Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 26, 2005 When did "struggling" officially get replaced by "scuffling"? I've heard this at least three times this season; i.e. an announcer will say "Chipper Jones has been scuffling so far, hitting only .179 with 2 RBI in 25 games." Was there a press release put out that I missed? This reminds me of a few years ago when all of a sudden "game-winning HR" turned into "walk-off HR."
the max 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2005 I've never heard that term.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 26, 2005 I know for sure I heard it during the Braves-Mets game on ESPN last night. I also heard it on a local Mariners broadcast, and I think the other time was on ESPN Radio.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2005 So then on PTI are they going to say "scuffle-ING"?

They were probably trying to get their latest catch phrase over.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 This reminds me of a few years ago when all of a sudden "game-winning HR" turned into "walk-off HR." Their two different things. So they're correct in changing the name.
Steve J. Rogers 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 This reminds me of a few years ago when all of a sudden "game-winning HR" turned into "walk-off HR." Their two different things. So they're correct in changing the name. And in case anyone wonders, a game winning HR could be hit on the very first pitch of the game if the winning pitcher hurls a shutout, while walk-offs are the last pitch of the game. Yes its the game winner, but its a more definitive description of a last-at-bat game winning HR Actually its that reason that Game Winning RBIs were actually taken off the "official" listing of stats, because that doesn't really tell just how clutch a guy is. Your RBI to drive in run 5 in the first inning of a 13-4 route is considered a "Game Winning RBI" when in fact no Game Winning RBI should even be counted for that kind of game since the game would never be in serious doubt! Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 27, 2005 Yeah, but "walk-off" just sounds so...corny.

razazteca 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2005 I always thought a "walk-off" HR was only done by a pitch-hitter. You know like a the guy came off the bench to win the game.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 2, 2005 Here are some examples of what I'm talking about, from recent articles on ESPN.com... Feb. 28, 2005 Estes' career year came with San Francisco in 1997, his first full season in the majors, where he made the NL All-Star team in compiling a 19-5 record and 3.18 ERA, striking out 181 in the process. But he couldn't get comfortable the next season, scuffling to a 7-12 mark with a 5.06 ERA. Feb. 21, 2005 "It was a nightmarish year," Jones said. "But I had to keep things in perspective. My body was not at full speed. Whenever you have little things that are hurting, you tend to make up for it in other areas. Then you develop bad habits. Before you know it, you're really scuffling." Feb. 3, 2005 His goodwill with fans began eroding in 2003, when he was caught using a corked bat, and the disenchantment grew last season. His numbers were dropping, and an April 2003 beaning and series of other injuries had taken a toll on his swing. He was scuffling so badly in September that Baker dropped him to sixth in the batting order. Feb. 26, 2005 Jimenez became the career saves leader for the Rockies, compiling 102 in four years with Colorado, including nailing down 41 of 47 chances in 2002 with a 3.56 ERA. But in 2003, Jimenez scuffled to open the season, and was eventually moved back into a starting role, finishing with a messy 5.81 ERA.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2005 What a strange decision to make, changing "struggle" to "scuffle." I don't get it.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2005 Do they issue press releases for this shit? At any rate, I now deem that here at forums.thesmartmarks.com, we change all instances of "hustle" to "bustle." Pete Rose is Charlie Bustle. Derek Jeter shows good bustle on the baseline. I read Bustler magazine. There's too much bustle and bustle around here.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2005 Oh by the way, on this topic, what's with the WB calling new episodes "fresh" episodes? I understand they're trying to be hip and cool and all that jazz, but given how the majority of WB programming is tired rehashed uninventive crap, they're better off just calling it a "new" episode than the flagrant false advertising of "fresh." "Scuffling."
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 4, 2005 Yeah, pretty soon TV networks are gonna start calling reruns "recycled" episodes or "classics" or "throwback" episodes, something stupid like that.
