How Come they never made it big?

Example of ECW Guys getting buried...

Rhyno - Barely 6'0", has one "move" (an even shittier tackle than Edge) and doesn't even look like someone that belongs in the midcard.

Tajiri - A cruiserweight who gets random pushes. Former multi-time CW and Tag Team Champion.

The Dudleyz - 5,503 tag title reigns. I rest my case.

Tazz - Started off alright, went dead thanks to a lot of new blood, and retired soon. He's carrying Cole on SD PBP though.

Raven - Midcard 4 Life in the Big companies, has cult following at Indy Shows. I don't agree with his treatment as a Jobber though.

Justin Credible - Justin Capableofhavingagoodmatch. Maybe he should've worn the jock strap again.

RVD - Exposed as not being a Main Event wrestler with his very exposeable offense, and has too big of an attitude problem to be worth pushing again.

Tommy Dreamer - retired basically the second the joined WWE. Was lucky to even get TV time.

Jerry Lynn - Won the L-HW Title in his first match... and got buried a month later and quickly taken off T.V.

Mike Awesome - Horrible mic skills, injuries cut him off at the knees to make him look even shorter compared to the truely tall wrestlers.

From the looks of things, almost everyone I listed got what they deserved, and the ones that didn't really didn't belong at the top of the card anyway.

Apart from throwing small guys around, he could only really brawl. If it was a regular match, unless he was in with an exellent worker to carry him, it invariably stunk. As good as Awesome looked when his limitations were being booked around, the WWF was unable or unwilling to do the same, so he was never going to look good there.

Bingo. Awesome was a "routine guy" (cheers Bret) – he worked the same damn match with Tanaka for years in Japan and ECW. As long as he had someone smaller willing to bump their ass of for him – Tanaka, Kid Kash, Spike – he looked great, but as soon as you put him in the ring with someone of comparable size and ability… train wreck. Couple that with his destroyed knees, the typical toning down of WWF main event style (what's the point of the guy being able to springboard off teh top rope to the floor if they won't let him?) and it's no surprise the guy went nowhere. I don't think the fact that he's Hulk's cousin or that Heyman hated his guts really did him too many favours either.

But talking of guys who did well in Japan but coulcn't really make it in the US, how about Dr Death? I know he was a pretty big star in All Japan, but he really could've been bigger domestically. I think if he didn't get taken out in the Brawl For All, he's the sort of hoss that Vince would've given a decent push to (and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been fed to Butterbean at Mania, either).

Wasn't the whole point of the Brawl For All to establish Dr. Death as a legitimate tough guy? And after he won he was going to be pushed against Austin. Why McMahon would attempt something so risky to get someone like Dr. Death over is beyond me.

I think Williams was a big name in the Mid South days, in the late 80s and through the early 90s. He had his moments in U.S. wrestling. Williams was pretty much past his prime when the Brawl for All event came around.

Bullshit. Rhyno was having very good matches including carring Jerhico to a damn fine match after Chris knocked himself silly, and a VERY underrated match against the Rock before he injured his neck. he came back from neck surgery and wasn't the same performer. Not saying that he should have been upper card, but I was arguing the "one move" thing.

RVD - Exposed as not being a Main Event wrestler with his very exposeable offense, and has too big of an attitude problem to be worth pushing again.

Thats so goddamned laughable I don't think I even have to respond...but I will. For those few months when RVD was the ME on RAW or Smackdown, the matches were great. I don't understand how a guy can have great match after great match and have people say that "he had a exposable offense". At the end of the day, he had great matches with Taker, Angle, Guerro, Benoit, (did he ever even wrestle HHH?)....basically every top card wrestler he had damn good matches with except Brock. So to review, He has damn good matches with every maineventer, is over with the crowd, and this proves he ISN"T ME material....riiiiiigghhhhtt.

Tazz - Started off alright, went dead thanks to a lot of new blood, and retired soon. He's carrying Cole on SD PBP though

He didn't go dead because of new blood. He went dead because this guy was the very definition of burial. He came in....the crowd was ready to blow for face Taz. They made him a jobber...the crowd was still ready to blow for face Taz. They turned him into a joke. The crowd was STILL ready to blow for face Taz. They put him in the ring with SUPER OVER AUSTIN. The crowd was STILL ready to blow for Taz more. At one point, Taz was more over than the entire roster outside of Austin, RVD and Rock. And this with no wins, no anything. Just plain presense. A retarded 3 year old could have written a program to get the guy to ME status, but not he WWE. They thought the best thing to do with Taz was have Austin squash him after beating him with a belt and take him off TV for a while.

Can't disagree with anything else there.

His most famous moment to me is coming in that cruiserweight battle royal in WCW and injured THE ENTIRE CRUISERWEIGHT ROSTER IN 5 MINUTES. I mean he just came in and legit injured like 5 guys....in a row.

Jason Jett was supernova-over in WCW's dying days. On a vaguely-related note, here's a bold statement: If WCW didn't go under, Sean O' Haire would've become the biggest star in the business.

I doubt it. O'Haire tanked in the WWE because he was, quite simply, pure shit in the ring. He was hardly amazing in WCW. People, myself included, went nuts because he had worlds of potential.

He just didn't come close to realizing it.

If he stayed in WCW, he would've been pushed far beyond what his drawing power would have ever warranted. Much like Scott Steiner was.

-=Mike

Are you talking Scott Steiner 2000/01 push..?

Isn't it a little unfair to make assumptions on his drawing power from those times..?

Forget for a minute the Brawl for All debacle ... why wasn't Dr Death a bigger star in the 80s, and why didn't VKM grab him during one of his roster raids? I mean, he grabbed such stellar wrestlers as Billy Jack Haynes and Hercules Hernandez; why not Dr Death, who had the strength/bad ass thing both those guys had along with legit wrestling skills?

I could have seen him as a Jim Duggan-level wrestler, if not a step higher to the IC level. And he could have been heel or face every bit as easily. Lastly, recreating the Williams & Dibiase tag team from the mid south days would have been awesome.

Well, he did spend all that time in All Japan dropping 260 pound guys on their heads – it was WCW's fault for putting him in there with guys half his size and weight and expecting them not to get killed.

Agreed on all but the DiBiase thing – well, if they could have had WILLIAMS as DiBiase's bodyguard, that would have been awesome. But if the team would have meant the end of the Million Dollar Man gimmick, I'd have to say no.

Williams just seemed like the perfect '80s Vince guy – very odd indeed. Oh and yes, the Brawl For All was set up SPECIFICALLY for Doc to get him over as a monster. Why book a shoot to get someone over? Well, Williams is a legit badass, but hey, I can't argue the stupidity there. Although, for what it's worth, I enjoyed Brawl For All in a carcrash kinda way.

DVD, maybe I was on too much of a roll when I through the Williams & Dibiase tag team reunion in there. (alhtough, those two would have been >> Money Inc, IMHO. So they could have kept them seperate for the first few years and then had them team up instead of Dibiase & IRS.)

How about they teamed Doc with Duggan?

Steve Williams had a great deal with All Japan; really good money, no political bullshit to deal with, and pretty much a guarantee of a high level spot for as long as he wanted. He'd have been nuts to have signed anything lengthy with the WWF or WCW.

It never fails to amaze me how people think RVD being a below-average worker is reason enough to not make him a main eventer. I sometimes wonder if his critics, or the company, even listen to the crowd and heard the reaction they gave him.

I think RVD is an incredibly limited performer too, but when someone is getting that kind of monster reaction, you push them to the moon. Arguing his ability to work and his ability to headline are two separate arguments.
