Alex"Dirty" Sanchez, former Detroit Tigers centerfielder, now with the Devil Rays, is the first player to test positive for steroids under the new drug testing policy. This gives a new meaning to his nickname of Dirty among hardcore Tigers fans. Its pretty sad because earlier in the spring there was the feel good story of him reuniting with his family. First the guy gets released from the Tigers, now this.

I know, I was trying to figure out how in the hell this guy was on steroids. He isn't very big, I've seen him in person, and he hit two more homeruns than I did. He says that this is some type of mistake, and hell I might give him the benefit of the doubt seeing as hes shown all the power of a high school JV team second baseman in his time with the Tigers

Since the tests measure amounts of hormones in the bloodstream, there is an issue of false positives. You have to wonder how a player can take steroids and have such little power. Of course, he could've started this spring in an attempt to fix that.

Steroids have different effects for different people, and they don't naturally guarantee a better hitter.

Alex Sanchez played 101 games for the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who finished 43-119. If we assume Sanchez was on the 'roids, we must asterik his records (I don't support this, but play along). The funny thing is MLB hasn't said it was steroids. Various "sources" have claimed it was steroids.

Derrick Turnbow tested positive for steroids under the Olympic program two years ago. I think alot of people have misconceptions about what players are likely to use steroids. You might be more likely to see steroid use among players who are straddling the line between MLB and the minors.

Baseball can't say it was steroids, but that's the only banned substanced, by the league.

 

I think Sanchez is dumb enough to have used steroids. Either didn't know they where steroids, or took them and thought by doing so, would become a great player, without having work at it.
