Gary Barnett out at Colorado

Gary Barnett has stepped down as head coach of the Colorado football team.

"Colorado decided they wanted to change coaches," Barnett's attorney John Rodman told ESPN's Joe Schad on Thursday. "[barnett] has agreed to step down as coach. We're pleased about the terms of the settlement, but we're disappointed we had to part ways."

Rodman confirmed that Barnett will receive a $3 million settlement from the university. Barnett was scheduled to be paid $1,187,750 next season and would have been owed $1.6 million of a $2 million longevity bonus.

The school has called a news conference for 8:30 p.m. ET, and sources had told both Schad and Pat Forde of ESPN.com that Barnett's ouster would be announced at that news conference. The university confirmed that Barnett will attend the news conference.

"It's over," a friend of Barnett's told Schad Thursday. "He has not survived. And it wasn't the off-field allegations that got him. It was 70-3 [score against Texas]. It was what happened in the last three games. He all but had his new contract."

The Colorado Board of Regents met Thursday, but Barnett's future wasn't discussed at the meeting, ESPN's George Smith reported.

The university regents declined to comment about Barnett after the 3½-hour executive session Thursday.

"I think that's still in the hands of the chancellor and the athletic director," Colorado president Hank Brown said.

Barnett and the school had been discussing a contract extension for several weeks, and it was believed to be a foregone conclusion before the season turned south.

CU finished on a three-game losing streak, including losses to Nebraska and Texas by the combined score of 100-6.

"The coaches have worked hard and the players have been great. The kids just ran out of juice. My whole extension has been a big issue. I think they felt some pressure surrounding that," Barnett told ESPN.com.

Despite a torrent of negative publicity, a suspension from the school and widespread speculation that he would be fired 18 months ago after a controversy erupted surrounding Colorado's recruiting practices, Barnett has taken Colorado to consecutive Big 12 North Division titles.

The president, chancellor and athletic director all stepped down in the aftermath of the scandal, which resulted in an investigation that concluded drugs, alcohol and sex were used to entice recruits to the Boulder campus, though none of practices were sanctioned by university officials.

"Personally, I'm fine. I hold my head very, very high. Through all the crap we've gone through, we've won two division championships. The kids have gotten those championship rings, and they can't take those away."

After Saturday's 70-3 loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game, Bohn told the Boulder Daily Camera, "We all have to look at everything and see what it's going to take to get things going in the right direction. That's what's on everyone's mind right now."

Barnett's take on the loss to Texas: "A lot of people have lost pretty bad to Texas this year."

The news conference was called hours after university officials confirmed they had received an unsigned letter accusing Barnett of improper conduct.

The Rocky Mountain News, which first reported the letter, said the letter accuses Barnett of attempting to influence sworn testimony by his subordinates during the football program's recent recruiting scandal. The letter also claims football players were tipped off in advance of supposedly random drug tests, the newspaper said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

About time. He hasn't deserved to be a head coach for awhile now.

What's funny as hell about this was last year when he was voted Big 12 coach of the year and I read somewhere they talked about his overcoming adversity. Ironic considering it was his fault the adversity took place to start with.

That whole program needs to be overhauled, and the Big XII North is going to suck even worse for the next couple of years at this rate. Colorado was where they had the female player once, right? Even that sort of great story turned into a huge mess. Has there been an ounce of good national press about Colorado in the last 2-3 years at all?

G. Barnett, you have been removed from your position as head coach of Colorado.

Previous Program Prestige: ****

Current Program Presitge: **

Yeah Kotz he had the girl kicker and the famous quote that was something along the lines of "Katie was a girl. Not only was Katie a girl, she was terrible."

Nice to know that players can always look to their coach for support when they're being harassed by their fellow players.

On a little side tangent, does it feel weird to have pictures of guys you go to school with in your avatar? I only ask because you're the one guy here who falls under that, and it'd be weird if I were a player for a school's team and knew people I was walking past each day had a picture of me accompanying each post of theirs on messageboards.

It's funny ...

Have a rape scandal, keep your job.

Have a sexual harrasment scandal, keep your job.

Have sex-for-athletes scandal, keep your job.

Have player-sends-racist-emails scandal, keep your job.

Lose 100-6 in two games, and you're fired.

Shows what Boulder keeps as a priority.

BTW, am I the only one that would soooo tag Katie Hnida?

It's not like he could actually figure out who I am from this message board.

And on top of that I'm sure he deals with far worse. You should see some of the facebook groups made in dedication of him.

And here's another thing about AD. He's knowns as a player around here. He gets laid constantly(i'm sure any of us in his position would and I'm sure players like Bush and Young get a lot of ass too) and there are a ton of hot girls wondering around at OU. But I've met a couple of girls that he's tagged and they are dog ugly. It just makes me wonder "Will he sleep with any female that looks at him?" Beware Wilt Chamberlain. College football players are storming for your record.

Trust me, if they could find a way to recruit players from prison with a nasty habit of raping and murdering their female population but who could rush for 1,600 yards in a season then Colorado would do it. They are like "The Program" come to life, only much dumber and no Heisman trophy candiate. That and if Lattimer played at Colorado, they'd inject him with more roids.

no, several Colardo football players feel the same way, niskie!

I'd at least wait for consent, Lushus.

Unlike the CU players.

Sure, it was a decade ago, but it was pretty much the same back then too.

I was amazed that Gary Barnett kept his job as long as he did. I mean hell, I'm bewildered as to how Rich Brooks still has a job at UK but his biggest crime is taking over a probation riddled program and having shitty teams. Gary Barnett? This guy should have been fired, then rehired, and then fired again just to make sure he got the point. Didn't the university president step down, the AD step down too, and yet somehow this ass kept his job?

That crook Hal Mumme got a job with New Mexico State. It might take Barnett a few years to get a job, and it will likely be with a small conference school, but he will coach again.

Nah. If he can rush like that then Nebraska would snatch him up.
