Now, a purely hypothetical situation here, but for instance, is there any sort of security issues or any other issues (apart from moral) with leeching off of someone else's unprotected wireless network connection?

 

Furthermore, is there any way for someone to recognize an individual logging onto their connection?

Yes to the first question, double-super-mega yes to the second. Finding out what's connected to a wireless network is easy as hell. All access points and routers have a configuration page the owner can log into that shows what it's serving local IPs to.

Again, hypothetically speaking here, but wouldn't someone who is smart enough to access the configuration page be smart enough to actually, you know, secure the network?

Sure most people who don't enable security will probably not know enough to check the config page. But one day, they will call teh people at D-Link asking why they're download limit is busted while they did nothing, and the tech support will ask them to look at their config page. I know because i used to work as a tech for D-Link.

 

Other than that, in Quebec, it is illegal to leech off other people's connections so it can get you in trouble, not to mention the fact that if you are on the same network as someone and you have even the slightest folder shared, you could be in troubles too. Maybe the guy has a hacker son/nphew/brother who will give you some troubles.
