The NWA in WWF, 1997...

Recommended Posts

I did mark out for the "New Midnight Express" though. I thought Bart Gunn and Bob Holly actually made a really good team, and it made sense to stick them together since they weren't doing anything solo (ahem...maybe WWE should do stuff like that again???). They had a very good match against the NAO at a PPV, too.

that match was at King of the ring 98 and yea it was pretty good (with a goofy finish with chyna lowblowing cornette) They did make a good team and at least when they did face the outlaws JR made mention of the brothers gunn fighting each other

I also laughed at Cornette and Tim White engaging in a round of fisticuffs.

They did that at Unforgiven 98 as well in the NWA World Tag Team Title match between the new MX and the RnRs.

regarding the whole racism thing ... I have no issues with Corny using the Gangstas as heels, because I really do think that there are enough racists/bigots in that area that they'd have disliked even a babyface tag team if they were black.

BUT

If he really dropped n****r just because he was pissed at the guy for ruining a match, it's pretty fucked up. Call the guy countless other names before dropping that one. Motherfucker, douchebag, ANYTHING that's not a racist term.

It probably just slipped out, and he's just trying to think of something to defend it. That doesn't make it right, but some people are well known for saying something without thinking...

(I once called my 8th grade English teacher "dad"... thank God no one heard me)

If it "slips" out, you were thinking about it already. He's a white guy from down south who got in an argument in PUBLIC with a black person, and called him a nigger. Despite all of the other stuff that he said about how white people feel about blacks, I don't see how him being racist would be a stretch of the imagination.

If someone laughs at an offensive joke, it doesn't automatically mean they have the same offensive views that the joke promotes. If Cornette was a racist, why would he even have a black heel tag team ? Why would he have a black heel tag team and give them a main event push ? Why would he book an angle to get laid out by said black tag team ?

He called a black person a nigger to offend him. He said it in front of ALOT of people so I can only imagine what he says behind closed doors. What other way could he have intended to use the word nigger than in a way to degrade and anger him? Using black people as bad guys in front of a bunch of people who you don't think like black people isn't done out of love for black people. It's done to make money.

Also he talks about how white people don't like turning on the tv and seeing black people glorifying violence. How the fuck is black people glorifying violence any different than anybody else doing it? Does he have anything against muscular Austrian men glorifying it? What about Asians? Or how about the fact that wrestling is a bunch of fucking violence? He also said that all white people know about gangs is what they see on tv. So this makes him decide to form a black tag team called the Gangstas? That's the same mentality as the evil foreigner angles that they used to run all the time. He also said something about there being good blacks and bad blacks. How about the fact that there's good PEOPLE and bad PEOPLE. Then he talks about not hiring a couple of guys because they're fat and lazy. Lord knows there's no fat lazy white people in wrestling.
