Ever get stuck bad in a video game when

Recommended Posts

And the worst of all: X-Men for the Genesis, an otherwise decent and quite difficult action game. I got to the end of the 5th (out of 6) level several times. At the end there's a computer in a room with no exits, and nothing left to do. You jump and hit the computer and it says something like: "you destroyed the computer! Reset the computer before it self-destructs!" and a 2 minute or so counter starts counting down. You jump around, there's no exits, there's nothing to hit.

You have to PRESS THE FUCKING RESET BUTTON ON THE GENESIS CONSOLE to get to the last stage. How EVIL is that? Seriously what kind of designer would think that up? Especially since every other reset button on a console I've seen (besides maybe the PS2, I dunno) is a hard reset. It's making me pissed thinking about it.

I remember a friend brought his Genesis to college and showed that to me. He got to the point and told me to figure it out. I'm running the X-Men all over the place trying to figure it out and with about 20 seconds left after laughing uproariously the entire time my friend told me to hit the reset button. I thought he was nuts, but I did it. I couldn't believe it. I wondered how game designers could be that cruel.

That stupid mission early in GTA:SA where you are in a lowrider competition. I've tried a bunch of times, but to no avail, so now the game sits collecting dust on my counter.

HA! to me that mission was quite easy. My damn brother got frustrated at it but I didn't, you just go with the music.

Koopa Park tourney in Mario Golf for N64.

Dammit all to hell, even today, I'm struglling with it.

And it's not quite on the same scale, but I could never beat my friend Matt at NES Open for old school NES. I once had him two down with three to play. He forced a playoff because I played it overly safe, just as I said I would. Proceeded to lose the playoff on the third hole when he made a ridiculous putt, and I missed a stupidly short one, because, as I called, I played it too safe. That was March 2003.

Had him on the ropes again in May 2004. I'm charging hard down the back nine, even stuffing one for ace at 15. We're at a party, where everyone is singing along to the Darkness' "I believe In A Thing Called Love".

I plead with them to shut up while I line up a crucial putt on 17.

They don't.

I three putt and lose by two.

Didn't listen to the Darkness for close to 6 months after that.

Wow, that X-Men thing sounds hilarious!

Anyway, since Zelda 64's been coming up a lot, I remember that for some reason I couldn't find the entrance to the Fire Temple, and I actually beat the entire Water Temple before I even got to it. When I finally got there, I was really surprised how easy it was.

My worst experience with a game, however, has to be with Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for N64. The first time I played the Sewers level, I made it all the way to the end before losing to the Giant Dianoga, (the boss). After that, I must have spent about 20 hours on the level, and I never made it back. I would never even run out of lives. I'd either get stuck trying to find the hole in the wall you jetpack up to, or trying to find my way through the underwater tunnel that you get to later on.

In both cases, you can see absolutely nothing but one color, even though the strategy guides make it seem like an obvious tunnel. I think part of the reason I had so much trouble may have been the shitty color on my old television. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got a new one. I'm starting to think there actually were visible tunnels there, and I just couldn't see them because my TV sucked so much.

no, bro, that sewer level is one of the most poorly constructed levels in the history of video game designing...Shadows had to be one the most frustrating games ever, simply because of the HORRIBLE controls...
