WWE Cruiserweight Division

Recommended Posts

Ok, the WWE seems to be doing their annual "let's push the cruiserweights" dealy that -at best- lasts a month. Rather than lament about the lost potential, or get our hopes up for something good, let's just see what the board can come up with in advance before any more bad can happen.

Possible feuds, stables, concepts... everything is open for discussion. It's not the best cruiserweight roster ever, but it's not exactly dry either. They have enough guys to make a cruiserweight tag division, for example. Have at it.

Roster:

Paul London ©

Chavo Guerrero

Rey Mysterio

Billy Kidman

Spike Dudley

Akio

Nunzio

Funaki

Scotty 2 Hotty

Shannon Moore

Signed:

Juvi

Nicho

Super Crazy

Essa Rios

Lucha/WCW style 6 mans where leaving the ring is like a tag? That would be hot.

I think if they brought in all the mexican guys in masks and have them side with Rey against Eddie would be great - since the mask has been a focus of the feud. In time, when their masks are removed, then join with Eddie. The symbolism being clear.

I think a "King of Cruisers" round-robin would be fun. It wouldn't be affiliated with the Cruiserweight title, and would be under modified rules. The rules would be something like no count-outs, no rope breaks, and maybe three 5 minute rounds (or 5 three minute rounds). This would be an incentive for cruiserweights to push the limits. After the 5 minutes are up, it is left to a select group of judges who score on impressive moves, damage, near falls, etc. Of course, it would be rare for a match to go to a decision. Once the King of Cruisers is decided, then he would defend his title under the modified rules.

Eventually -and ultimately- there would be a confrontation between the Cruiserweight Champion and the King of Cruisers, and who is the true "best" cruiserweight in the world. In this scenario, the Cruiserweight champ would refuse to fight the King of Cruisers and in doing that he'll get called a coward. A match will take place, one man will win both titles and defend them both on different occasions. A feud can be based on a cruiser winning the KOC title, then down-the-line (after the KOC title is lost) challenge for the Cruiserweight title and be the odds-on-favourite. This dual title situation can create lots of matches and would be a change of pace in the WWE.

Paul London - I'd have Paul London be the number one babyface for the Cruiserweight division for a while. After the draft, I'd have him lose the belt to Khosrow Daivari and eventually win it back at WrestleMania.

Khosrow Daivari - Daivari is drafted to Smackdown and becomes the number one heel in the Cruiserweight division. He and Paul London would trade the title a few times, with the final change and the end of the feud occuring at WrestleMania.

Chavo Guerrero - Chavo would continue his feud with London until the draft occurs. Afterwards I'd fully involve him in the Eddie/Rey program. Afterwards he could work with Essa Rios.

Rey Mysterio - Rey will keep feuding with Eddie for a while, trading wins and such. I also like the idea of involving the other Mexican wrestlers in the feud.

Billy Kidman - Kidman is a tricky case. I suppose that I'd revert him back to the character he was during his feud with Hogan in WCW (cocky, hates veteren wrestlers, ect). Since Torrie Wilson has nothing to do I'd probably turn her heel and put her with Kidman. I'd like to see him feud with Shannon Moore for quite a while.

Spike Dudley - Spike is effective in his current role. No changes needed. I might have him feud with Nunzio. And maybe Funaki after that.

Akio - No real changes needed at the moment.

Nunzio - Nunzio would be booked as the little guy who can tie you into knots. I'd probably put him with Spike.

Funaki - See above.

Scotty 2 Hotty - Scotty would team with the debuting Matt Capotelli, to help him prepare for the big leagues.

Shannon Moore - See above.

Juvi - Juvi would be a part of Rey's group in the fight against Eddie.

Nicho - One of Eddie's guys.

Super Crazy - The last of Rey's group.

Essa Rios - See above.

Matt Capotelli - See above.

Johnny Jeter - Jeter would be the next babyface that I would be building up for that division. To do that, he has to feud and win with several other cruisers first. Billy Kidman, Khosrow Daivari, and finally Chavo Guerrero would be some of the feuds he'd have.

Bring back King of the Ring tournment with the winner getting a shot at the cruiserweight champion, London in a 2-out-3 pinfall or Iron Man match at Survivor Series.

What you gonna do when Latino World Order runs wild on you Esse?

I'm still advocating for a twelve-man, two six-person brackets round robin tournament with the finals. Showcase a match or two a week, with four on house show cards. Similar to what they run in Japan. It should keep guys busy for a good two months, develops some characters, everyone should get TV match time that means something, and helps sell house show tickets (at the most optimistic level). Two points for win, one for draw. You could run it for the number one contender, and still run something on the side. Plus, opening round trios matches. 10 man tag the night of the final of a mini tournament. You can tag those not in tourney matches during house shows, giving everyone a chance to work with everyone else, meaning everyone gets used to each other and helps them work towards their big TV showcases. Like I said, you should be able to get two months of booking with this.

I can see Eddie bringing in Juvi and Psicosis to help him out against Rey, with the whole 'faces from the past' reasoning they use. Hell, reform the LWO, add in Chavo, Crazy and Rios to make up the numbers.

Trouble is, that leaves Rey with London, Nunzio, Funaki, Scotty and Shannon. And let's face it, the latter four are pretty much done in terms of credibility.

I think that might work out quite well - for 2-3 weeks, Eddie's group destroys Rey and any allies he finds. But after Rey defeats Psychosis and Juvi in singles matches, they come to respect Rey again and eventually side with him. Cue a couple of months of various singles and multi man matches.

All I really want is a Rey-London 10-15 min match. That's about the closest WWE could get to a "dream match" for me right now.

Cruiserweight dream matches don't happen in WWE......remember Rey vs Ultimo Dragon was suppose to be a WM match. I can see Rey's group consist of London, Kidman, Nunzio. If these signings don't lead to a 25 minute 2-out-3 pinfalls or a traditional Survivor Series tag match then I don't see a point in the signings.

So a cruiser weight grand prix basically?

That's what I pimped.

Anyways, is having all the cruiserweights on one show the best of ideas? Yeah, you get a lot of match possibilities but does it also say something about their insignificance that Bischoff isn't trying to pick them up in the draft or starting a division of his own. With all the newcomers, Bischoff could steal the champ and build a division off "free agents". And making a high pick would build these guys up as something important.

Ive always like the idea of gang warfare strength in numbers, like team latin (rey, chavo, juvi, nicho and super crazy) vs noble, london, kidman, nunzio and spike.

You could get Tajiri and Daviri over and have them team up with akio, funaki and a returning Ultimo. Like team rest of world.

I talked about this idea lil bit before, but I shall elaborate on it now...

Since Smackdown is pre-taped, they can have some fun with the editing and post-production process. Since the Cruiserweights are "different", then why shouldn't their matches be? Have Akio come down with Bruce Lee-style outfits and sound effects, along with camera shots. Make his matches look like Bruce Lee movies. These would have to be jobber matches, but who cares, you get to see Akio do all these crazy moves. Have Funaki's matches look like Japanese Horror Movies. Nunzios matches look either like The Sopranos or The Godfather. The Mexican Wrestlers can stable-up and wrestle like a crazy El Santo movie.
