College Hoops 2/14/06 - 2/26/06

Recommended Posts

West Virginia is rapidly turning into the decent Big East team that all the Big East teams needing a quality win beat.

Yeah, they're quickly becoming the Abyss of the Big East.

The Pac-10 is a fucking piece of shit, more so then the SEC this year, which is a pretty tall order. USC is a nice slab of garbage and UCLA should've eaten them. And to think I was buying into the team being a spoiler for the Final Four. Now, I see them losing to a Creightion in the second round.

Texas losing on Sunday was not only extremely funny, it helped Memphis into a 1 seed that they deserve because of their ballsy OOC Schedule.

Right now here are my 1 seeds.

Duke

Villanova

UConn

Memphis

UCLA is still my sleeper team. They're annoying to watch... but if Farmar stops playing like a dope making tons of turnovers, and they ever get fully healthy... they can be scary. At their best, I think Afflalo-Farmar can be the best guard combo in the nation. Too bad they won't get Shipp back, though.

West Va, is still my sleeper team, they can shoot the three to the point where they are lights out on certain nights, and they won't run into any of the Big East teams until the later rounds, I see them getting to the sweet 16 at worst

UVA just took out BC in a romp. I didn't think we had a chance in hell, even at home with the way BC's been lighting up opponents on the road lately, but they got suckered into the zone and couldn't stop the guards. I can't believe that UVA is probably going to put up at least 8 ACC wins this season.

The ACC bubble is interesting. At this point, I think it's going to take an impressive tournament showing to get any of the bubble teams in, unless one of them can actually get hot and stay hot, which none have been able to do all year.

They'll be everyone's sleeper come tournament time. I think they'll get to the Sweet 16.

They're not my sleeper team. I see them losing a 6/11 game in the first round to someone like Northern Iowa.

Again, my sleeper team comes out of Foggy Bottom which is reachable on the Orange and Blue Lines on the DC Metro. Which is the George Washington Colonials. The fun part of it all is that they're going to get a lower seed than they deserve because of their debacle of an OOC schedule. (Remember people, if you want on the 1-2 lines and you're not in a Big 6 Conference, you gotta play a top 100 OOC schedule. Not a Top 400 one.)

GW's seeding will be interesting. St. Joe's got a #1 seed, and they didn't have the tough OOC road game like GW had in their loss at NC State. Although, St. Joe's RPI was probably higher... mostly because the A-10 had a better rep then.

I think if GW wins out, they deserve the top #2 seed, at worst. #1 seed if Memphis loses another game... or Duke/UConn/Nova loses a few at the end.

St. Joes actually had a very high RPI in the top 5 though and had beaten teams like Gonzaga. GW right now has a fairly crappy RPI considering their record, something like 33 I think. When in doubt I'd average out the AP ranking and the RPI to find their seed, which would be something like a 4 or 5 seed.

About Northern Iowa, they are better than an 11 seed. RPI of 23, national rankings around 24 or 25. They would be more likely to be the 6 seed on the end of that 6/11 upset.

WKU might well end up as an 11, but I wonder...if they are upset in the Sun Belt tourney could they still get an at large bid?

RPI has nothing to do with "rep". It's record, opponents' record, and opponents' opponents' record. That's it. St. Joes at least had a couple decent wins, and some real talent. The only Top 30 team that GW's faced is NC State and they lost that game by 21 points. Their schedule is ranked 247th out of 334 teams. They really don't deserve to be higher than a 3 seed at this point.

What I remember most about St. Joe's 2 years ago was Billy Packer throwing a shitfit on the Selection Show over them getting a #1 seed, followed by Phil Martelli calling him an asshole on live television, which was the greatest thing ever.

I know that. I just used poor wording. :P I meant the A-10 was a better conference then. I also see GW falling to a 3... the committee will likely drop them 1 seeding because of their OOC.

And the RPI is fallible. Arizona is in the Top 20... and all the beloved MVC teams are rated higher than GW. That's bull.

Sagarin has GW at 13. Which is better. But, I still don't think they should behind teams like Pittsburgh, who notoriously play cupcake SOS... and shouldn't have the handicap of losing a handful of conference games, just because it is a tough conference... where GW goes undefeated.

I think too much stock is put into SOS. GW faced a lot of the biggest cupcakes in D-1... but, I think it's silly that a team like Duke will be rated higher because they beat teams like Davidson and Valpo at home, and GW beats Norfolk St. and MD-ES. They're just squash games with no purpose.

And I think WKU is deserving of at least at-large consideration, but they won't get one.

Saint Joes also had a very distinctive OOC number for the 03-04 season

1

That's right, Saint Joesph's had the best OOC schedule (by the numbers, at least) for that particular season. That's signifcant when you go 27 - 1 into the tournament. Had they won out and gone 30 - 0, then they would have an amazing case to be THE top #1 Seed for that year. There really wasn't any way or anyone else to take St. Joes 1 seed, escpecially after Pitt lost the Big East Final (and they would've gotten that seed too.)

As for WKU....they have the indivivual RPI number and the SOS (40 and 109 respectively) to warrant a case....but there conference is ranked 18th out of 32 (counting Independents) in the nation...Like Hofstra's top 400 OOC SOS...That would be the easiest number to use to leave them out.

Well, I'm with the rest of you tonight.

FUCK DUKE!

My Jackets are up five at the half and they've held Redick to 4 points on 2-11 shooting.

Man after Reddick just hit that 3 Dickie V's dick sucking went crazy. He spent the entire timeout yelling about how great Reddick is.

And that was after he was bashing Duke like a little child at the beginning of the half when they weren't playing any kind of defense. Georgia Tech is all kinds of bad this year with them blowing a double-digit point lead at home.

You know, while I am amused at the success of the MVC it is a bit sickening to think that 5 teams from that league could get in the tourney. I doubt U of L is going to make the tourney, but seriously....U of L could take out anyone in the fucking Missouri Valley.

I mean come on, take Wichita St., Missouri St., or whoever from the MVC and put them in the Big East. Tell them to play UConn twice, Nova twice, Pitt, at Cuse and WVU....let's see if they go much better than 5-8 at this point. The MVC is going to get a bunch of teams in mostly because a lot of major confs. suck this year. Pac 10? Awful. Big 10? Only 3 for sure. ACC? Aside from Duke, UNC, NC St. and BC there isn't much. I mean what does it say when the friggin SEC is probably one of the more competitive confs. this year? SEC should at least get TN, FL, UK, LSU, and likely Bama (with Ark possibly sneaking in).

I have to disagree with you on the Big Ten. Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Michigan all definitely deserve to get in and Indiana would have gotten in to if they hadn't tanked the season after the Davis controversy. They're way better than the SEC, and while they lack a marquee team, I think that the Big Ten and the ACC are the only conferences that really have an argument as the second best league in America.

Oh that was my bad, Iggy. I meant to say the Big 12 might only get 3 in (Kansas, Texas, OU). The Big 10 will get in Ohio St., Iowa, Michigan St., Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois.

HUGE Game tomorrow. Probably the biggest rematch in Big East Conference History since the St. John's/Georgetown Rematch in 1985. Villanova Vs. UConn in Connecuit. If Villanova somehow steals a win in this one, then Villanova becomes #1 hands down in my eyes. (*Avoids the Gunshot from Iggy*) But I'm looking for UConn to torture the Guards of Nova all night long.

In local news. My Flying Dutchmen (Fuck this Pride Nonsense) beat our first ranked team (in the coaches poll, anyway) by taking down George Mason 77-66 at Hofstra Arena. Man, I know Dama has been to some historic places but the Arena is just an amazing place to play ball when it is full. It was rocking the whole entire time, and I don't think the Student Section sat down at all during game time. This gives Hofstra a signature win that it WILL need if it wants any shot at an at large.....

We can't lose to Drexel or some other dreg like Deleware or James Madison. Though a run to the Garden for the NIT wouldn't be bad at all considering we are in New York.

No worries. I'm about 98% sure that UConn's taking this one, so I don't see it becoming an issue. Villanova's had all kinds of problems on the road and I just can't see them winning in Storrs. UConn's actually the first team in the Top 8 of the Big East that they've had to face on the road this year.

What makes this game so much more important than any of the 2nd games of Pitt/UConn back when they played each other like three years in a row in the big east finals?

Reddick is having an awful game with just 9 points now I think, but he just broke the ACC scoring record. Go JJ go.

Will someone explain to me what UK was thinking with 13 seconds left today? Down 2 on the road to LSU. Take a time out. So who do you go to there? Perhaps Patrick Sparks, the guy who made two 3s that got you within 1 and then tied the game? Randolph Morris, who had 17 on the day? Of course not! Go to Sheray Thomas and let him shoot an airball...game.

U of L loses today to WVU by 4, another tough effort only to fall short. Thanks to the totally absurd Big East schedule we will likely miss the conf. tourney. Kill me now.
