What have you given up for sports?

Recommended Posts

So I was supposed to have this date last night. I had like 3 during spring break. And it was starting to bankrupt me. And then I realized that basketball was on.

So she just made a comment like "I don't feel that good."

and I jumped all over it. I was like "What? You don't? Maybe you should stay home! Stay in bed!"

"Well I was going to go anyways....."

"No! I don't want you getting sicker on my account! We'll go out some other time! Ok? Bye!"

Then again I know this one guy. And Virginia Tech is his favorite team. They went on a huge run while his girlfriend was in the bathroom. And when she came out they started sucking again. So now he won't let her ever come out of the bathroom whenever Virginia Tech is down. She has to stay in there until they start winning.

Anyone else ever do anything weird out of super fandom or given up anything for sports?

What he said.

As for me, I can always tape whatever sporting events I want tow atch. I'll rarely ever not go out just because a game's on. I love sports, but life takes precedent and as long as the results aren't spoiled, the tape's almost as good as live.

Actually, now that I no longer live in Illinois, I don't get all the Cubs/White Sox/Bulls games on Fox Sports Chicago and Comcast SportsNet Chicago, so I don't have as much stuff to watch. I do watch the occasional Lakers or Clippers game, however, and I'm looking forward to Angels and Dodgers baseball.

With grammar like that, I'm sure you'll do great at that newspaper. It would be one thing in the thread, but in the topic? I can see the headline now:

Sooners Championship Will Have Wonned!

Yeah I screwed that up. I was typing it fast. Man you really are a nitpicker. Stick to the topic and don't start petty shit.

There is no way you had 3 dates with your temper. I think you just started this topic to brag how you had 3 dates and almost a 4th.

Oops sorry, I'll get back on topic.

If the BoSox are playing the Yankees or it is an important game, I won't go anywhere. Granted if they are playing the BlueJays in the middle of July, I can miss the game.

And if they are in the playoffs, I'd choose BoSox over sex.

The Jimmy Falon movie is what gave me the idea for this thread. And you just reminded me of him from that movie. Haha.

I've done other things to watch sports. Like call into work. I'm sure everyones done that one though.

I don't want Drew Barrymore.

But yes, I'd take a playoff BoSox game over sex. Especially the Yankees. Now that I think about it, I'd actually take a regular season Yankee game over sex.

God, I need help.

Who wouldn't?

Unless.....it is with a girlfriend/wife? Or someone completely different?

I'd probably take the baseball(well, Habs playoffs in my case) in any event. Still, it opens an interesting can of worms.

To answer the topic question, I go into hibernation during Masters week. No one gets anywhere near me on Masters sunday. Girlfriends, parents, nothing gets near me. In 2002, at 1:23, I made a call to a now, suffice to say, ex girlfriend. I got her machine:

"Amanda, It's me. It's about twenty after 1. Masters are on in ten minutes. Are you there? No? Well, ok. We could have talked. Fuck off until about 8 o clock, ok sweety? Love you."

In hindsight, I probably could have been more tactful. She was a bitch anyway, though. Two birds with one stone, I'd say.

Who says you have to choose? I get to watch the Phillies, Meg gets laid, it's all good. And heck, thanks to the miracles of the doggie style position, we can enjoy the game together.

Baseball during sex, that is a keeper.

I broke a blind date once last year in a baseball related reason.

Me & my roommate went down to a Cards-Reds game at GAB last July. His woman tried to hook me up with this woman from her work. We met at a bar across from the stadium and talked for about 35 minutes. Then she finally noticed my Cardinals hat and said "wait you're not really gonna root for them?" It went cold after that.

My question is this, would you really not date someone based on their teams? Hell, my current interest is a Browns fan and a Red Sox fan, (both of which are lowon my list) but would any of you be that picky in choosing a significant other?

I don't think I've ever had to choose sports over something else. If there's a game I really want to watch I usually make it known ahead of time and it doesn't cause a conflict.

Nah. I've been on a date with an OSU fan and Texas fan before.

Course it's easier to date them when your team dominates them every year.

But I probably wouldn't be able to go out with say a USC or LSU fan.

This is very, very true. I experienced this during the NFL playoffs this year, and it's definitely the best half hour I've ever had.

LOL. In one of my Yahoo fantasy leagues, I missed the first 1/3 or so of the live draft and Bobby Abreu was my first round pick. I hope he's as good as you say he is, Al. I root for the Phillies to win their division every year, but I rarely get to see any of their games, so I wasn't aware he was that highly touted.

I've turned down sex to watch playoff hockey, but it was with a girlfriend that I was living with at the time. It just meant that we had sex the next morning before work instead of at night before going to sleep.

Other than that, the worst that I've done is limit the options on where I'd take a date to places with TVs so I could keep my eye on a game that I wanted to see.
