Fox actually decided to resurrect FG

It won't.

Fox was extremely stupid for starting this the same time and on the same night as Family Guy. It'll be liking having the same show on back to back.

Save for the animation and similar humour, how is American Dad a carbon copy of Family Guy?

It was alright. The Jack In The Box guy naked in the basement made the episode for me. The alien guy I don't mind but the gold fish needs to go.

I'm not being a Negative Nancy...I'm being a Sensible Shannon.

I was looking forward to really liking this, but I didn't get a single laugh out of it. And the show seemed like it was trying reeeeal hard.

Both shows feature a talking pet who has a thing for the wife, a son who's a dork, and a daughter who doesn't fit in with the family. The father isn't as dumb as Peter and the wife didn't seem to do much, but if you're gonna use the same style for animation AND humour, the least you could do is try to make very different characters.

The first thing that stood out to me was the almost exact same family makeup, with the out-of-it Dad, two teen kids and alien taking the place of Brian (the goldfish, so far, seems useless IMO and I think the show could do without it).

The situation with school also reminded me of Peter getting involved with Meg and Chris's school in his own wacky ways.

You could try to chalk it up to "a series of mere coincidences", but considering the source, it's hard to discount them at the same time.

EDIT: Maniac also made some good points

The characters are very similar except for the mom:

Stewie/gold fish: Only difference is their attitude towards the mom.

Alien/Brian: The Alien holding a glass of whine towards the end made him very similar to Brian.

The daughter is just Meg injected with Lisa Simpsons liberal ideals.

The sons are both just geeks.

There were time when the dad was acting exactly like Peter would in the same situation.

I think the mom will end up being revealed as the real family center behind the big tough dad, just like Lois and Marge have been the centers of strength in their families rather than the dad

The talking pets are two entirely different characters. Brian's thing for Lois was only for one episode.

a son who's a dork

But he isn't dim-witted and fat like Chris. They convey different humour.

and a daughter who doesn't fit in with the family

Much like all sitcom family daughters. Besides that common trait, they're nothing alike.

The father isn't as dumb as Peter and the wife didn't seem to do much

The wives seem to be the most similiar, but she wasn't really a focal point of the show and hasn't really developed a character yet. Peter and Stan are polar opposites.

It's an entirely different cast of characters and a show that relies on topical/political humour rather than flashbacks. I think it'll do well and remain distinct from FG.
