Ultimate Fight Night on SPIKE TV

Recommended Posts

How does one judge have 29-27 for Cote? Which round was 10-8? I guess when Leben slipped he thought it was a boxing match, counted it as a knockdown and made it 10-8, that's fucking retarded. Even worse is that another judge had 30-27 for LEBEN? Stupid. I thought Cote should have won, and they just kept pushing Leben the whole time like honestly, I like Cote, but he is NOT a top level 185 lb'er.

I thought that they were actually building Tito up at certain points, talking about how everyone wants to train with him and such. But yeah, the "Cote knocked him down and can't knock down Leben" got tired.

I called it, they're showing Swick's fight. They should put him in there with someone whose not a joke, see how "quick" he is then.

Well, that wasn't a good main event for a free UFC show. AS was shown by the fans. Considering when you want to bring in more fans you expect something like Bonnar/Griffin.

The more I think about it, one good fight really in Hoger/Bonnar. Cote/Leben was okay but there was lots of boring clinchwork in there too. These guys aren't exactly Randy/Vitor(who has very underrated takedown defense from the clinch). The quick fights are okay I guess, but to round it out you need good solid fights across the board, and that didn't happen.

"I got quick hands~!".

Man that was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it ass whooping.

Salaverry didn't do a good job of showing the fact that he was shit-scared to go in straight and hang w/ Marquart.

Nate wouldn't won but the decison was bullshitty.

Koscheck continues to improve.

SAM~! Man, he impressed me tonight, I thought Bonnar was done once he got the head and arm choke. Great job of neutralizing Bonnar's kicks. Too bad the same couldn't be said for his strikes.

Leben shows that he has a Homer Simpson Head (credit: Rudo).

Too many commercials, bad main event, the rest was aight.

It's funny, cause Curry and I were scared for the fight between Quarry/Sell because Peoples was reffing. When I say funny, its more sad funny than haha funny, because it should be obvious to the UFC that the guy is one of the worst refs ever. If the back of sells head hit the canvas, then I could almost see it justified, but it didn't.

I don't even want to talk about Salaverry. Ok, his name should be Salaverry Boring.

1st round of Leben/Cote was okay. When they let things go, it was good, but not enough in the clinch.

A write-up from my man Blue:

All things considered, I'd say UFN turned out to be a solid but inconsistent night of fights. Here are my fight by fight impressions.....

Josh Koscheck x Pete Spratt

Don't even try and downplay the significance of Koscheck's performance tonight. This is a guy who has gone from one dimensional wrestler to fluid mixed martial artist in the span of a year and change. Koscheck should not be able to control distance against a striker like Spratt or straddle the back like a jiu-jitsu player but somehow he did and more importantly, made it look easy.

Nathan "The Rock" Quarry x Pete Sell

Sell looked very good standing but like every grappler who thinks they can bang standing, got rocked by the first clean punch he took. Quarry waited for his opening and seemed to be following up rather well until Cecil Peoples decided to make a man sandwich. Poor stoppage by Peoples but Sell dug his own grave.

Sam Hoger x Stephan Bonnar

Bonnar needs to get his cardio conditioning together because Hoger was just asking to get stopped at several points throughout the fight before Bonnar's gas tank failed him. Aside from that, Bonnar outclassed Hoger thoroughly.

Mike Swick x Gideon Ray

Swick's stance still worries me but that combination he landed on Ray was gorgeous. Thats not to say Ray didn't practically invite Swick to KO him when he threw a lead straight right(?) from across the ring and proceeded to drop his left (!?!) like thats what youre supposed to do when you throw a right. Ray would have won this fight had he simply shot in on Swick, did anyone else notice the sweet single leg Ray scored on Dean?

Patrick Cote x Chris Leben

Chris Leben is giving Joe Riggs a serious run for his money as MMA's most hypocritical brawler. Anytime either of those characters gets taken down I can almost hear their tear ducts starting to rupture, but throw them in with a *gasp* good fighter and suddenly both guys are shooting in like were at the Olympic freestyle finals. Good performance by both men with Leben clearly deserving the decision thanks to his steady work on the ground.

Nathan Marquardt x Ivan Salaverry

Salaverry shut down after Marquardt landed a right outside leg kick that looked like it may have injured the Candian Dandy's leg. The story of the fight was Marquardt stalking while Salaverry was content to sit back and hope that Marquardt would be dumb enough to hand him the match. It takes two to tango and Salaverry left his dancing shoes at AMC pankration.

Oh, Swick definately left his chin out there, but that was just a beautiful combo.

It was a better than decent show. Hogar-Bonnar was good, Cote-Leben was okay (and showed some good flashes), three quick finishes that were good for what they were, and a boring Salaverry-Marquadt fight. For free tv, that's a good show. I would have liked to have seen Karalexis/Florian from what the reports said.

That's true as well. This would be disappointing if you expected a PPV level event, which most of us did. For a show on Free Tv, it's a damn good show. Compared to wrestling, how many times do you ever get a great match on raw plus a few other good fights? Not really ever.

One of my biggest problems, and this is something that even the WWE doesn't do, was the commercials. My god the commercials. Those COQ ROQ commercials lasted longer than the majority of the matches. I know it's only their second live show on cable, but goddamn, they need better production. They just weren't ready for it.

However, I have to say, I was impressed that they got as many sponsors as they did - US Army, Toyota, BK, Four Brothers (A movie choosing to advertise on UFC, that's huge IMO). Sponsorship is the one of the most (Thee most) important things in television, hopefully it is sustained.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth about the show, hopefully the UFC PPV (St Pierre/Trigg!!!) will wash it out. Plus the Unleashed shows and TUF II. There's nothing worse than a bad match and bad calls, and this show had both of em. That's it, I'm never doing a preview of a show ever again. Clearly, I am bad luck. Sorry, it's all my fault.

The main card is a typical UFC PPV style card - 5 fights. However, this time I doubt they will show any extra fights from the undercard due to commercial restraints. Unless Mike Swick manages to stop another fight in under 30 seconds...

- RRR previewing TUF :)

They should keep feeding Swick guys he can KO in under a minute. Have his gimmick be "He's spent a total of 43 seconds in the octagon... 67 seconds.... 90 seconds... etc."
