Thinking about finding a new job

Recommended Posts

I've been working the same job at this movie theater for 3 and a half years now, and have been a manager there for a year now. Up until late, the job was fun, easy, fast money, where you can basically just hang out and have fun with your friends. In March of last year our particular theater was bought out by a giant theater conglomerate, and what was once a small regionally owned theater just became another cog in this nation wide machine. At first it wasn't so bad, same shit, just more bosses. After a few months with this new company, most of the previous managers whom I had become friendly with since working there left the theater, mostly out of displeasure for the new corporation and it's policies, which I never really had a problem with. Lately though, I don't know what it is, but this job has started to suck the spirit right out of me. I used to enjoy going to work and working, but now I've come to realize that it fails to matter how hard or how little work I do, as long as I don't dip down past the bare minimum, no one will say anything, and I definitly won't get fired as long as I'm not blatently stealing shit. I only make 1.50 more then minimum wage, with absolutly no raise anywhere on the horizon it seems, yet I do the work of three people. It's not just me either, there are guys I work with that have been there for over a year now and are still at just minimum wage despite working harder then I do. It's also the nonsense and the beuracracy that come from both the corporate office, and my boss, who is really just a tool of the company, that's been wearing on me. They want long lines and a clean theater, but they want payroll as low as it possibly can. They want the auditriums spotless, but don't want customers to have to stand around too long. They get inordinate sums of money in advertising revenue, despite the fact that all market research everywhere has shown that customers despise advertising in any form when they go to the movies. It's all just a bunch of nonsense, and it's been slowly eating away at me I guess, and I just haven't noticed.

So now I'm giving at least a little more serious thought to the idea of seeing what other job oppertunities are out there, preferably not without a demotion or pay cut. The only thing really holding me back is the fact that I don't want to leave all my friends at work behind, and quite simply, my job may not pay well, but it doesn't actually require a lot of effort either, so I dunno. They're building a new Target in the area, maybe I can get a managment spot over there? Other then that, I'm probobly looking at another 4-5 months before being taken really seriously by any company, since they're only hiring for that nosnense seasonal period where they'll lay you off in January. Maybe I should just stick with what's working right now, finish college, get a few more years of managment experience under my belt, so that way I'll have a buisness degree and that experience that would probobly get me a managment position just about anywhere I want? Any advice?

If you think your talents are worth more, then get another job. That's why we live in a free-market economy.

Having worked at a theater for a year-and-a-half while in college, I do feel for you though regarding how management wants auditoriums spotless after a movie, but don't want to wait more than 30 seconds for you to pick up half-eaten bags of popcorm and clean up pop spills.

The only "X" factor in this all for me is how does this job accomodate your schooling in regards to hours/etc. If you get another job at a retail place, you may experience a change in hours/workload/etc., which may affect your performance in school. Also, how much more schooling do you need to graduate?...

Target will pay you much fucking better than that shit. I made about the same as you when i was a manager at a fast food taco place. I don't know if working in a theater sucks ass or not, but there are way better paying jobs out there that a person could easily get with very little experience.

I'm sure it depends on where you live, but a decent part time job for someone in school is a cleaning position. You vacuum, pick up the trash in offices/cubicles and take it out. You might have to clean off some tables, sweep & mop a cafeteria floor or a main entrance as well. It's easy work for 3 - 5 hours at night. Weekends off in most places. I did this my senior year in high school.

The job usually pays a dollar or two more then minimum wage, plus it's done in the evening/night when the places are 95% empty.

I'd say try to find a warehouse job, but you're looking for something part-time that helps you through school.

Go with Fear Havoc's idea and do some custodial work for a company.

Look for other opportunities if you want, but you're still in a pretty good position... an easy job, with likely flexible enough hours to accomodate your school needs. Those aren't that easy to find anymore, depending on where you live.

And with Target, you're going to feel the same way

if you're not in school, get yourself in at ground level of a warehouse/distribution center/manufacturing plant (I say all 3 because experience with one always carries over to another)...if you show that you work hard, pay attention to detail, never late or absent, show them you have potential, etc., you'll go from $7 an hour to somewhere in the teens within 2 years...I gaurantee this...

when I was 19, I started at the bottom floor in a print shop...within a year I went from 7 to 11 an hour...within 2 years I was a supervisor making 36,000 a year (not bad for 21 and no schooling at the time)...
