This Week In Baseball

Recommended Posts

Pedro shuts out the Braves. That was pretty cool to watch, at least.

Plus, Jacobs is looking more and more like a suitable first baseman next year.

"many times the best team doesn't win series."

This is exactly what I don't buy. The game is all about playing in those series, it's the point of everything, the end goal, so to say "the better team lost" doesn't work, becaue if they were the better team, they would of won when it came time to prove that.

If the Cardinals win 105 games in an effort to get to the world series and the Red Sox win 95, I'm not gonna say the team that got swepted in 4 games was better just because they won more games when it didn't count.

The idea is that in a seven game series, upsets can happen. A ball travels ten feet further and a game turns out completely differently. Look at the 2001 World Series. Does a single half inning really determine who is truly the better team? The difference between a .250 hitter and a .300 hitter is ONE hit a week. Random occurance has a ton to do with a short series.

However, if a team is swept, that is certainly an emphatic message. Considering the difference in schedules, it is reasonable to think the Sox may very well have been better overall.

If the Yankees lose tonights game I want Torre fired immediately. I want Randy Johnson, Alan Embree, FRod and Scott Proctor all released. Yankees had a 11-3 lead and it is now 11-10. Unbelievable.

Proctor was fine. Torre left him in way too long. FRod sucks, just terrible. Sturtze turning back into Devil Ray Sturtze has killed this bullpen.

edit: This game is up to Sturtze. Gordon isn't being used tonight. Mo probably will, even though he looked fatigued last night. If Chacon wasn't starting tomorrow, I'd bet he'd come in.

I wonder if Anglesault has a noose ready? What really gets to me is that weak hit groundball to second base that Giambi hit when the Yankees had second and third, one out and didn't score a run.

You get a run off Mo just like that. A walk or a bloop, a stolen base, and another bloop are most of his blown saves.

edit: And Mo gets the job done.

Phew.

Also, Bonds goes deep for hist first HRer of the season.

Don't tell me yet another good Wakefield start is going to be wasted. This offense has been just pitiful in September so far. It's Ortiz and eight outs right now.

The Red Sox had a significant advantage in starting pitching. St.Louis really lacked any starters, with overpowering stuff.

And the fact that the heart of St. Louis' order did exactly jack and shit in that series (topped by Rolen's 0 for the series). Though I guess that would be more of a result of the Sox starters being totally overpowering.

EDIT: 1-2-3 9th, all looking. Oy. Looks like Wake's going 10 tonight.

If its about the Giambi thing, theres just no way anyone knew he'd turn it around like he has. With the way he was hitting, how he looked at the plate, its quite incredible where he is now.

Game and season most likely over for the Marlins.

Three consecutive errors misplays in the 9th inning. All that was missing was the white towel...

Thank God I didn't get the game today on Fox. It would have pissed me off even worse.

That was HUGE for the Phillies. They may have finally gotten over the hump against Florida. If they beat Beckett tomorrow, they could very well end Florida's playoff hopes and have great confidence heading to Atlanta next Tuesday.

This could be a horrible day for pitching in Toronto. This ump is squeezing both pitchers like crazy.

edit: UGH. The Yanks continue to leave people on. 4 in two innings.
