PWG Presents "Zombies Shouldn't Run" On Saturday, August 6!

By Silverback, PWG Staff Writer

Buenaventura, CA - Since we here at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (http://www.prowrestlingguerrilla.com) find ourselves in the public eye more often than not, we find it very important not to give our opinion on any causes or issues that may alienate our fans. However, there is one political issue that PWG feels very strongly about, and that is Zombie Awareness, and we can no longer stand by as public perception of zombies is distorted. Recently, filmmakers have found it tougher to draw movie goers into theaters, whether it's due to the decreasing quality of films, or high prices at the ticket window, no one can say for certain. With the resurgence of the zombie movie genre, and increasing pressure on box office performance, filmmakers are now resorting to "gimmicks" to bring in the money. The most popular of these "gimmicks" is the dressing up of zombies, thereby defeating the purpose of the entire genre.

All metaphors aside, zombies, by nature, are frightening because they are slow moving, single minded killing machines. You may be able to outrun them temporarily, but eventually, they'll catch up with you, and you'll be forced to make a stand. You can stab, shoot, maim, or crush them, yet all it takes is one bite from a zombie, and you're one of them. What could be more scary than that? Today's filmmakers have decided that's not scary enough, and have more or less changed the zombies of today's films into the raptors from Jurassic Park. These are not your grandfather's zombies, and frankly, PWG thinks the world is worse because of it. That is why on Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the Hollywood-Los Feliz JCC, PWG is holding our own event to raise Zombie Awareness, "Zombies Shouldn't Run" (it is also rumored there will be a wrestling show.)

Earlier this month, after his savage battle with Super Dragon to earn the number one contender spot, "Mr. Wrestling" Kevin Steen is poised to take the PWG Championship from around the waist of AJ Styles. However, since Styles defeated Super Dragon to win the PWG Championship in April, he has faced some of the stiffest competition the world of professional wrestling has to offer, and each time he has prevailed. Despite AJ Styles' success, this time will be different, says Kevin Steen. Infused with a new found determination after defeating Super Dragon three times in a row since forming the new SBS, Steen is now ready to take the final step in proving he is better in every way than Dragon. Though it remains to be seen if Steen can even take the title from AJ Styles, let alone hold on to it longer than Dragon did.

Also stemming from events taking place at PWG's 2nd Anniversary, Arrogance (Chris Bosh & Scott Lost) had their 9 month reign as PWG Tag Team Champions ended by the Aerial Xpress (Quicksilver & Scorpio Sky.) While they gained a small measure of revenge by brutally attacking and unmasking Scorpio Sky, they were still no longer champions. Though the AXP was scheduled to defend the titles the very next night, Scorpio Sky had virtually disappeared after his team's victory, and to this day has not been able to be contacted by PWG or even his tag partner, Quicksilver. Due to this, PWG Commissioner SoCal Val was forced to strip the AXP of the Tag Team Titles, setting up a match for the titles at "Zombies Shouldn't Run!"

Due to the rematch clause in the contract, Arrogance was automatically granted a shot at the now vacant belts. Later that night, their opponents were determined in a Four Team Elimination Match, where 2 Skinny Black Guys (El Generico & Human Tornado) beat out the other competitors for a shot at the titles. While it's arguable which team had the tougher route to this title match, it can't be argued that both teams deserve it, and that the fans are the real winners in this match. Them, and the team that comes away from the match as the winners, oddly enough.

"Zombies Shouldn't Run" will also feature:

- A rematch from All Star Weekend, with "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels putting his X-Division Title on the line once again against Chris Hero. Hero has stated that he was unprepared going into his first ever singles encounter with "The Fallen Angel," and since that loss, he has been preparing for an eventual rematch. With the X-Division Title on the line, the stakes are already high, but with both men's pride on the line, a victory here would be invaluable.

- Much talked about European sensation "Double C" Claudio Castagnoli will be making his PWG debut. Double C has been making a name for himself throughout Europe (well, from his homeland of Switzerland to neighboring Germany, the rest of the continent is more or less uninhabited,) and the Eastern US, but this will be his first trip out west, and where better to go than PWG? And who better to face than "The Technical Wizard" Joey Ryan? Ryan, who recently added a bathrobe to his ring attire to convey the idea that he is a technical wrestling master, not apprentice, certainly will have his work cut out for him with the Switzerlanderian, snazzy wardrobe or not.

- While 2 Skinny Black Guys were the clear fan favorites in the Four Team Elimination Match, Los Luchas (Phoenix Star & Zokre) were close seconds in terms of fan support. This didn't matter to SBS (Disco Machine & Excalibur) who blindsided Zokre to score a cheap victory over Los Luchas and eliminate them from the match. At "Zombies Shouldn't Run," Los Luchas will have their chance for revenge, while SBS intend to prove that they can defeat anyone in a fair contest, though their record may prove otherwise!

- Davey Richards' seemingly never ending quest for respect continues. Immediately after he suffered a loss to "Pinoy Boy" TJ Perkins at PWG's 2nd year anniversary, Richards went to SoCal Val claiming he was prepared for a match with Puma, and not TJ Perkins. Richards also insisted that PWG was intentionally throwing a a wrench in gears of the Davey Richards Superstar Machine to hold him back. SoCal Val wouldn't stand to hear any of it, promised Richards an easier match the next time around, against someone returning from an injury. What she didn't tell him was that his opponent would be Rocky Romero.

Plus Super Dragon, TJ Perkins, Quicksilver, Hook Bomberry, Top Gun Talwar, PWG Commissioner SoCal Val and more!

Also appearing "Zombies Shouldn't Run", as well as online at prowrestlingguerrilla.com, will be the two latest PWG DVD releases, "Jason Takes PWG" and "Guitarmageddon!" Both titles, along with all of the other in stock PWG DVD's can be picked up for only $15 each. Plus, fans can get their own officially licensed Super Dragon commercial quality masks, in order to relive their favorite Super Dragon moments. Please note, fans who purchase these masks are not entitled to attack Kevin Steen, no matter what has been said.

Finally, at "Zombies Shouldn't Run" we will also have information regarding our next event on Friday, August 19, plus keep an eye on prowrestlingguerrilla.com four info about our first annual, 2 day, 16-man tournament entitled "The Battle Of Los Angeles" taking place on September 3 & 4!

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's "Zombies Shouldn't Run" takes place at the Hollywood-Los Feliz JCC on Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the start time of 7:00PM. The Hollywood-Los Feliz JCC is located at 1110 Bates Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90029. Tickets are only $15, and will be available at the door. I've just recently gotten into PWG, and have been having a blast watching the shows. I ordered both nights of the ASW, and was really impressed, not just with the fly-in indy superstars, but with the locals and just general environment of the shows. So I ordered Jason takes PWG and Guitarmageddon, which arrived yesterday. Love the option to turn off the commentary, but have to say Ex and Disco handle the duties just fine, but it's nice to have the option to turn it off as well. Refreshing to see a more laid-back, and "there to watch wrestling and have a good time" crowd as well, there may be a few annoying comments here and there, but far less than I've found in ROH.

And although I'm a new fan, and may not pick up every nuance of the Excalibur/Kevin Steen/Disco Machine vs Super Dragon & Friends storyline, watching it unfold on the Jason show last night, it really has me intriguid. Simple, sensical stroytelling can works folks.

The Steen/Dragon angle plays out really well in the 2 Year shows. if you enjoy storyline so far, you'll enjoy it even more later on.

At Jason Takes PWG, Excalibur and Super Dragon came out and Excalibur said that it's time for the fake Super Dragon to come forward. Excalibur then attacked Dragon and he said that's they're going to have a Guerrilla Warfare match right then and there. During the match, Super Dragon #2 came out and attacked Super Dragon and SD2 unmasked and it was revealed to be Kevin Steen and helped Excalibur defeat Super Dragon. The next month during a tag team match with Excalibur and Kevin Steen against Disco Machine and Super Dragon, Disco turned on Dragon and joined Steen and Excalibur and became the new SBS.

Usually about now, I’d post some insanely long preview for the upcoming show… and also usually about now you'd :firing: and go read something else.

Errr anyway, I never quite finished a full preview this time… BUT I figured I’d use what I already had and post this Mini Preview of sort!

SBS vs. Los Luchas

PWG Records: Excalibur is 11-13 overall, Disco Machine is 8-16 overall, Phoenix Star is 5-7 and Zokre is 4-8, 2-4 as a duo

Thoughts: Really not much to be said about Los Luchas that won’t make you end up sounding like a broken record (or a skipping IPOD for all you moderneers out there) when speaking of their matches. They are one of the most entertaining teams around, and you always get a lot of great high flying action from a Los Luchas match.

And SBS last month looked revitalized after adopting their new evil ways. They truly brought the hatred out of the fans. I’m sure there haven’t been as many “Disco is gay” chants going around since the late 1970’s

Expect a really entertaining match here (that's so insightful it hurts I know...)

Prediction: SBS.

Joey Ryan vs. "Double C" Claudio Castagnoli

PWG Records: Joey Ryan is 11-16 overall, Double C will be making his PWG debut (Pointless fact: This is the first PWG debut since Sexxy Eddy in May)

Thoughts: PWG continues it’s great tradition of bringing wrestling’s best and brightest to Southern California, as they present to you, the much acclaimed Claudio Castagnoli from the great country of Switzerland ! The same Country that brought you cheese, Army Knifes, William Tell, banks in which to store stolen money and of course Johanna Spyri’s immortal HEIDI

One of the main draws of this show for me, is the debut of Double C. It’s a happy coincidence that PWG would choose to bring in Claudio Castagnoli, just as I’ve really started to get into his work. He’s really been producing some CHOICE~ (Note: I hate that word) matches in promotions like Chikara, CZW, IWA:MS within the last year or so. His CZW Best of The Best in particular was a real star making outing. And made a few fat guys stand up and go "THAT THERE GERMAN GUY B GOOD!" Can’t wait to see what he has for us here…

And plus, he will be facing, perhaps my favorite PWG character, Joey Ryan. Whose luck has really turned around lately, as he’s coming off two big singles victories, over Alex Shelley and Mr. Excitement? Can he make it three in a row and build momentum going into the Battle for Los Angeles?

NOW match quality really isn’t in question here, as both combatants as just incredible technical wrestlers (watch out for the lethal SWISS UPPERCUTS from CC) and this is sure to be a real tes.. err Andrew Martin for both of them.

My only question here is the Face/Heel dynamic. Now, Joey Ryan of course is despised by the PWG faithful… as he routinely picks on small children, kicks poodles for distance and of course his biggest crime of all…. listening to MxPx {shudder} On the other side, Double C to my knowledge has never played anything but the “heel” so to speak. So who knows what will happen in that respect. ,

Prediction: Joey Ryan takes it.

Davey Richards Vs. Rocky Romero

PWG records: Davey Richards is 2-3, Rocky Romero is 6-4 overall

Thoughts: AWWWWWWW man. This is the good stuff right here. We almost have a bit of mirror match here, with both men being big practitioners of the JAPANESE FLAVA! Especially with the ye old kicks.

Davey Richard (or MR INTENSITY as he’s known in some circles and a few triangles) in particular has really been on a tear in SoCal lately, with impressive appearances for not only PWG but WAR, AWS, UPW and WPW (where he recently won the 2005 “Best of the West” tournament) As weel, as really impressing at PWG’s two anniversary with two SWANK~ (Note: I also hate that word) matches against TJ Perkins and also Shannon Ballard of all people.

Also of note here, is the fact that this match will mark Rocky Romero’s first match back from the unfortunate injury that put him out of the NJPW BOTSJ, and as well as his first match back in PWG since All Star Weekend Night 1 (not to mention his first PWG singles since his stellar meeting with current PWG champion AJ Styles at last year’s “Reason for the Season”) Will be at 100%? Will we ever see a dominate white heavyweight boxer? The world may never know.

Now, in each write up I like to award.. one match as my "sleeper match of the night" The match I think will take everyone by surprise and make you say "wow... that took me by surprise" and this time, no doubt in my mind, this match will be the sleeper match of the evening. Be ready... for umm something... something good that is.

Prediction: Rocky Romero

X-Division Title Match

Christopher Daniels vs. Chris Hero

Past History: Chris Hero/CM Punk vs. Daniels/Messiah – Tango and Cash, Hero vs. Daniels - All Star Weekend Night Two (It’s funny that in all the places these two have both worked over the years… the only place they’ve ever met has been in PWG)

PWG Records: Chris Daniels is 10-8-1 overall, Christopher Hero is 4-4 overall

My Thoughts: Christopher Daniels has suffered his share of set backs in PWG. As he’s suffered a few losses (Tony Stradlin, Bobby Quance and Frankie Kazarian) but for the most part, Daniels has been on fire in PWG (both figuratively and sometimes literally) for the majority of his PWG career. Scoring victories in his tenure over B-Boy, Hardcore Kid, Nosawa, Jack Evans, Kevin Steen, Alex Shelley, El Generico, Chris Sabin, taking PWG Champion AJ Styles to a 60 minute draw…

But it was his match with Chris Hero at All Star Weekend Night 2 what some would call his greatest PWG bout to date. In a match a bound with psychology, it was Daniels barely escaping with the X-Division title by managing to take Hero’s legs out from under him.

Chris Hero, always one to learn from his mistakes and PBS television is coming back to PWG to finish what he started at All Star Weekend. Can only imagine what kind of psychological warfare we'll see from these two ring generals. We could see one for the proverbial ages (proverbially speaking that is)

The only flaw in this match… has to be the X-division title being on line. Yeah, we’d all love to see a title change at a PWG event... but come on. That sadly removes alot of possible drama from the match-up.

But hey.. it's still two of the best in world right now doing that they do best! Right? Right....? 8) and hey you never can tell.... can you? Heck, your parents could be aliens... like in that TV show "My parents are aliens" not that I've ever actually watched that...

My Prediction: I’d like to say that the outcome was in question here… but it really isn’t, Match will be really good though… that’s all that matters.

Match for held up PWG Tag belts.

Arrogance Vs. Two Skinny Black Guys

PWG Records: Scott Lost is 19-11 overall & Chris Bosh is 14-11 overall, 9-1 as a duo, El Generico is 4-6 overall and Human Tornado is 3-11 overall. 1-0 as a duo.

Thoughts: I’d be lying if I said that Arrogance matches weren’t the matches I always most look forward to on most PWG cards. Because with in every Arrogance match you are not only guaranteed a high quality contest, but some damn funny pre and post match antics as well. The rise of Arrogance in PWG has been a sight to behold.

However, the Arrogance runaway freight train of success and blacker jokes was derailed last month as after what can really only be described as a classic match, Arrogance’s 10 month title reign and Scott Lost’s 13 month death grip on the titles came to an end.

Just as Arrogance’s reign came to an end… another team’s legacy… had just begun. As long time crowd favorites, EL Generico and Human Tornado formed what could be the most entertaining tag team since Rene Dupree and Kenzo Sukuzi! You’d really be hard press to find a better “babyface” unit than Tornado and Generico (TNA fans, imagine D-Ray and Shark Boy w/o Lava Girl and WITH talent)

Yes, here you have a truly beloved team vs. a truly hated team. This kind of clear cut good vs. evil conflict is usually reserved for Italian weddings and Raiders games.

Prediction: I’d say “Two Skinny Black Guys” take the titles. Human Tornado has had great luck in title matches this year, where’s captured the posthumous RevPro Junior-heavyweight title, as well as the AWS Lightweight and the AWS World title.

PWG Title Match

AJ Styles vs. Kevin Steen

Past History: Met in a 2/3 falls match for EWR, a 4-way in PWG and Kevin Steen actually teamed with AJ Styles in EWR against Chris Daniels and Excess 69

PWG records: Kevin Steen is 6-5 overall, AJ Styles is 6-2-2 overall

Thought: Now this one is huge, at any given show, you’d be hard press to find two guys in PWG getting better reactions than AJ Styles or Kevin Steen (give or take a Super Dragon of course)

Both man, have also been just RED HOT in PWG, Steen with his UNBELIEVABLE match with Super Dragon last month, and AJ with several terrific contests with Chris Daniels and James Gibson. This one should be AMAZING dipped in awesome.

And not since Adam Pearce Vs. Frankie Kazarian at Reason for the Season has the outcome of a PWG title match been more in doubt, this really could go either way.

I think Kevin Steen is ready for the title, but I also think AJ could realistically hold it a while longer. And could Super Dragon perhaps play a role in the outcome? It’s anyone’s guess… but just because it would be redundant to do a “thoughts and predictions” thread without giving a prediction….

Prediction: Kevin Steen walks out with the gold

Plus

Super Dragon, who is coming off an unheard of 5 match losing streak!

The PUMA PINOY BOY! TJ Perkins (The man with the 14-5 Overall record.

The newly single and sassy, Quicksilver!

{Insert Rafael Palmeiro joke here} Hook Gun (Hook Bomberry and Top Gun Talwar)

Who know what will happen with these guy, stuff like Quicksilver Vs. Perkins, SD Vs. Perkins, Hook Gun Vs. anyone... all should be fun matches. Just can't lose here....

So yeah, attend the show, buy the dvds, read the book ETC...

Man, being in the Mid-West sucks.  The only thing we got is OVW.  I love the show title and agree.

If you're in or near Illinois, New Midwest Wrestling (www.newmidwest.com) is excellent. I used to train with those guys and go to all the shows, but I was a fan before I became friends with the workers, and I can say without bias that their shows offer some of the best wrestling you'll see in the US for a cost of $8 per show. Check out one of their DVDs if you don't believe me.

Back on topic, I really need to get to LA for one of these shows. The only problem is that I have no car, and while I can take the Metrolink to LA, it doesn't run late enough to get me home. Any TSM members willing to give me a couch or floor to crash on after a show until I can take the train back to Riverside in the morning? Heh, doubtful...

If my brother wasn't a two faced, fiscally irresponsible pain, I'd be there.

He's making me miss Double C in California.

Bastard.

If you need a ride, head to SoCalUncensored.com and ask the board for a ride. There's some people who love out in Riverside and are really cool.
