No Wave

Recommended Posts

Two of my very favorite bands, Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead, apparently took their cue from the tiny no-wave movement started, (Maybe?) by the band DNA. (from which Blonde Redhead took its name, and I've never heard a song.) As a caveat, I think the early albums of those two bands are excellent, but they later far exceeded them.

The whole thing sounds ridiculously pretentious, but then, I love Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead which are ridiculously pretentious, if excellent, bands. I like the atonal, but structured scales, and the seething guitar noise. Is there anything, really, to no-wave bands?

I'd mildly suggest listening to Lydia Lunch's solo stuff before Teenage Jesus & the Jerks. It's... not for everyone, and her solo career is more approachable.

Some at least partially no wave stuff I like are Diamanda Galas (huge fan for years. Her album Shrei X is definitely no wave, but barely anyone can listen to it), and the Birthday Party, some no wave influence there.

Foetus rarely gets very no wavey, but he's really good. His side project with Lydia Lunch, called Stinkfist, is firmly within the genre.

A lot of this stuff has little replay value. For me, anyway. James Chance, DNA, etc. are kinda fun but can get very old, quickly. Glenn Branca's stuff doesn't. (His solo stuff; I don't like Theoretical Girls.)

Never checked out Liquid Liquid, though I've been meaning to change that.

For some reason, I found myself singing the Foetus song "The Only Good Christian is a Dead Christian" to myself in the shower earlier on today.
