HURRICANE WILMAAAAAAAA

You shouldn't be. You'll be getting a Category 1, if anything.

Ophelia was more hardcore than this one'll be for you.

I hope all of those yuppie fucker cities down there are wiped out. When they were showing the potential landfall area in Florida on CNN, their Google Earth zooming and panning around showed way too many fucking golf courses down there. No area like that deserves to keep on in such a way.

And I'll bet those people will have every insurance claim met with complete compliance. Fuck insurance companies too.

Granted, some parts of this city are prone to flooding, but I've always lived on fairly safe ground. Same goes for electricity; one of the storms last year knocked out power for a few areas in Jax for upwards of two weeks, whereas my neighborhood only lost it for roughly 45 minutes.

Hey! I live on a golf course, and this is firmly a lower-middle class neighborhood. Well, by a golf course anyways.

Yes, it's not everyone's fault that they seem to be the terrain instead of the actual terrain, but hey, collateral damage happens.

Hurricane Wilma remains a dangerous Category 4 hurricane (sustained winds 145 mph) as it now closes in on the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula. It is in the process of producing massive damage along the Yucatan Coast, including the resorts of Cozumel and Cancun, as the western side of the eyewall brushes by. Right now, Wilma is moving slowly but steadily to the north-northwest at 6 mph. Any temporary stalling will only prolong the destruction.

Rainfall amounts through Saturday may total between 10 to 20 inches for parts of the Yucatan and anywhere from 10 inches along the coast to as much as 40 inches over the mountains in western Cuba.

The coastal storm surge north of the eye will be in the 7-to-11-foot range above the regular tide levels for the northeast Yucatan from Cozumel northward. Moreover, battering waves of 15 to 35 feet will punish the coastlines producing severe beach erosion. Swells from Wilma are emanating northward toward the U.S. Gulf Coast from the Mississippi-Alabama border to the Suwanee River, producing high surf.

As the eyewall brushes the northeast Yucatan coast, Category-4-strength winds will cause the complete destruction of poorly built structures. Wilma's hurricane force winds extend out 85 miles from its center.

Over the weekend, Wilma is expected to come under the influence of stronger westerly winds aloft blowing across the Gulf, shifting the hurricane toward southern Florida by Monday. The interaction with land as the hurricane brushes past the Yucatan Peninsula plus the increasing influence of westerly shear and even some mid-level dry air intrusion could weaken Wilma considerably before it directly affects Florida.

My parents own a vacation condo in Naples, which like Miami is dead center of the storm track, but on the gulf. I doubt that will earn me any sympathy, but damnit I like being able to go to the Southern Florida gulf coast whenever I want.

Besides, it's located in the Naples ghetto. Of course, that just means it's in the working/middle class area and on a golf course. But, we don't get golf course privileges .

Is Golden Gate even considered part of Naples? Or did you mean Golden Gate Parkway

And we've officially got a hurricane watch! Issued for the Keys, the southwest coast of Florida, wrapping all the way up the east coast to Titusville, so this means a couple days off from school/work.

Got my mom's place plywooded up this morning. Gas is still available for the most part, although I should gas up my work truck, as diesel will probably be hard to come by.

Normally I'd work on monday, but that doesn't look likely at all.

Wilma's looking kinda weak now too. 100 MPH winds as it crossed over the Yucatan, though it's expected to strengthen to at least a Category 3 before weakening right before it hits you guys (Max and Supes) head on as a 2 then crosses over to me and out of SoFla as a Category 1 and dies out.

This storm sure has really taken its sweet fuckin time, the good news is this means I get a couple days off from school without my city suffering any real damage aside from power outages and downed trees/light poles/road signs.

In other hurricane news, Tropical Storm ALPHA is out there by the Southeastern Bahamas. Awesome. They said it probably won't affect the U.S. Mainland, though. Interestingly enough, the forecast track for Alpha and Wilma has them possibly crashing into each other. This interests me greatly as to what could happen WHEN HURRICANES COLLIDE.

After she's done with Florida, Wilma is supposed to turn into Nor'easter Wilma and dump fucking SNOW in upstate NY, Vermont and New Hampshire.

Crazy.

Well, the hurricane's here and my electricity once again shows its ability to outweather any tropical cyclone.

I probably shouldn't jinx myself, but it's pretty amazing that only my apartment and two others in my complex have power, including every single street light. Trees gettin' knocked down right now too, all that good stuff.

Comcast deserves some major props for keeping my broadband connection alive, too.

On CNN last night (this morning) there was a reporter out in the rain and behind him a couple was fucking against a wall the whole time he was there. Both he and the two at the desk were speculating, then realizing, then trying to ignore. It was classic television.

I think I need to watch CNN more often.

Wasn't there supposed to be a X,Y, or Z hurricane, or do they just skip those letters?

Hurricane Yvonne sounds too Gary Larsonish.  Hurricane Alpha is much more impending doomish.

Yeah, good point. Hurricane Omega would have to be the ultimate hurricane though if they ever reach that.

Although I don't see a problem with Hurricane Xaiver or Hurricane Zach.

Wow, this hasn't been a very active thread considering Wilma's the third costliest hurricane in history, right behind Katrina and Andrew.

So yeah, I guess I did jinx myself as I didn't have power (which for South Floridians is a bitch because apparently the concept of using gas as energy is lost on us down here- everything in the kitchen, and just about every utility, including water heating, is electric-powered.

This is also the worst power outage caused by a natural disaster in our country's history, nearly 3 million people were left without power, and it's still over 1.2 million, but FPL seems to be working their ass off. I know what y'all are waiting for.. pictures of destruction!

Kotz will be happy to see golf courses destroyed:

Nice sense of irony here:

What I'm really looking for is the pictures of downtown Miami. Almost every major office building in downtown had its windows blown and papers/files blown all over the place, concrete everywhere.. just a total mess.

EDIT: Ah! Found some. This is in Ft. Lauderdale:

And in downtown Miami:

There was a curfew being enforced till 8pm because only 18 of the entire county's street lights were working, but it just got extended till 11pm/12am depending on where you are in South Florida.

My mom's house was powerless until friday night. We lost it for a matter of a few hours. No damage to report at my place or my mom's, but a lot of Fort Myers has just gotten power back (including traffic lights).
