Robert 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2005 Bringing Bates in was Sherman and Thompson both deciding on it. Keep Bates, he's been the best coordinator since Shermur (DC during the SB run.) No on Mooch, and I'm sick and tired of hearing that we should hire a Holmgren staff member to coach after Sherman. Folks, the Super Bowl run is over and let the ice age begin. Sherman may or may not be in GB after the year. If Favre leaves, he leaves and we get a new coach.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2005 Does anyone disagree that ESPN's reaction would of been different if "Mooch" wasn't so buddy-buddy with the media?
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted November 29, 2005 I don't know, I think it's been universally agreed on that Millen's the problem in Detroit, not Mariucci. I mean, the guy was a winner in San Francisco, and even went through a very quick rebuilding phase there and was turning the franchise around before the York/DeBartolo and T.O. fiascos got him out prematurely. Bringing Bates in was Sherman and Thompson both deciding on it. No, bringing Bates in was entirely Sherman's decision. Thompson either hadn't been hired yet as GM or he had just started by the time Bates came in as D.C.. There's a good chance Favre won't leave if Mariucci comes in to coach seeing as how Mooch was Favre's QB coach during his MVP years and would run a similar system (which is actually what Favre was talking about in terms of possibly retiring if Sherman left- adjusting to a new system with different terminology and all that, which wouldn't necessarily be the case if Mooch replaced Sherman). Another thing to consider is the players don't get along with Sherman, and even some of Sherm's assistants don't really like the guy too much personally, though they can work with him professionally. Darren Sharper alluded to this in the offseason, and the old running backs coach (I believe it was Johnny Roland?) also had a spat with Mike and quit over it. This may be a reason big free agents can be a bit reluctant to sign with Green Bay as well.
Robert 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2005 Thompson was put in on Jan. 14, 20045 and Bates was hired on Jan. 28th, 2005. It was Sherman's idea, but Thompson and Bob Harlan both approved it. I wasn't impressed with Moocher in San Fran mostly due to the fact that he didn't change the gameplan at all. When he tried to do a new offense with Detriot, it failed. It was also due to a lack of talent, and that he's not a good motivator. There have only been two good head coaches that came from the Walrus's staff. Andy Reid and Jon Gruden have all done good, but the other's have failed as a coach. The 49er's were a playoff team when Mooch came, so it wasn't some big Lombardi-ish revival. Detriot needed playoffs and wins, but Moocher couldn't do that with a lead. Mooch will end up in college at USC when Pete Caroll tries to make his grand return to the NFL. We can't sign free agents because of the big ass paychecks that Sherman gave to guys like KGB, Hunt, and various other palyers who didn't deserve it.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted November 29, 2005 Hunt was cut during training camp, and there were players the Packers were able to afford but weren't able to lure over other teams. Mooch took over a playoff team yes, but it was one in decline, and then there was their brief 1-2 year rebuilding phase, and he made stars out of Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens. I'd say that was pretty impressive, and the Lions lack of success had more to do with first-round busts and a lack of defense than anything else. If anything, he really should've gotten at least till the end of the season until he was fired, this was really something of a surprise considering that Dom Capers and Mike Sherman are still coaching. Robert 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2005 Good point about him being fired at the end. Hunt was given a very large contract after a break-out year, and we still had the salaries that we gave to Hardy Nickerson, KGB, and numerous others. We didn't have enough to re-sign Rivera and Wahle, and we brought in mid-level free agents. By the time that we cut Hunt, there were few great free agents, and they were out of our price range. Boulware was asking for alot more than we had, and Ty Law would've killed us. Next year, if Favre leaves we'll have a good amount of money in free agency. We'll already have alot at the end of the year, so we can sign some bigger stars to fill holes (Guard, Nose Tackle, Linebacker, Defensive Backs.) Mooch will probably either go back to college or the Rams.
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2005 What openings are there (or will be) on the college scene for Mariucci? I see him doing tv work for a year before jumping back into coaching.
Robert 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2005 Well, if Pete Caroll leaves for the NFL to coach Leinart (wherever he goes) Mooch could coach at USC. He could do TV because heis very media friendly.
lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2005 why would Pete Carroll go back to the NFL a place where its been proven that he is a mediocre at best coach. The guy isn't cut out for the pro game, but his rah rah attitude is perfect for motivating 19yr old kids
Robert 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2005 Well, most owner's don't care if he was medicore in the past. They see a guy who has produced a two Heisman Tropy winning QB's, national titles, and a 30 game win streak. To owners like Tom Benson, they see big money and the possibility to move to LA where he is a god. If they get Leinart, that's all the perfect justification to move them. Hiring Pete Caroll gets you a ton of money, and you got a guy who could con USC alumni into coming here. Wherever Pete would go, shallow fans and owners who just look at the acolades will hire him right away. Wherever Leinart will go, Caroll will follow.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2005 I could possibly see Michigan State canning John L. Smith and trying to make a run at Mooch. Didn't they try to get him in 2002 when they fired Bobby Williams and Mooch was out on the market?
