Does anyone like actually going to the games?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I've discovered that I hate going to college football and college basketball games.

First of all you have to show up 2 hours early. They don't give you any entertainment before the games so you sit there for 2 hours watching players stretch.

Then when the game starts you're surrounded by idiots booing every decision by the ref even if it was right, calling for phantom calls on the other team, and yelling for the players to make stupid decisions like "Throw it!" when the QB has nobody open at all or "Shoot it!" when the PG is covered by someone bigger than him in his face.

Then they malign the play calling if it doesn't produce a TD on the first try.

So does anyone here actually escape people like that at games or do you learn to ignore them? Because they're driving me crazy.

Why do you have to show up two hours early again?

Hell, most of the games I went to I show up an hour early and actually enjoy watching them warm up. Gives me time to learn the names of the players and see which ones will probably get a hamstring injury from being lazy on the sideline.

As for overzealous fans, you deal with it. It's section by section. Be happy you've never been to an Eagles game cause they'd piss you off.

It's just some stupid rule that OU has. Students are allowed in 2 hours before the game and if you don't get there then you won't get a good seat.

Depends on the sport. A Detroit Tiger game, if you pick the right game you can get a seat that's away from the biggest groups of people(positive product of a terrible team). Red Wings games for the most part rule, and the fans are die-hards and somewhat knowledgeable (at least in the upper sections where I get stuck). Haven't been to a college or pro football game in quite a while, but part of that is due to the fans, especially as they get hammered and if the Lions are losing.

Never been to a pro/college basketball game. I have to add that some of the most fun I have is at minor league hockey games.

I enjoy going to college basketball games but the times I've gone to U of L's football games have pretty much sucked. One was against Army and we were sitting way up at the top of the stadium on a very cold Nov. day. Another was the great FSU game where it was pouring down rain the entire time.

Hockey games are fantastic live.  Way better than watching it on TV.

I actually prefer sitting about halfway up, you can really appreciate some of the little things players do on the ice you don't see on television. It's a lot more interesting watching the play develop.

I've been to some awesome UK basketball games (also some heartwrenching UK football losses): beating Michigan State when they were #1, blowing out Florida by about 30 when they were #1, some amazing SEC games against Tennessee and others.

The greatest game ever: UK vs. UofL (can't remember what year). I went with my friend who was a UofL fan. UK ended up blowing the Cards out by about 30 and my friend left and sat in the car at halftime because I was talking so much shit.

The only three professional sports I've seen live have involved the Colts, Cubs, and Pacers, and they all lost. Baseball was my favorite live, though I find it abhorrent on tv.

Hockey games are definitely better if you go to them.

As for football games, I really hated going to Bills ones. Usually really cold, and a bunch of drunk idiots. You'll certainly run into one that will annoy you the entire time.

That one is easily solved. BECOME one of the drunk idiots. It'll warm you up, and the other drunk idiots won't bother you, because you won't even notice it.

Can't. First off, I don't enjoy getting so drunk that I have no idea where I am the rest of the day. Plus, I'm usually the one who's stuck driving.

I love going to Yankee games, and pro basketball and hockey are always fun too. College football is usually a blast, Pats games too, but up north that shit usually becomes trial by freezing your fucking balls off and requires drinking so much whiskey and beer that you just don't give a fuck.

I don't care about any of the local sports teams except that I have a passing interest in the Dolphins, maybe. Back in L.A., I did my best to try and get tickets for any good Laker games, and I've been trying for years now to get tickets to a game in Lambeau. I've been to a lot of Dodger games as well actually, moreso than any other one. Best fuckin' hotdogs I've ever had.

The SkyDome has been a lot more fan-friendly since they renovated into the Rogers Centre. Although I still hate having to go to downtown Toronto to get there.

I like the Corel Centre, stuck out in Kanata in the middle of nowhere.

Didn't the city of Ottawa had to make a special off-ramp just for the arena itself?

Besides the Rogers Centre has probably the best street meat outside of a sports centre.

I love going to a hockey or a baseball game, really good energy. NFL games are good for tailgating, but to actually watch a game is hard though. I find the lack of flow of the game really takes my interest and experiance away from the field.

My problem is that I just cannot stand the other fans sometimes. I've gone to a couple of Calgary Flames games this season and sat about middle of the second deck, so the normal seats pretty much. The bitching about the refs, phantom calls, and often complete lack of knowledge of the game from the people beside me made it almost impossible to watch the game. I guess it is inevitable when you have a hot team, but I just can't stand the people who are not real fans and don't understand the game but go and yell out stupid stuff.

On the other hand, when you have good fans around you, it can be a really great experience. Unfortunately for me, with the fan situation how it is with the Flames and how expensive tickets are, I am going to be passing on attending any games for a good long while.

Live sports are often a lot of fun, though, because you can see the intricacies and the game often comes across a lot better than on television. There have been many many many better rugby matches played than what I saw in Edmonton in June for the Churchill Cup (USA/Argentina, Canada/England, USA/Canada, Argentina/England) but because I was there live, these are some of my favorite games of all time.

So basically, my answer is yes I like going to live games but if the fans suck, it can ruin the game.

Phillies games are ok, except with drunk morons that do Eagles chants. Sixers games are kinda boring. Flyers games are fun to go to, and Eagles games are tons of fun, but you do have to possess a great tolerance of drunken morons. I've been to a couple PSU games, they're fun as all hell.

The Metrodome is no place to watch a baseball game.

The Metrodome for football is too damn load to enjoy a Vikings game.

Every single play in a Gophers football game, the PA announcer shills for some sort of product.

I went to two games last year at the Smith Center where I sat courtside. Two of the finest experiences of my sporting life. I got to watch Maryland and the Heels warm up from courtside and unfortunately I got to the Georgia Tech game about 20 minutes before tipoff - so I missed all of that.

But the feeling (especially in the risers behind the UNC hoop) when they show the team coming up of the locker room - they all gather and pray and then "Jump Around" starts playing and the entire student section goes absolutely batshit is one of the few things that gave me goosebumps and it was just one of those Holy Shit moments. I'll never forget being a part of it.

I also love going to baseball games - watching BP and chatting up players. Nothing beats it.

The place is awesome for someone like me, since I don't have to actually go into Ottawa to get there and can just go up some backroads and be there in about an hour or so.

Best live sporting experience I've had was an Alouettes game at Molson Stadium about 5 years ago. The seats suck (metal benches, but it was summer so it wasn't too bad), but the atmosphere was awesome. The Als winning big probably helped that.

The best experience I've had at a baseball game was a bunch of guys yelling 'We Want Shawn Green!' at Raul Mondesi. I need to get to a game that's actually played on grass sometime, though. Enough of that astroturf.

I'd like to also point out that all Canadian fans suck. Especially when they come across the border. It's like it gives them a license to fully show the morons they are.

I so badly want to go to an important school's college bball game.

I have to wait until the 10th for a Sun Devil game. I really want to go to the McHale Center, though.

Not all the time, but that's what's fun about it. The whole atmosphere is great, even at Utah State games when sitting near the student section.
