Eric Staal is the center for the Hurricanes. Marc is his younger brother and is a defenseman.

Marc Staal has yet to play an NHL game, he's in the Rangers system. Eric Staal is not a rookie either.

Just got back from the Ducks State of the Franchise meeting. Here's the important stuff...

The Ducks are losing $15 million this season.

Brian Burke doesn't want to move any players because he has to.

A couple of the favorites on the Ducks may not be back if they ask for too much money.

I asked if Guy Hebert's number would be retired. BB said "NO" and my body started to go into shock. I guess I wasn't expecting that. He said putting jersy numbers of likable players cheapen it. I wasn't able to respond but we don't have any numbers up there in the first place and Ray Borque played two seasons in Colorado and his number is hanging in the Pepsi Center.

At the end of the Q&A, we got Mighty Ducks hats.

Nothing was mentioned about the new name or colors except that they are coming. I guess the team needs to sell at least $15 million worth of new merchandise.

Guy Hebert does not deserve his jersey retired, Burke is absolutely right.

Neither does Borque for that matter. My roomate is an Avs fan and he HATES Borque.

It's so hard for teams to make money in the NHL. It would shock you to see how many teams actually do, the number's pretty small.

Speaking of number retirements, Ron Francis had his number retired last night in Carolina. Ceremony was perfect with he and his kids at the pregame skate, all skating around wearing #10 Francis jerseys with the C on it. So well done, his speech was pretty cool too.

Tsn.ca said that its only part of a big trade so I wonder who is going back to St.louis. Carolina is a little more dangerous now but they have to take on his huge 5.7 million contract.

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Doug Weight and 27-year-old Finnish forward Erkki Rajamaki from the St. Louis Blues.

In exchange, Carolina gave to the Blues three draft picks and three players. The package includes:

- Carolina's first-round pick in 2006.

- Toronto's fourth-round pick in 2006, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.

- Chicago's fourth-round pick in 2007, previously acquired by the Hurricanes.

- Tough guy forward Jesse Boulerice, a 27-year-old eighth-year pro

- Forward Mike Zigomanis, a 25-year-old fifth-year pro

- Magnus Kahnberg, 25, an unsigned Carolina draftee from Sweden who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1

Weight is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. At this point in time, Weight is considered by both the Hurricanes and himself to be a "rental" for the balance of this season.

Although the Weight trade is not related to the ongoing ownership issues with the Blues, sources tell TSN it finally looks as though the franchise will be sold to a group headed by former New York Ranger executive Dave Checketts, who has been in on-again, off-again negotiations to buy the team for months now.

Sources say the deal was supposed to be finalized over the weekend, but that did not happen. Whether it's just a minor delay or yet another snag that could cause problems remains to be seen, but the sense is that Checketts' group will be able to close the deal to purchase the franchise

Weight, 35, is the Blues' leading scorer with 44 points in 47 games this season. A productive offensive centre throughout his career, Weight will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end. He's earning $5.7-million this year.

In 960 career games with the Blues, Oilers and Rangers, Weight has 235 goals and 637 assists for 872 points, adding 55 points in 68 career playoff games.

Damn! Carolina is outright scary. Looks like the Sens won't cruise their way to the Cup now.

Carolina defence is still rather questionable though.

They are still #1 in NHL, no matter how weak their defense is. Adding Weight will only help.

Carolina will be in the cup finals, the East IMO is very weak.

I'd still take Ottawa, although the Weight deal is a very good trade for them (I think they gave up an awful lot for a rental player). Ottawa's defense is deeper and with a healthy Hasek, I'd take them over anyone in the NHL.

I'd take Ottawa, but don't rule out the Flyers either. If they can get healthy (minus Primeau, he's toast) they'll have a ton of depth since the Phantoms have been up all year.

Either way, I don't see the East being that weak with at least three legitimate teams that can come out.

The Flyers are a very good team, but their goaltending leaves a lot to be desired. Until Esche can prove himself, I wouldn't trust him. Niittimaki is a good player, but...Ottawa and Carolina have better goaltending.

They would certainly be the weakest of the three, but Nitty has shown in IMO he can at least hold his own. He has struggled lately, but that has been one part exhaustion (stretch with 17 straight starts) and 99 parts noone playing in front of him (or Esche) for the past two weeks. Brodeur and Roy wrapped up into one would not have helped over the past two weeks, when the whole team has had no energy.

My biggest concern with him is eased by there being no shootouts in the playoffs. Nitty has been god awful in those.

While I agree that Carolina overpaid for a rental player, I think that even they realize that this year is as likely to be a one-year wonder as it is to be the beginning of a Colorado/Detroit type of run of excellence. It'd be better to overpay for Weight now than to do nothing and potentially bottom out again and have to wonder what could have been.

I'll say one good thing about the lock-out and the ensuing fall-out ... there are so many good teams that have a VERY legit chance at the Cup this year ... this'll be one of the better post-seasons in recent years, if all the teams stay healthy and play as they have been.

I don't know about Carolina being a 1 year wonder, they got alot of young players and Eric Staal(got it right this time) is the truth. That kid is fucking tough and can down right score.

Gerber is a pretty good goalie also.

See, I don't necessarily think that they're a one year wonder.

I just don't think that I'm ready to put them in the Ottawa/Philly/Detroit/Colorado "Always a Very Good Team" category yet.

Teams like Carolina and Nashville have to do it for more than half-a-season for me to drink the kool-aid.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. That's the guy that I wanted the Kings to get. I still think Ottawa's the team to beat unless they play New Jersey in the playoffs, I think that's the most dangerous team out East. No one's thinking about them, but they're on fire. Ottawa plays the Devils this week, so we'll get a little look at that potential matchup.

How would you have felt about the Kings giving up that much for him, though, Kot909?

There'll be other players available closer to the deadline, and ones that should be able to come at a more reasonable price. If/when the Bruins bottom out, I'm sure the Kings could pick up Murray (again) or Samsonov.

Actually, the big rumor around here is Samsonov & Raycroft to Chicago for Arnason & Bell. (which I can't see Chicago doing at all). So maybe Sammy won't be available for LA. But Murray would love to be back West. If the B's fall apart, I wouldn't be surprised to see Muzz back in LA.

And, on an unrelated note, why are there so many double/triple postings lately? The board seems to be fucking up daily.

I wouldn't have wanted the Kings to have given up that much for Weight, so it's good that they didn't. There was a rumor in the LA Times about the Kings picking up Dean McAmmond and Eric Weinrich, and everyone seems to think that DT floated it around to gauge fan response. There's also been rumors about Palffy coming back to LA next year and the Kings trying to make a move for Samsonov as well. Pavol Demitra was on the pregame show last week and he was asked about Palffy coming back to LA, and he laughed, winked at the camera and said we'll see, so I think that's probably going to happen.

Most people here want Olli Jokinen to come back or they want a Willie Mitchell or Pavol Kubina type guy. They seem to think that Tkachuk's an option, especially after the season ticket holder's breakfast yesterday.

On another note, if the Leafs don't beat Florida tonight, they had better beat Washington on Friday. If they don't, they'll never break their losing streak.

IIRC, Carolina has made Ottawa their bitches this season.

Now I don't want to get off as a Hurricanes fan(I'm a Flames fan), but I think this team is the team to beat in the NHL, atleast in the East. They just are not getting the respect they deverse.

East IMO, is just weak as a whole, sure they got Ottawa, Philly, and Carolina. And couple of pretty good teams in Buffalo and NYR, but in total they fucking suck.

In the West there is alot of good teams who are above .500 that don't even have a playoff spot(San Jose, Minnesota, Phoenix, Anaheim) that would make the playoffs no problem in the East.

Don't sleep on the Devils. Elias turned them from a way out of the playoffs team to a contender instantly. I wouldn't want to run into a hot Brodeur at any time.

As far as I can tell this hasn't been posted yet, but for Penguins fans reading this board who are not aware, there will be two Save the Pens rallies over the next few weeks. The first one will be held at the Mellon Arena on this Saturday, February 4, starting at 12noon. A second one will be held in Mount Washington on February 9, outside of whatever restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for Ed Rendell. That one will last from 5pm-9pm.

Carolina is 2-2 against Ottawa this season.

10-24: 3-2 Carolina

11-15: 2-1 Carolina

11-22: 5-3 Ottawa

12-28: 6-2 Ottawa

Now I don't want to get off as a Hurricanes fan(I'm a Flames fan), but I think this team is the team to beat in the NHL, atleast in the East. They just are not getting the respect they deverse.

I agree that they're not getting the proper respect. But to completely discount Ottawa and Philly in the east is kind of stupid and not giving them the respect they THEY deserve. Buffalo is more dangerous than people think though.

In the West there is alot of good teams who are above .500 that don't even have a playoff spot(San Jose, Minnesota, Phoenix, Anaheim) that would make the playoffs no problem in the East.

I wouldn't say a lot...Anaheim, Phoenix and Minnesota are low seed teams in the East. That's it. That's no worse than it's ever been.
