bob_barron Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 Simmons went in wanting to hate the movie. I don't take much stock in his opinion. Ebert gave it ***1/2 and EW gave it A. It was really good->great movie but the last 10 minutes kinda kill it
cabbageboy Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 Well the last 10 mins also coincide with the Yankees jobbing. I do admit that Drew's actions near the end were really farfetched, it was like the Fenway version of Anger Management on the believability scale. I did like the movie though.
bob_barron Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 I think had they done the movie knowing the Sox were going to have the miracle comeback, it would've been much better. There's so much stuff they could've focused on and touched on about what made that comeback so magical and how it brought Jimmy and Drew together, but I understand they were kind of screwed. The Sox losing would've made a lot more sense though, and you could tell that's the direction they were going in
Slayer Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 Simmons went in wanting to hate the movie. I don't take much stock in his opinion. Ebert gave it ***1/2 and EW gave it A. It was really good->great movie but the last 10 minutes kinda kill it Question is: Was it really a sports film, or a chick flick wrapped up in a sports package? I'll stand by the opinion that Fallon isn't funny, and that there's something fundamentally wrong with having a guy from Brooklyn play a Sox Fan
bob_barron Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 It was a chick flick wrapped up in a sports package. Fallon isn't great at playing the obsessive Sox fan, but his scenes with Drew are great. He basically just plays himself the whole movie
SuperJerk Posted April 22, 2005 Report Posted April 22, 2005 I'll stand by the opinion that Fallon isn't funny Maybe it'd been funny if they'd cast Horatio Sans as his co-star so they could stand around and break character for 90 minutes.
bob_barron Posted April 22, 2005 Report Posted April 22, 2005 I like you keep knocking Fever Pitch even though you didnt see it. And Jimmy and Horatio only really cracked up a few times in the 02-03 season. It wasn't like it was a chronic problem
slimm44 Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 I saw the movie yesterday. I'm not a huge baseball fan but I tune in in October through the series, because nothing else is really on. Fallon was funny and the movie was generally funny. Because of the end to the series, and predictability of all romance movies, the last half of the movie was slow. Probably better than Guess Who...but I'll never know.
SuperJerk Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 8 months later... My wife is upstairs watching this movie right now. "You've been watching this for an hour." "So?" "I haven't heard you laugh yet." "I didn't know it was supposed to be funny." Actual conversation.
2GOLD Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 8 months later... My wife is upstairs watching this movie right now. "You've been watching this for an hour." "So?" "I haven't heard you laugh yet." "I didn't know it was supposed to be funny." Actual conversation. Same thing happened with me and my girl. We were watching it and about 30 minutes in she turned and asked me, "is this a comedy?" To which I looked at her and said, "It's supposed to be but the cast told me it wouldn't be." We didn't laugh once, there was nothing there. Thankfully it was a rental and we ignored her suggestion to buy the damn thing.
bob_barron Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I guess I'm the only one who really enjoyed it.
SuperJerk Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I'm not so much knocking the movie as I am forwarding my theory that Jimmy Fallon isn't funny.
bob_barron Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I'd respond, but I think I've gone back and forth on Jimmy isn't funny/yes he is, way too many times. At least I admit that Taxi was awful
SuperJerk Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 Do you think he's funny enough to carry a movie?
Mole Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I don't think Fallon is funny, but he had me laughing in this movie. I think it's the fact I'm a BoSox fan.
pochorenella Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 I guess I'm the only one who really enjoyed it. I liked it too, very much. I watched it back then with a girl I was interested in, and she kept saying how Fallon's character reminded her of me, you know, having this "obsessions" with wrestling, KISS, and having collectibles all over my apartment. Sadly, my particular story didn't end up having the happy ending I was looking for.
LivingLegendGaryColeman Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 I don't think Fallon is funny, but he had me laughing in this movie. I think it's the fact I'm a BoSox fan. Same boat here. There were certain things on SNL I laughed at Jimmy Fallon, but Jimmy Fallon wasn't exactly one of my favorite SNL cast members. I saw this because I've been a life long Sox fan. I enjoyed it a lot, I think because I am a Sox fan and can sadly relate to some of the movie.
