Well, I watched it the other night. Marked out dozens of times. Haven't seen Old School Taker, Hogan or Savage in years.

 

Screamed when I saw Dibiase. Screamed even louder when I saw I R S. One of the guys watching it with me said I screamed louder seeing I R S then I did when he and I were in a car and almost had a 120 kmh head on collision.

 

Here's the questions:

 

What was Taker's beef with Savage?

 

Did anyone notice that Savage jumped over the top rope to continue beating Taker, and crawled back in the ring a few seconds later? He made it to the final four!

Whether or not Savage is eliminated is debated by Heenan & Monsoon on commentary. Heenan actually says that the rules state that someone must eliminate you, and you can't eliminate yourself, so they let it go. Obviously, the rule was forgotten over the years (Drew Carey in 2001). Making this even funnier is the fact that Boss Man technically eliminated himself, also, since he jumped at the top rope, only to bounce over, without Flair touching him.

Drew Carey apperance in the Rumble was a joke so it doesn't count and he walked away Savage went back in.

 

 

Undertaker was a associate of Jake "The Snake" Roberts, who was fueding with Savage. So Taker by defualt is fueding with Savage.

Savage also pretty much no sold whatever Undertaker was doing to him during his "crazy rush" on Roberts outside the ring.

 

Let's see a few others...

 

1989: Andre eliminated himself (allowed)

1993: Undertaker eliminated by Non-Participant (Allowed)

1996: Vader eliminated EVERYONE (except Owen for some reason, who kept going through the ropes) (not allowed)

1997: Mil Masacaras eliminated himself (Allowed) Ditto Ahmed and Faarooq (eliminated by illegal non-entry)

 

I guess it all depends on the booking.

Also; in hindsight, they could have just had savage stay eliminated and blame the "intensity of hatred for jake" causing it and just had Piper fill that final 4 spot.

Savage jumped over the top rope to continue attack Jake Roberts who he was feuding with at the time. Taker climbed out of the ring to drag Savage back into the ring, I've always read that situation as Taker realising that Savage had just eliminated himself and was going to drag him back into the ring as a cover-up as Savage was scheduled for the final four of the match.

Did Faarooq eliminate himself in 1997 too? or did Amhed actually hit him?

Ahmed wasn't legal to begin with at that point (he eliminated himself 5 minutes into the match), so either way, it shouldn't have counted.

Savage jumped over the top rope to continue attack Jake Roberts who he was feuding with at the time. Taker climbed out of the ring to drag Savage back into the ring, I've always read that situation as Taker realising that Savage had just eliminated himself and was going to drag him back into the ring as a cover-up as Savage was scheduled for the final four of the match.

Taker was partners with Roberts at the time, so it would make sense that he would try and save Roberts.

I think in the crazyness of the moment and the massive crowd heat, Savage just messed up and jumped over the top without thinking. There is a slight pause on commentary when it happened and I think Monsoon or Heenan were told by someone in the back to cover for it with this "new rule".

 

It made sense for Savage to be in the last 4 considering he went on to face Flair for the title at WrestleMania.

 

But my question is, going into the Rumble was the plan for Flair/Savage or was the plan still for Flair/Hogan? When did they make the decision to switch?

When Hogan refused to lose to Flair at WM, I'd always heard. I'd guess that was before the Rumble though, hence the finish of the match.

I always heard McMahon changed it because it was Hogans last match (Taking time off for whatever reason you want to use) and didn't want him to lose. Hogan losing the main event to a heel in 1992 just wasn't happening, and everyone knows it, which is why Savage going over was a surprise (midcard Title Match = HEEL GOES OVER~!).

 

Would the card have been this if Hogan were to stick around though?

 

Hogan vs. Flair for the World Title, Savage vs. Roberts (if it hadn't been blown off at SNME), and Undertaker vs. Sid (if UT didn't turn face)?

I'm inclined to say yes, simply because I don't understand why they would blow off a feud as hot as Savage/Roberts on a late-night TV show.

Everyone Vader tossed was allowed back in. I think Owen keptgoing throught he ropes because he wasn't sure that he wouldn't be fucking up the match by going over the top and being eliminated too soon.

 

In 89, I think that Hogan eliminated Bossman after Hogan was eliminated by pulling him under the bottom rope and then hit him with a metal briefcase. Hogan was such a poor loser in Royal Rumbles.
