JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 I can't believe this hasn't received any attention here so far! The 8 guys for the tournament are: Chris Hero Rocky Romero Samoa Joe Tank Roderick Strong Corporal Robinson Eddie Kingston Necro Butcher Should be an awesome tournament, hopefully we get to see Joe vs. Necro II! I'd love to see Romero vs. Hero as well as Strong vs. Necro.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 I can see at least two people in there who don't belong.
Sandman9000 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 Lemme guess: the deathmatch guys?
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 Necro most definitely belongs in there. Maybe HTQ is referring to Rocky Romero? And Corporal Robinson...well, we'll see how he does. I've heard he can be pretty good in non-deathmatches if given a chance, and although he's not some great athlete he can excel in the sort of slow paced, ground in out mat based match that Ian Rotten can also do. Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 When I think 'Strong Style', the last person I think of is Necro Butcher. I don't exactly think of Corp Robinson either, but more Necro.
Guest *KNK* Report post Posted November 18, 2005 How does Rocky Romero not fit the description of Strong Style but yet you'll defend Robinson.
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 Strong style = hitting hard. Corp hits hard. Romero does too. I thoguht maybe HTQ was referring to him since he sometimes does a lucha style. Necro not strong style? Did you see Joe's face after their match in June?
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 There is more to Strong Style than hitting hard. I can hit hard. Does that mean I can work Strong Style?
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 I'm just going by Prazak's definition from last year's show..."basically guys who hit really fucking hard and drop guys on their heads." It's not like this is a super-set criteria like a weight class or something. Besides, Ian knows Joe vs. Necro II will sell a lot of tapes because people have been begging to see that rematch, and would be crazy NOT to book both those guys in the tournament if he could. And I'm sure Joe vs Necro II could sell tapes. I just don't think Necro is a Strong Style worker.
Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 I'd say IWA is going by the "Strong Style = Hitting Hard" definition, regardless of how correct it is. Over the three years of the tournament the majority of participants have had basically nothing in common with Strong Style aside from punching/forearming/kicking people in the face really hard. It's little more than a 'cool' sounding name, most people don't know the difference anyway. But regardless of all that it's a good looking lineup, Joe will surely make the finals so that's three good-great matches right there, the Joe-Necro rematch seems likely to happen, and i'm certainly interested to see the results of Joe/Strong/Romero facing the likes of Necro, Corp & Tank rather than the types of opponents they'd get in ROH, TNA & PWG. King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 I think Prazak called it "American Strong Style". I think he was joking somewhat when he said it too, though I can't remember the actual quote. He certainly didn't have his 'serious voice' on when he said it. ..."basically guys who hit really fucking hard and drop guys on their heads." Trouble is, that's what most US Indy fans already think, certainly before Prazak said that. Because most fans bastardised the term Strong Style as soon as hitting people real hard in the face got popular on the indies. Ask most wrestling fans what Strong Style is and I doubt the majority would even mention Japanese wrestling. The term has been used loosely for a long time by a lot of people. And besides that, I'm not sure Ian could get 8 guys who work/try to work a 'full Strong Style' like Romero, Joe and...say, BJ Whitmer. Anyway, should be a fun enough show, so long as they put the right guys through first round. Corp and Necro would make a decent first round match but with all due respect, I wouldn't want any more of Corp than that. As long as they stick Joe and Necro together somewhere and maybe Strong/Joe II (?) or Kingston/Hero XXXVIII in, it should be good.
JustJoe2k5 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2005 How exactly would you define strong style then? I see people hitting each other hard, dropping each other on their heads, and then no-selling everything like they're a God.
