Guest MikeSC Report post Posted February 14, 2005 I sense this is headed toward another "who has more crime, US or Canada"..... I see this headed towards a "The south actually had to FACE its racism". -=Mike ...I'm the only one who seems to think a black woman can win the WH. Odd, huh? EricMM 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 The reason northeners don't think a black PERSON or any woman will ever get the WH is because we have ZERO faith in Southerners not to be ignorant. Zero.
Guest MikeSC Report post Posted February 14, 2005 The reason northeners don't think a black PERSON or any woman will ever get the WH is because we have ZERO faith in Southerners not to be ignorant. Zero. Because northerners NEVER had racial problems. Boston NEVER had race riots over school busing. Suure. You can never go broke betting on the ignorance of northerners. -=Mike
Guest sek69 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Anyone who thinks the South has faced its racism is just deluded. Just because the Klan doesn't have free range anymore doesn't mean the south is completely devoid of racism. If anything, it's probably worse because at least the Klan is pretty up front about their racism. Most people now just would stay home than vote for a black woman for president. Guest MikeSC Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Anyone who thinks the South has faced its racism is just deluded. Or somebody who ACTUALLY lives here and DEALS with this regularly. Just because the Klan doesn't have free range anymore doesn't mean the south is completely devoid of racism. Who said it was completely devoid of racism? I said it's a minor issue, at best, down here. If anything, it's probably worse because at least the Klan is pretty up front about their racism. Most people now just would stay home than vote for a black woman for president. Don't project your issues upon others. The only reason a black has not come close to being President is that there has yet to be a candidate who wasn't a blithering idiot. Get a good, solid, brilliant candidate who ALSO happens to be black and he or she will win elections easily. -=Mike
Guest sek69 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Don't project your issues upon others. Oh stop. Yeah, I'm a big sheet-wearing racist, thats's why I'm a liberal Democrat. Assuming what you're saying is true and racism isn't a big deal where you live, do you really see good ol' boys in Alabama and Mississippi voting for Condi in 2008? And before you make another post about it, yes there is racism in the north states. Hell there was nearly a race riot here in Pittsburgh after the cops killed a black guy. News flash: racism happens everywhere. It just seems to be more institutionalized in the south.
Guest MikeSC Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Don't project your issues upon others. Oh stop. Yeah, I'm a big sheet-wearing racist, thats's why I'm a liberal Democrat. Liberal Dems can be quite racist, like it or not. Assuming what you're saying is true and racism isn't a big deal where you live, do you really see good ol' boys in Alabama and Mississippi voting for Condi in 2008? I've picked her to win the GOP nomination since about 2002. Yes, I think MS and AL will vote for her happily. And before you make another post about it, yes there is racism in the north states. Sek, you don't know a thing about the South. Don't pretend to understand anything down here. -=Mike
EricMM 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Or are you going to try and argue that the south has somehow had LESS racism in it's history than the north? I KNOW we have racists here in MD, and I KNOW there are racists as far north as Maine. But I also KNOW that the south has always been and always will be worse than the north as far as race relations go. I'm sure the last racist man will be a southerner. Guest MikeSC Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Or are you going to try and argue that the south has somehow had LESS racism in it's history than the north? I'm arguing it had JUST AS MUCH as the North in the past --- and that, unlike the North, we had to come to grips with it and deal with it. I KNOW we have racists here in MD, and I KNOW there are racists as far north as Maine. But I also KNOW that the south has always been and always will be worse than the north as far as race relations go. I'm sure the last racist man will be a southerner. And I know you're wrong. I've lived up north. I've lived down south. The racism up north was markedly worse. -=Mike

Guest MikeSC Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Out of curiousity, where in the South do you live? South Carolina. And I lived right outside of Atlantic City in NJ. Racial tension in NJ was thick --- odd, considering how few blacks actually lived there. -=Mike

Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Having lived in both the North and South (as far north as upstate NY, and as far south as central Virginia), the South is far worse. Northern VA is quite tolerant, however. That's not saying much, though, considering it's the technology basin.

Even though "Northern VA" is not? Hmm, OK. -=Mike
Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 Northern VA is a mixing pot of races. Whites are actually a minority there. If you're a racist, you're not going to get anywhere. However, having lived in the Richmond/Lake Anna area, it's far, far worse than both upstate New York and Northern VA. It's just a fact of hearing how people speak, getting their beliefs about political issues (for example, one of the #1 issues in Central VA is immigration, especially since the economy is driven around service industries like construction), and that sort of thing. Hey, to their credit, though, they seem to have as much of a problem with Hispanics as they do with blacks.

Seems like basic common sense to me. -=Mike
Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 That's the worst spin I've ever seen, Mike. That's just pathetic. Their issue is with the fact that they're dirty and take people's jobs, not with "securing borders". They don't care if they're legal immigrants or not. They means the people I interacted with, of course. I'm not saying ALL SOUTHERNERS ARE RAYCISTS!~ or anything stupid like that, nor am I calling you a racist. However, in general, the farther South I've lived, the more racist the general public (that I've interacted with) is.

Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 I'm not sure that Rice's problem would be racism in the South, so much as I don't see her beating a popular southern born-and-bred politician like Bill Frist. EricMM 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2005 So every GOB southern Republicans will drop out of the race because they want to see Condi win? Because I have a feeling they'd win a lot of those states. Mike, I'm not shocked at all that you'd proclaim these things, given who you are, what you do, and what you say. But just check your history. Racism is eliminated the same way across the world. Slowly and over time. Single people rarely have such epiphanies that they become markedly better people, especially if they've had decades of negative education. My point is, the more racism existed, the longer it will stay. The best and IMO only countermeasure for not just POLICY racism but personal internal prejudice is simple exposure to people different from you. Thats why ALL of white-bread America is slightly prejudiced when it comes to minorities, from Jersey to Alabama. They don't get normal exposure. They the movies, TV, music, everything else. But back to my original point, I'd say that racism is "eliminated" from a society at a certain pace. If it had been eliminated from the South, a term synonomous with racism, it would have been long gone from the North. Perhaps synonomous is a slighly over-strong term. A word associated with racism however.
