cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Yet again I was so wrapped up in the moment I posted under my bro's spidyfan ID on here, haha. Anyway I don't wanna worry about Illinois quite yet. In a strange way I was relieved they came back tonight mainly because 1. I've wanted U of L to play Illinois all year since I think it'll be great and 2. Arizona truthfully worried me more. There is no way that Zona/IL game was better than WVU/U of L, not in a million years. Let's face it: Zona choked like a bitch. When you are up 10-15 with 3 mins left and you find a way to lose, you CHOKED. I said it about Duke/UNC II, and it is true here as well. My God, just inbound the ball, get fouled, make some FTs, and you have it. WVU didn't really choke the game away today, U of L methodically came back and finally seized the day. I mean WVU had a RECORD day, they were incredible. Anyway, I bet I've aged 10 years today. When we were down 15-20 to WVU I was in utter despair, I swear I was having some total emotional breakdown where I was utterly in tears (I know, I'm lame). Hell, I was rambling about being in 1st grade back in 1986 when U of L won the title, and dancing around the livingroom with my mom when we beat Duke, I was that happy. Everyone around here assumed we'd beat down WVU, which of course scared me to death. Anyway, how we managed to win in OT is beyond me...we had a limping Dean, Garcia fouled out, Ellis bricking FTs, Palacios bricking em too....oddly enough it was little heroics that saved the day, stuff like LORENZO WADE calmly going to the line and nailing 2 (he's so much of an airhead the moment probably didn't scare him). My brother and I were both standing the whole OT. We basically ran mom out of the house because we would do WORSE when she was in the room, haha. Finally when it was over I hugged my bro big time, yelled out the door like a lunatic (my mom was in the car a nervous wreck), and then ran back to my dad and hugged him big time as well (he was watching it in bed). This is possibly the most markish post ever in Smark Marks history, but I don't care. I'm happy as hell right now and trying to figure if I wanna splurge for some FF tix in St. Louis. I like the Cardinals a lot as every Memphis v. U of L game is usually a great one. With me, the Cards are friendly rivals unlike Cincy- where I hate everyone. I had Louisville v. Illinois in the final 4 so I'm glad I got that right. Dean, Garcia and O'Bannon are just awesome. Any NBA prospects for those three?

I said it back during football season that I like U of L b/c I almost went to school there. No they aren't one of my favorite teams. But I will root for them b/c of the fact that I almost went to school there and I like them. And since they're the only remaining team in the tourney that I actually like then I am going to root for them. What do you want me to do? Sit there and not cheer for anyone in the tournament? I'm sure some of your favorite teams aren't in the tournament anymore. So are you just not rooting for anybody? That's weak. So when OU was eliminated I was just supposed to sit there and go "Well my teams gone! No reason to watch this tournament b/c I can't cheer for any other teams!!" cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Dama, welcome aboard but I'm not sure if you're a jinx or not...weren't you on the Eagles bandwagon? Hopefully you have better luck in choosing basketball teams. Bob, being a Memphis fan you know there is something....really eerie going on with U of L this year. I'm talking miracle from God type stuff, like Darius Washington missing the FTs or the comeback today. When I was 12 my little league team was kinda like that, winning games with wild, miraculous plays. You have to be really good to go far, but you also have to be lucky as hell sometimes. Seriously, this is so great. My freshman year at U of L we went 12-20 in hoops (though we did beat UK that year and UK won it all). We also went 1-10 in football. And now? 33-4 and in the Final 4, and went 11-1 in football. But for now U of L can rest, lord knows guys like Dean need it. Otis too. Bravo, guys.

therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 I'm still alive in my pool thanks to Illinois and Louisville both winning today, a UNC win tomorrow gets 3 of 4 Final Four teams in and gives me a good shot at winning. However, if UNC decides to choke tomorrow against Wisconsin, then I'm rooting for a Kentucky/Louisville championship just to see what kind of apocalyptic atmosphere would take place in the state of Kentucky because of it. Mole 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 And my pool is done with. All I have left is UNC thanks to Zona blowing it tonight. The first pool I ever entered (I did brackets in the past but never entered in a pool) in 9th grade was my best. I came in third, but I probably did better than that. A senior was running the pool and somehow he came in first place. I am pretty sure he fucked me over, but whatever. I got my 5 bucks back.

Because I know, the game where they got killed by Memphis (had to mention that- Louisville's last loss), their worst loss before that was Denny's last year. I've always been a big Pitino fan so I'm really happy seeing Louisville totally turn their programme around. Watching and following C-USA all year, I knew these guys were definetley the real deal. It's not always pretty but they find a way to win. A lesser team would've said fuck it and folded at Fed Ex a few weeks ago. Not Louisville. I've gotten really into watching Taquan Dean and Garcia play together. Oh and I made $5 betting that Louisville would make it to the Sweet
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 And my pool is done with. All I have left is UNC thanks to Zona blowing it tonight. Ok once again. Has anyone figured out what the fuck they were doing at the end of that game? What I thought they were going for was echoed in the Associated Press recap: Williams hit two more 3-pointers in overtime, but Illinois' victory wasn't secured until Arizona's Hassan Adams, who'd scored five points to get the Wildcats within a point, missed a rushed shot just before the final buzzer. Adams couldn't get the ball inside to Channing Frye or drive, so he took the shot. But it wasn't close.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Ok I see that. But they went about it in a very bad way. He should've made an extra pass or something instead of standing there like a moron looking for Frye.
Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Wow, what a great day for hoops. Two OT games and two great comebacks. I also had Louisville and Ill in my brackets, so I was happy about that. I think that West Virginia and Zona went on their runs too early with plenty of time. A great team can do this and they normally cruise, however this is no guarantee. West Virginia had a great run and they played in one of the greatest NCAA games I have ever watched since Duke beat Kentucky. I thought they might just pull out the win, but when Louisville began picking away at the lead, I knew that the game was not over. Also, Louisville might have the most complete team. Even when Garcia fouled out, Louisville's players stepped up and continued their comback. As for Zona, Illinois is the real deal. They never panicked and refused to lose and Zona just could not finish. The OT was crazy as it looked like Ill would pull away and Zona clawed back into the game. My only complaint was the poor clock management on the last play. Too much holding the ball and not taking a good shot because the Zona player became rushed to fire a shot off. Also, wouldn't you rather have Salim take the last shot? I don't know what happened there, but it still was great game and comeback. So one side of the Finals is set and Ill vs Lou will be fun to watch. As for the other side, I hope that the string of good games continue. What is great that any one of the Final Four teams will have a chance and that makes this tourney my favorite.
Alro 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Bob, Denny Crum's last year was 2000-2001 season. Then Little Ricky came back to the Bluegrass State to a less-than-warm reception, at least outside of Jefferson County.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Nah, U of L vs. UK is a much bigger deal than IU/Purdue. That one is a nice rivalry game but neither team has done shit in so long that it's lost its luster. My frosh year at U of L was 1997-98. The last year of the Ron Cooper plague era where we went 1-10 in football before hiring John L. Smith and kinda turning it around (at least to the point of jobbing to the MAC in bowls, haha) before Petrino got us going for real. Then after that I got to see U of L go 12-20 in hoops and have one awful embarrassing loss after another. We did beat UK that year, one of the few highlights. Then my senior year at U of L we went 12-20 or so AGAIN, this was Denny's last year. Ironically enough Ellis Myles was in a sociology class with me in his freshman year. I remember him being in lousy shape too, cramping up at Cincy big time (though I think we won that game) and the prof. asked him the next day if he was okay, haha. We've been really good the past couple of years as well, but it's just that right around Feb. 1 a bunch of guys would get hurt and we'd go in the tank. This year was all about paying back all the CUSA heels that had driven us nuts: Cincy, Marquette, St. Louis, and of course Memphis. Onward now to St. Louisville! Mik 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Only about two hours to go until UNC/Wisconsin. Everyone here in Chapel Hill was nervous about Villanova before hand, but not too many people I've talked to or seen around town are too worried about Wisconsin. Good sign or bad sign? We'll see. Go Heels.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Also, wouldn't you rather have Salim take the last shot? I don't know what happened there, but it still was great game and comeback. Well Salim was having a horrible shooting day. I don't think they trusted him. Then again they wouldn't let him prove if he was clutch or not. I mean one bad day of shooting can be negated by a game winning jumper.
Gert T 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 I'll be rooting for Michigan State, but not Wisconsin and their Big Ten football style offense. But three Big Ten teams in the Final Four would be ironic in their "down year".

iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Oh and I made $5 betting that Louisville would make it to the Sweet 16 Solid. Who the hell would bet against that? Me. I put $20 on Georgia Tech to beat them, even as a 1 point favorite. And by the way, count me in as rooting for an all Big-Ten championship. That's exactly what I need to get second in my pool and win $150.
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 By the way, Wisconsin needs to slow things down a lot more. This kind of game only works when they slow things down enough to frustrate the other team. If they play a regular basketball game with Carolina, shooting in the first ten seconds every time down the floor, they're screwed.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 What looked like a rout in the making has turned into quite a game, but Wisconsin's starting to get outmanned in this second half, I think. They're still keeping it close, but getting very little penetration. Sean May picked a fine day to have one of his best games of the season. Wisconsin's Kammron Taylor has one of the most hardcore first names I've seen in a while.
