Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2006 Just got back from the Ducks State of the Franchise meeting. Here's the important stuff... The Ducks are losing $15 million this season. Brian Burke doesn't want to move any players because he has to. A couple of the favorites on the Ducks may not be back if they ask for too much money. I asked if Guy Hebert's number would be retired. BB said "NO" and my body started to go into shock. I guess I wasn't expecting that. He said putting jersy numbers of likable players cheapen it. I wasn't able to respond but we don't have any numbers up there in the first place and Ray Borque played two seasons in Colorado and his number is hanging in the Pepsi Center. At the end of the Q&A, we got Mighty Ducks hats. Nothing was mentioned about the new name or colors except that they are coming. Speaking of number retirements, Ron Francis had his number retired last night in Carolina. Ceremony was perfect with he and his kids at the pregame skate, all skating around wearing #10 Francis jerseys with the C on it. So well done, his speech was pretty cool too. If they can get healthy (minus Primeau, he's toast) they'll have a ton of depth since the Phantoms have been up all year. He has struggled lately, but that has been one part exhaustion (stretch with 17 straight starts) and 99 parts noone playing in front of him (or Esche) for the past two weeks. Brodeur and Roy wrapped up into one would not have helped over the past two weeks, when the whole team has had no energy. While I agree that Carolina overpaid for a rental player, I think that even they realize that this year is as likely to be a one-year wonder as it is to be the beginning of a Colorado/Detroit type of run of excellence. It'd be better to overpay for Weight now than to do nothing and potentially bottom out again and have to wonder what could have been. I'll say one good thing about the lock-out and the ensuing fall-out ... there are so many good teams that have a VERY legit chance at the Cup this year ... this'll be one of the better post-seasons in recent years, if all the teams stay healthy and play as they have been. I just don't think that I'm ready to put them in the Ottawa/Philly/Detroit/Colorado "Always a Very Good Team" category yet. I still think Ottawa's the team to beat unless they play New Jersey in the playoffs, I think that's the most dangerous team out East. No one's thinking about them, but they're on fire. There'll be other players available closer to the deadline, and ones that should be able to come at a more reasonable price. If/when the Bruins bottom out, I'm sure the Kings could pick up Murray (again) or Samsonov. Actually, the big rumor around here is Samsonov & Raycroft to Chicago for Arnason & Bell. (which I can't see Chicago doing at all). So maybe Sammy won't be available for LA. But Murray would love to be back West. If the B's fall apart, I wouldn't be surprised to see Muzz back in LA. There was a rumor in the LA Times about the Kings picking up Dean McAmmond and Eric Weinrich, and everyone seems to think that DT floated it around to gauge fan response. There's also been rumors about Palffy coming back to LA next year and the Kings trying to make a move for Samsonov as well. Pavol Demitra was on the pregame show last week and he was asked about Palffy coming back to LA, and he laughed, winked at the camera and said we'll see, so I think that's probably going to happen. Most people here want Olli Jokinen to come back or they want a Willie Mitchell or Pavol Kubina type guy. They seem to think that Tkachuk's an option, especially after the season ticket holder's breakfast yesterday. On another note, if the Leafs don't beat Florida tonight, they had better beat Washington on Friday. If they don't, they'll never break their losing streak. Now I don't want to get off as a Hurricanes fan(I'm a Flames fan), but I think this team is the team to beat in the NHL, atleast in the East. They just are not getting the respect they deverse. East IMO, is just weak as a whole, sure they got Ottawa, Philly, and Carolina. And couple of pretty good teams in Buffalo and NYR, but in total they fucking suck. In the West there is alot of good teams who are above .500 that don't even have a playoff spot(San Jose, Minnesota, Phoenix, Anaheim) that would make the playoffs no problem in the East.
