So? Some people like it. What's it matter? Are you greatly offended by the tastes of others enough to start a thread that says "Hey, fella's dead," and then for the next three pages quote and dissect every response just to say "He was a shitty writer"? Take up knitting or something. Unless you folks want to start suggesting some literary criticisms and such, in which case take it to the library folder, other than that, congratulations, we all know your opinon now.

And your incessant griping is preferrable to you?

This is my third post in this thread, and last.

Here, I'll pull the string on Mike's back for everyone else's benefit.

He was a mediocre hack without having much clever to state, nor able to actually make a cogent point. His work has been a running joke for going on 30 years straight. Even if you think "Fear and Loathing" was excellent (which would simply demonstrate how little one has read), you would have difficulty naming a book in the last 30 years he wrote that approaches that.

Mike, you first just said he was a bad writer, and I could even agree with you on that because I thought that his books resembled a mountain of boredom with some serious gems on top (i.e. the piece I mentioned in my last post.) But I think to slam the works not for the quality of their writing, but for the quality of their content, is either wrong or just like you, I don't know.

Thompson's books were screeds for those who were could sense the hypocracy in America's culture. They criticised the people who drone on about the importance of freedom while always living within the lines and never living a moment of freedom for themselves.

The point of the stories is to take life to it's extremes, further than you or I would care to go, and see what you can get away with. You could have a wild time, you could end up in jail, you could even die. It's the mission statement of a previous era personified.

But yes, Mike, I understand why you think it's so horrible.I've heard you rant about hippies (and I'm not their biggest fan either, but...) I've heard you rant about baby boomers and how idiotic our parents are for deciding to not conform with the status quo of the time. I've heard you rant about the great crime that so many people think the sixties was a better time for America than the fifties.

We get it, Mike.

We recognize that your way of being different is to rage FOR the machine, not against it.

You've said your peace already.

Now go.

Thanks for reminding me why I never took this guy seriously...

Your objectivity is stunning per usual.

I was never a HST fan -- so what? It's not like I said "I'm glad the bastard's dead."

Oh, and regarding the Fifth Element -- I liked the movie, got the DVD, but will not get the recently printed "Ultra/Special/Whatever Edition..."

What's so special about it?

3 extra seconds of Milla's boobs?

I don't think RT's system is all that bad. Who needs two Metacritics? Likewise, who needs two RTs? It merely helps amplify the general consensus and give you a look at the big picture. I use both myself.

...funny thing--RT is similar to an Electoral College for movie ratings.

Oh, I can continue all I want. Just like you can sit on the sidelines and pout.

In fact, you might wish to return to doing just that. It's your best suit. Just stop committing your Holocause against the concept of thought.

What the fuck are you even talking about? I'm not deriding your opinion or telling you to shut up or stop posting or saying you have to like HST, I said if you were going to make a thread about someone and then post 'he's shit' over and over, you should probably say why (which you sort of did after my post).

That's not being against thought, that's being FOR thought. 20 posts of 'you're wrong' or accusing me of 'pouting' (huh?) don't really add to discourse. They're just meaningless. You're very capable of making effective arguments, why not spend more time doing so than quoting sentence by sentence every post and saying 'nuh-uh'?

Holocause against the concept of thought? I'm still failing to grasp how that applies to my post in any conceivable way. I don't even think HST is that great. He's entertaining enough, and sometimes interesting. Anyone who is radically political can give an interesting read if they're an OK writer (and no, I haven't read anything from him in the past 20 years) but he does get repetetive.

But I guess disagreeing with you in any way is considered pouting. And trying to engender discussiong is anti-thought.

Fair enough. I take it back. Only cuz I'm a useless fucktard according to the "expert". Singular. As in THE only one. :P
