National Lampoon rips on Futurama

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few episodes of Shinzo while looking for something to watch early in the morning. It's an action anime involving some girl who wakes up in the future, finds that humans are pretty much extinct, and then travels with a few evolved beings of a typically hostile race, as they try to find the last human refuge and spread peace or whatever the fuck. There's some obvious Journey to the West elements there, which I always love, but overall the series isn't any good... still, as far as children's anime in this country goes, it's better than most.

The signs of a dying publication include:

Not being popular in over 20 years

Not being on most print racks (I haven't seen NL on newsstands in YEARS if ever)

Attacking what's new, hip, and different then you

Making unsuccessful movies with B-Level actors

Attacking said hip and new things on your web site

I swear if it wasn't for the checks coming in on those old NL movies, they'd have been dead years ago...

Agreed on all points. I think at this point, National Lampoon might benefit from an assisted suicide. All they're doing now is defecating on their own legacy (even if they only have three good movies).

I have to say that I'm loving the new season of Harvey Birdman.

Same here. I just wish it would get more viewers.

I just love that they turned Wally Gator into a psychotic redneck. How could anyone hate that?

Yeah, that was great. There's something undeniably cool about taking old Hanna-Barbara characters and giving them a strange, modern twist.

Wow, that Lampoon bit wasnt funny at all. Since when was showing Family Guy over and over and over and motherfucking over a bad thing? I still at least chuckle a little everytime I see the same old jokes over and over. They play it a lot because people watch it a lot. I know tons of people who would watch FG reruns over almost anything on at that time slot,

Oh come on, you guys, Adult Swim bumpers are the lamest shit around, except for most of the actual programs featured. How they can try and act hip between their loser shows is anyone's guess. Adult Swim was custom-made for guys in their early twenties who never emerge from their parents' basements, and you can't deny it. I'm not an expert on what's cool, but there's gotta be something cooler than Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab. And everything is more socially acceptable than anime. Futurama is overrated, and everybody has all the first three Family Guy seasons by now anyway. Adult Swim sucks. National Lampoon sucks less. Game over.

No, there's not. Space Ghost Coast To Coast was funny nine years ago. That's the extent of it, and also, I was in 5th grade.

By the way, I watched the Flash video, and you guys would all be going "pwned!" if you actually had good taste in television (i.e. you didn't watch Adult Swim), because they pretty much nailed the whole schtick.

"Lamest shit around"? Please. Adult Swim entertains the majority of people who watch it, National Lampoon does not. Whenever something becomes popular, some people will always hate it. That's pretty much a fact. It rubs some people the wrong way that others can like something so much, yet they can't understand why. Let's call this what it is--National Lampoon is trying to leech off Adult Swim's popularity because they're not relevent anymore. That's it.

Most of your "arguments" seem to be based around generalizations that have nothing to do with actual fact. You're basically saying that "Adult Swim sucks because I say it does." That doesn't work as an argument. They're doing something right if so many people are willing to defend them. Or maybe National Lampoon is just THAT bad. Either way it doesn't matter.

You have a banner comprising Japanese cartoon characters, of course you're going to bat for them. I don't care how relevant National Lampoon is. Adult Swim isn't relevant at all, beyond "hey they show Family Guy!" The whole presentation of Adult Swim is just lame. Not cool. Pretentious without a reason to be. I know I'm going to be lonely in my dissent over here, but seriously, the video was dead-on. It wasn't laugh-out-loud funny, but it was dead-on.

I agree with Czech.

Adult Swim is getting mighty pretentious and has changed from what it used to be IMO. And their bumps aren't very funny, they aren't "hip". They just happen to have gotten ratings due to programming Family Guy and Futurama re-runs and that is what Adult Swim is based on.

Not to mention it helped kill the late night good cartoons. Ones you young fucks don't appreciate like the old Hanna Barbera's and such.

Yes, because Adult Swim only features anime. Try again.

As I said before, all you're doing here is saying "Adult Swim sucks because I say it does." That lacks substance. You're putting down something and trying to convince people you're right because it's YOUR opinion. And people can't have different opinions, can they? If you say something sucks, there's no way it couldn't, right? Newsflash: Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's bad.

I'm not trying to put you down here, but come on, man. I don't care if you don't like Adult Swim. That's your call. But to rag on people who do like it and to say it's awful just because you don't like it is just fucked up.

Hey, I mentioned the revoiced 60s/70s cartoons, didn't I?

As I said before, all you're doing here is saying "Adult Swim sucks because I say it does."

No, I said "Adult Swim sucks because they are trying to affect a hipness that they do not possess."

You're putting down something and trying to convince people you're right because it's YOUR opinion.

Nooooo, I just said my opinion was, minus "I think that" in all necessary instances because it's redundant.

JUST FUCKED UP! FUUUUCKED UP! Drinking the blood of a virgin kitten is fucked up. Ripping on Adult Swim is just harmless fish-in-a-barrel fun.

You tried to dismiss me defending Adult Swim because of some irrelevant fact about what I like. You ignore the fact that most of Adult Swim's ratings come from the comedy shows.

No, I said "Adult Swim sucks because they are trying to affect a hipness that they do not possess."

And who decides who possesses hipness? You? You can't please everyone all the time. No matter how popular something is, there will always be a few who hate it. All Adult Swim can do is try to entertain most of the people who watch their shows.

Nooooo, I just said my opinion was, minus "I think that" in all necessary instances because it's redundant.

And yet you went on a rant about how Adult Swim is made for people who live with their parents. It doesn't look like you respect the opinions of others, so why should your own opinion be respected by others? Can't you at least give others that courtesy?

Making unsuccessful movies with B-Level actors

Actually the National Lampoon DTV films are doing excellently. They've got sweet distribution deals with MGM, and then another contract with a company called Silver Nitrate. I believe Nitrate is financing certain projects. Either that, or they're handling international licensing.

Just because something goes DTV doesn't mean it's unsuccesful. Most NL films spend at least a few weeks on the top DVD Premiere renters list. More and more films are being designed for, and released DTV, with budgets going well over $15 million.

Those who assume make asses of themselves.

I saw Dorm Daze, one of the worst teen comedies I've ever seen. I enjoy Adult Swim from time to time, I'm not a huge fan but come on, it's WAY WAY more cooler than National Lampoon is. National Lampoon making fun of Adult Swim seems bitter, because Adult Swim isn't THAT popular but it does have the audience that National Lampoon once had twenty years ago. It just seems like National Lampoon is trying to be a counterculture to the counterculture.

National Lampoon should just make fun of everything, like MAD does, or used to, at least. I haven't read that since the bastards sold out. Then people wouldn't get uptight about one particular thing, and if they did, we'd know they were assholes.

NL's Latest Masterpeice

National Lampoon could gain some redemption if they tried to make good movies, and not stupid, teen comedies. I'm not saying re-make Animal House, but they ended up making another Christmas Vacation film, and it sucked. I've seen their magazine around here, but's it's a former shell of it's once comedy glory. I'm glad for the good old days of the magazine, Animal House, and other classics.
