NFL Week XVII

Recommended Posts

Ok here are the games and predictions for the final week of the reg. season.

Saturday:

Denver at San Diego. Denver has things wrapped up as much as possible, SD's playing everyone. Thus the Chargers will win by 10 or so.

NY Giants at Oakland. Giants have no excuse not to win this against the crappy Raiders, and I don't care if Kerry Collins wants revenge. Giants by 14.

Sunday:

Arizona at Indianapolis. Colts need to get well here. Play the starters the first half and squash the Cardinals, then put in Sorgi and Co. and relax. Colts by 10.

Baltimore at Cleveland. Two jobbers. The Ravens played well this past week, the Browns got waxed 41-0, so of course I'll take the Browns here by about 6.

Carolina at Atlanta. Very interesting game. Falcons are eliminated but will they just fold the tent or will they do what the Saints did and eliminate the Panthers? I think they will pull this one off in a thrilling game. Falcons by 3, putting the Panthers out.

Cincinnati vs. Kansas City. Chiefs DO still have some life left, so they'll be ready here. Bengals had a hideous loss last week and I think they'll lose here too by about 10, thus knocking them to the 4 seed.

Detroit vs. Pittsburgh. The no brainer of the week. The pitiful Lions against the now mighty Men of Steel. Steelers in an absolute assbeating by 20+, they're in the playoffs.

Miami vs. New England. One thing I like about Belichick is that he doesn't do this wuss crap of resting the starters. Of course when guys like Tedy Bruschi get hurt maybe he should. Regardless, the Pats should fend off a tough effort from the resurgent Dolphins (by about 7) and finish 11-5. Pats get the #3 seed.

New Orleans at Tampa Bay. The 2nd no brainer as the sad sack Saints likely get their asses kicked by the Bucs, who need this to win the division and make the playoffs. Tampa by 14.

Seattle vs. Green Bay. Mike Holmgren will just be resting guys here, so the Pack wins by 9 or so. Seattle still has homefield at 13-3.

Buffalo vs. NY Jets. Buffalo had a big win last week so how do they finish the year? By losing on the road to the Jets. NY by 4.

Houston vs. San Francisco. The so called Reggie Bush Bowl. Niners have won a couple of baffling games, so I'll take them here by 7.

Tennessee vs. Jacksonville. I'm not sure if the Jags are resting people, but they might well since they are the #5 seed and can go no higher. If so, Titans by 7. I predicted weeks ago that the Jags would finish about 11-5.

Chicago vs. Minnesota. Bears are locked in as the 2 seed, but will they rest guys? It IS a division rival after all. Vikings are done anyway, so this will be the ho hum hangover game of the day. Bears by 6, something like 16-10.

Washington vs. Philadelphia. Skins are on a roll, and I don't care if Brunell is out. Like Mike McMahon is THAT much better than Patrick Ramsey? Skins by 7 to make the playoffs.

St. Louis vs. Dallas. People seem to think the Cowboys are done, but all they have to do is beat the mediocre Rams and get a Carolina/Washington loss and they are in. Cowboys by 10.

This is a pretty craptastic week of football.

Btw, I've watched McMahon the last several weeks, and he is not better than any quarterback playing this week. The guy had a nice little run in Detroit, but is absolutely terrible now. I wish the Eagles would give Andy Hall a shot this week to see if he has anything.

Lions-Steelers is at -14 right now, so if you want to make money bet on this.

Weird week for gambling with all the teams resting guys. Green Bay is favored by 3 right now against Seattle.

14 is kind of a large line though. I mean whose to say Cowher won't take some guys out in the 4th if they are up like 28-7, then Harrington gets a late TD, then it's a 28-14 push.

And yeah, it's a bleh week if you wanna bet on games, but there are still a few out there to try. I might go with KC over Cincy or ATL over Carolina in a mild upset.

This is a pretty craptastic week of football.

Week 17 usually is, with very few exceptions. I'd say the best games are between Weeks 4-8, when everyone is still playing their ass off in division and playoff races.

Well, the Texans have put Gary Walker and Domanick Davis on IR, so they're gone. Plus, Jonathan Wells sat out today with a thigh bruise. BUT WAIT! The Niners have countered by IR'ing Kevan Barlow and, well, starting Alex Smith.

The prospect of having a Frank Gore vs. Vernand Morency starting tailback battle anywhere in the NFL distresses me. They're not bad players, but come on.

I'm predicting a 2-0 Niners win when a bad snap goes over Texans punter Chad Stanley's head 30 yards through the end zone. Jerome Mathis will break into the clear on a punt return in the final minute, but will be tackled by his teammates on the Niners 3 yard line. Featuring 12 sacks by the Niners defense and 6 INTs by the Texans defense, the over/under on combined total offense will be in the neighborhood of 220 yards.

Coughlin is finally starting 2nd round draft pick Corey Webster over Curtis DeLoach. Thank god. Deloach sucks in one on one coverage, and has six pass interference penalties against him in the last 5 weeks. But why even worry about our secondary when we've got Nick Griesen, Greg Lewis (who we released last year), and Roman Phifer (hasn't played since last year) starting at the line backer positions this week.

Its also supposed to rain a shitload Saturday night, and even with Jordan out, were still going to get run over on the ground.

Someone explain to me how they can call intentional grounding on Eli when the reason he threw the ball away was BECAUSE the Raiders were offside?!? What is he supposed to do, let them sack him and get killed?

Boy, did Eli get lucky on that near-sack. His leg would've snapped in half if that Raider went down with him instead of brushing off after the hit.

Can there be a more obvious penalty to see on that hands to the face by the O lineman on Straham? Fucking refs.

Surprised no one mentioned much on the Denver/SD game. What a debacle for the Chargers that one was. All I heard from Shottenheimer this week was "We're playing everyone, we wanna get to 10-6!" Not only did they not win but Drew Brees left with a dislocated right shoulder. Anyone care to explain why ol Marty has a job? He took a team that was AFC title game caliber and went 9-7.

PLEASE tell me that someone else is watching this ESPN segment on Jerry Rice post-retirement.

This is hilarious.

I found it funny...the first time they aired it, on Countdown about a month or so ago..

Patriots Inactives for today

CB Asante Samuel

CB/S Artrell Hawkins

RB Corey Dillon

LB Tedy Bruschi

WR Bethel Johnson

TE Daniel Graham

DL Jarvis Green

Doug Flutie -- 3rd quarterback

You can tell the team is clearly gearing up for the playoffs here.

The Packers and Jets are both winning. If they do end up winning their games then they can both basically forget about Reggie Bush.

Idiots. Playing for pride never gets you anywhere.

If Pitt goes into the playoffs with a healthy Duce Staley, Bettis, and Parker then I can see them steamrolling the Cinci defense(especially after watching what Larry Johnson has done to them today). That would send Pitt into Indi with the winner of NE/Jax headed to Denver.
