jwpeer 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Ok let's talk FF VIII. Second best RPG ever? I say yes. I didn't appreciate RPGs till FF VII, which is weird since I love story and cinematic games. I had this whole genre of games I would have loved and just didn't even realize it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> FF VIII is the best Final fantasy of the 7-XI era. But it's not better than 4 or 6. If you like story and cinematic games, I highly reccommend Indigo Prophecy. That's a truly amazing game, though it is solely an adventure game, not rpg as it has no character/stat building type elements to it.
Guest Leelee Report post Posted November 7, 2005 I only say that because I hate how tons of gamers STILL talk about FFVII. It was a great game, and still is, but it's long past time to move on. Sorry if I offended. Anyway, my biased rating of FF's that nobody will agree with : 1. FF4 (It's linear, the general story isn't original, but I will always love the characters in this game) 2. FF7 3. FFX 4. FF6 (Last half of this game just dies...) 5. FF9 (Just couldn't get into the story at all) 6. FF8 (Decent story, but battle system kills it) 7. FFX-2 (Love the unique feel of the game... but they still screwed this puppy up bad by ignoring what people really wanted out of this sequel.) 8. FFV (Not much different than 4, except that there's no character build, and I hate the job system) I don't rate the first 3 compared to the rest.
Anya 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Well I do think FF VII is better than any of those games or any RPG I've ever played. If you think it sucks that's ok but don't try to invalidate what I'm saying by blowing it off as "fanboyism at it's peak". What is that even supposed to mean? The reason I am such a fan of the game is because it's so good. It's not like I just woke up one day and decided to blindly follow it. FF VI is probably my 4th favorite FF, behind VII, VIII and X. Those 4 are some of my all time favorite games of any genre and I play them through all like once a year. I got Indigo Prophecy last week and loved it. I thought the story kind of fell apart at the end but the first part was great. If the murder mystery stuff had been the whole game it probably would have been one of my favorites this year. Guest ABOBO Report post Posted November 7, 2005 I think Final Fantasy rankings should should get a thread of its own.
Anya 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 People continue to talk about VII because it was such a new experience for those who weren't into RPGs before. It's just really special, like Street Fighter II. FF IV is too old school for me. I can see how it would have been great back in the day but it's too simple and linear now. It's still really good, even playing it for the first time in like 2000. VI was way ahead of it's time. I think if it had been made for PSX it would have been like VII. Special K 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 X-Com, System Shock 2, Fallout and Planescape are all excellent games. I really don't think these games are quite as good as the SNES-era Square games, but i could see a case being made either way. They're, along with maybe Icewind Dale, my favorite PC RPGs by far. The Dark Sun games were pretty damn good too. I haven't played KOTOR yet, but I hear it's stellar too. A case could definitely be made for X-Com being the greatest game of all time. A squad-based tactical game that's actually creepy? Too bad Terror From the Deep was a dissapointment. Didn't they actually make X-Com for the PSX? the control must have been atrocious. FFVIII's only redeeming characteristic is Seifer, IMO. Terrible magic system, really uneven difficulty level, the plot starts good and heads downhill. The characters are pretty uninteresting I think. You know, for a series I adore, FF only has a good number of clunkers. 2 and 3, 8 and 9 are bad. 5 and X-2 had good systems, but really bad characters and plot. 4, 6, 7, and 10 are good. 1 was great for the day. Tactics is great, Tactics Advanced sucks. And I universally hate MMORPGS, and 11 looked terribly uninteresting even by MMORPG standards. 80 hours to get a Dragoon? Fuck that. PC obviously wins a best console ever competition, but I don't think that's really fair.
Anya 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Yeah X-com was out for PSX. Only reason I remember this is because a friend used to like it and the evil looking alien on the box looks scary. If FF VIII had something like Materia instead of drawing I might just like it more then VII. Drawing is so tedius, especially at the beginning. I did like not having to level up though. I always get Diablos encounter none ability asap. Like halfway through I am only fighting bosses and my junctioning is so good I don't need to have a high level. I usually get to Ultimecia at like, level 19. But everytime you have to get 100 of a spell for each character it's so boring. Tactics was so good. I was really into the story and art so much that I overlooked the fact that was hard and took so much leveling up. Tactics Advance sucked bad. You know a FF game is bad when even I won't finish it. I honestly don't know how anyone could dislike the cast of FFX-2. It's funny, cute, charming and the girls so likeable. I could see not liking the gameplay, the lack of the epic story or the nonlinear map but the characters are so good. Plus the good ending is one of my favorite moments. I love the Tidus/Yuna couple. I wanted to like XI. It's just insanely tedius and time consuming. There's also no real role playing. Everyone is in a hurry to level up or get items. You never really get into the story or your character. It's like being in a giant chat room where you have to level up.

Guest ABOBO Report post Posted November 7, 2005 FF8's polygons aren't near as eyegouging as FF7, so it has that going for it. The card game was quite nice too.

jwpeer 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Old School RPG's are good. Might and Magic VII is one of the hardest games ever. Does that count as old school? Might and Magic in general is truly old school. VI was fun, and playable, and not as hard as VII. VIII was fgun but kinda quirky and REALLY EASY (As far as M&M games go, most people not familiar with the series wouldn't agree) M&M IX was a travesty. I even finished that game too. It's funny beause my very first rpg's were console (DW 4 still has a special place in my heart) but in the end old school PC rpgs are just way more sophisticated and engaging. Special K 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Was anyone ever into the hard-core PC RPGs, like Ultima? I appreciate the detail in those games, and tried to play IV (supposedly the best in the series?) but fuck. They're just way too complex. What other classic PC RPGs were there? Darklands was pretty awesome, but buggy and incomplete. Realmz was great. I only played Daggerfall, which I didn't cotton to, but I hear the third Elder Scrolls game was great, and the fourth is highly anticipated. FFX-2 is pretty much the girliest game eve made. 99% of the story sequences are the two girls giggling at one another, then Paine attempts to say something funny, but it's just awkward, and the other two girls encourage her like she's a baby taking her first steps. Then more giggling. The battle system's just awesome, though. One thing that really hurt the FF series, IMO is the regression of the composer. 4-6 had some of the best soundtracks, culminating with the best sountrack ever for a game in FFVI. VII wasn't as good, with some really good songs. then the quality of music just plunged. PC is the unquestioned master of one of my favorite, though nearly dead, genres, the adventure game. Gabriel Knight, all the LucasArts adventures, the Longest Journey. all great games with great dialogue. Indigo Prophecy was a really nice way to update the genre, and though I haven't beaten it yet, I'm about halfway through and it's a hell of a cool game. Anya 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 FFX-2 is pretty much the girliest game eve made. That's a bad thing? I would love more games like Indigo Prophecy. I think VI, VII and VIII had great soundtracks but the quality doesn't compare to current games. Yet another reason why a FF VII remake would be the greatest thing ever. jwpeer 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Ultima IV is good, Ultima VI parts 1 and 2 are the best in that series, imho. And are in fact truly amazing, although the amount of detail in those games can be very difficult for someone to approach (But it's cool you can just go and bake some bread whenever you want) Ultima Underworld is also great, and much easier to pick up and play. Anachronox is an awesome PC RPG that didn't get nearly enough pub for how much FUN it was. Good battle system too imho, though it had its' flaws. Septerra Core was a fun PC game that might have done better on a console, it was really a console rpg on the pc, which was weird. Kahran: There is no shame in installing X-Com and playing...and you won't regret it, the game is like fine wine, changing in flavor as it ages but only for the better. Special K 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 Maybe in terms of instrumentation, but the composition for those games was stellar (though I only played FFVIII, so I don't really remember the soundtrack.) If you've ever heard the fully orchestrated scores for some of those games, they're incredible. Oh, I forgot what one last good point to FFVIII. The last both's death animation was fucking awesome. EDIT: OOh, Anachronox. I loved that game. Very funny, very innovative, and the world really drew you in. Too bad it ended without a real resolution. Septerra Core was probably the most generic RPG I've ever played, not that it was necessarily bad. I never beat it though, couldn't sustain interest.
Narcoleptic Jumper 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2005 FF8 is my favorite RPG of all time, I think. I'm one of the few who absolutely loved the Junction system and all the flexibility it offers, and for some reason I don't have any tedious memories of drawing spells. The only time I do remember drawing a lot was on the Islands Closest to Heaven/Hell, running in circles with "Enc-None" equipped. I also loved how it got rid of the need for leveling. Yay! Random battles begone! I also really really admired the art direction, the way the characters looked so lifelike (compared to FFVII), those amazing FMV sequences, and the card game, Triple Triad which I swear is the best RPG mini game of all time. I played that for hours. Though creeping up towards #2 on my list is Vagrant Story as I get closer and closer to the end. This game is pure fucking genius.
