Hogan, Vince know best

BY SCOTT FISHMAN

Miami Herald Writer

Hulk Hogan wore many bandannas throughout his career -- pro wrestling icon, movie star and marketing money maker.

Now at 52, the Hulkster adds reality star to the list with his hit VH1 reality show Hogan Knows Best.

The show -- which follows Hogan, his wife Linda, teenage daughter Brooke and teenage son Nick in their everyday lives -- debuted on the network July 10. The show became the No. 1 rated telecast in the sought after 18-49 demographic for the night.

The 1.9 rating made it the highest rated series premiere in the network's history and the highest rated regular episode telecast ever. This is just another reason why Hulk still rules and why another season is already in production for the first quarter of 2006.

Despite the media blitz Hogan and family garner including an appearance on Larry King Live, he continues his comeback with WWE including a main event against The Showstopper Shawn Michaels at SummerSlam on Sunday, Aug. 21 on pay-per-view.

It also marks Hogan's first match at the summer spectacular in 14 years. The Hulkamania revival earlier this year was in the works with an unexpected call from Vince McMahon.

''I was actually sitting in the middle of a Sunday watching TV and my daughter says Vince McMahon is on the phone,'' said Hogan. 'I'm like, `Ok, well last time I read on the Internet I was never going to work there again.' So that was kind of freaky seeing Vince call me.

'We started talking, and I don't' know how to describe our relationship except that it's a love-hate deal. We are so much alike. We don't get along sometimes, but when we're on there's nobody better. So when he called me I was excited about talking to him and chew the fat.

``He was just talking about Hulk Hogan being the Babe Ruth and relaunching the brand and getting back in the mix with the company. This had nothing to do with the wrestling. One thing led to the other with the Hall of Fame and me going to the ring [at WrestleMania 21].

``I had already made the deal for the TV show. So it was just a coincidence that it would run simultaneously.''

While attempting to get Brooke's singing career off the ground and Nick's aspirations for Hollywood, Hogan still remains active in the ring. Even after his recent hip replacement surgery and taking into account the decades of physical abuse he incurred over his career, he has wrestled a handful of matches the last few months.

Hogan remains a big part of Raw -- a brand filled with many superstars who were in elementary school when Hogan was slamming Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III or teaming with Mr. T.

''The hip has been holding up pretty good,'' said Hogan. ``The thing that has been bothering me is my lower back. I've been having a problem with that for a couple of years and having four bulging discs I know it's crazy being in the ring.

``If my back is the main thing, then the number two thing is my knee. I had it done about four years, and I was only supposed to have one match with the Rock and that was it.

``I was supposed to have that redone, and I've been doing the old Fred Sanford shuffle since then. Sooner or later it's going to go, but I hope I blow it out in the ring, not walking down to Burger King or something.''

Hogan's next challenge comes from an old nemesis in Kurt Angle on Monday on Raw in Montreal. Considering his history with the Olympic Gold medalist, Hogan is not looking forward to it.

''I've been meaning to talk to Vince about this Monday crap with Kurt Angle,'' said Hogan, ``because every time I get in the ring with him I get hurt. If I would just have sat around on a lawn chair until SummerSlam because I can only have so many matches on my knee and my hip because they were both replaced -- if it's about the pay-per-views and the big matches then we need to rethink Hulk Hogan going in the ring with Kurt Angle because it's dangerous as the day is long.''

No doubt VH1 cameras will roll when this collision occurs on Raw and at SummerSlam. However, it is Terry Bollea not Hulk Hogan who is bringing an audience to his reality show.

''It's a real accurate description of what I am like in real life,'' said Hogan. ``The Terry Bollea part and with the creative side, which I guess this weekend the truth I actually got naked by accident. My wife and I were having a romantic vacation. I drink a lot of beer, but I never drank Crystal before. I drank a couple of bottles of that. We were supposed have this massage on the roof of the hotel.

'When the two massage tables were up there, the massage people said, `You can get in your robes now,' and they went inside. So of course with whatever that champagne buzz on I asked my wife, 'Are we supposed to be in our underwear or naked?' She goes, 'Well whatever you want.' When she said that, I thought I was just out there with her, and I took my clothes off.

``The hidden cameras were right there and from that Crystal alone I forgot about it. They took Hulk Hogan with a hat rag and a black face, and they covered up King Triton. But if it does for me what it did to Paris Hilton maybe we should let him out.''

I know you're a blind Hogan mark jf, but you do realise that everything that comes out his mouth is a work don't you?

Someone else let me know what he says in reply; I've got him on Ignore, and can't see what he posts.

I hope Angle breaks the fake hip on Monday.

Besides, the "match" will probably be like the Batista-Angle match on raw before Vengeance. a quick 2 min affair, and then HBK runs in and beats up hogan.

Sounds like Hogan doesn't want to work, unless he gets a big ppv pay day.

Meltzer said Unforgiven may be HHH vs Hogan if HHH agrees to return before 10/3.

It's obvious Hogan wants to stick around. He shouldn't stay too long though.

Hogan never got his job back from Angle from KOTR, yet has he?

IIRC, Hogan beat Angle to decide who would face Lesnar for his Undisputed Title shot before Summerslam.

According to http://www.100megsfree4.com/wiawrestling/p...wf/smck2002.htm, Hogan beat Angle by DQ only (August 1st 2002, one week before Hogan's final WWE match of 2002 against Lesnar), making Angle one of the few wrestlers to remain 1-0 against Hogan.

If HHH/Hogan happens at Unforgiven, I'd imagine it means HHH is returning as a heel. At least it keeps HHH away from Cena a little longer, but how many more 'One Last Match' matches do they plan to squeeze out of Hogan ? Hogan vs Austin is the only one that matters.
