BigPoppaKev 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 Chimaira-Chimaira and Ghost Reveries-Opeth. And I can't believe some people said there haven't been any good metal cd's this year and that some people actually liked Mesmerize by SOAD which is by far their worst album (I haven't heard Hypnotize yet and refuse to listen to it after the shit heap that was mesmerize.) Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 The only thing that comes to mind Is Sufjan. Picaresque ain't too shabby either. But I haven't bothered picking up much new stuff.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 THAT'S NOT WHAT IT'S CALLED Did you know people actually pronounce it that way? With the S at the end? Mooks.
Matt Young 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 THAT'S NOT WHAT IT'S CALLED Did you know people actually pronounce it that way? With the S at the end? Mooks. Dude... About 90%of the people out here pronounce it that way. I'll tell them I'm from Illinois (proper pronunciation, of course) and yet they still refer to it as "Illinoise" afterwards. Carnival 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 Illinois....gayest name for a state. I hate it.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 How can that be gayer than Oregon? It sounds like "organ."
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2005 Anyway back on topic, though the cover art says "Cum on feel the ILLINOISE!," or whatever it says, the album itself is officially named Illinois. Even though it's in big letters on the front and so on.
Guest step up, ghetto blaster. Report post Posted December 19, 2005 I don't have a definite pick yet. I'm leaning towards Hell's Winter, but I haven't heard most of the frontrunners in this thread save Picaresque and Late Registration. well, I've heard Be and The Minstrel Show, but Hell's Winter is better so I'm ignoring them. Set Yourself on Fire is probably my favorite album this year, but I'm reluctant to call it the best for some reason. clue me in on the Silver Jews. I know nothing of them. 5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2005 It's a Malkmus side project. If you like Pavement, you'll like Silver Jews. This is a common misconception. The primary writing force behind the Silver Jews is David Berman, and Malkmus hasn't even played on all of the Silver Jews records. While many people get into the Silver Jews because of the Pavement connection, by no means is Silver Jews "Pavement 2" or anything, and often the two sound nothing alike. EDIT: However, the band is really, really good.

EDIT: However, the band is really, really good. but often the two do sound alike. A couple of Silver Jews albums pre-Tanglewood lean a lot more towards country arrangements than Pavement ever did. There are similarities in terms of vocal delivery and moments of quirkiness but Berman is most definately his own man as a songwriter and i'd agree that most of the time they don't sound overly alike. It'd be hard to explain Opeth as a metal band anymore, let alone a good band. Album of the year is Averse Sefira - Tetragramatical Astygmata Everything else this year is riddled with AIDS
