MLB Spring Training Thread

TAMPA, Fla. -- Even before a pitch was thrown Saturday, the New York Yankees apologized to their fans.

The Yankees displayed a sign by the customer service booth on the main concourse, explaining it wasn't their fault Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Bernie Williams had departed for the World Baseball Classic.

"Thank you for expressing your concerns," the sign stated. "We are sorry that certain players will not be present for portions of spring training. These players have elected to participate in the World Baseball Classic. The World Baseball Classic is an event sanctioned by the commissioner of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. The New York Yankees did not vote to support this event. Any comments you have regarding the World Baseball Classic should be directed to the commissioner of Major League Baseball or the Major League Baseball Players Association."

The Yankees lost to the Cincinnati Reds, dropping to 0-3 during spring training.

New York abstained when baseball owners approved the World Cup in August 2004 at the urging of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

"We don't like it that well," Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said when spring training began. "If a player gets hurt, he's risking a lot. But it was Selig's idea and he wants to do it, so I suppose we're going to do it."

There's a fine line between opposing a concept and being a jerk about it.

If the Yankees fail to win the world series this year I'm sure they'll blame it on the WBC.

Hopefully this isn't a sign up things to come, but Torre left Myers in against righties against the Phillies. The lefty specialst has been a curse for the Yanks since Stanton left the first time, HOPEFULLY Myers works out.

It's not. The main concern with the first days is getting work in. In a real game situation, Torre would not use Mike Myers in that manner.

Pokey Reese has informed the Marlins that he might not be coming back to camp.

That all but hands the 2B job, to start the season at least, to "journey-man prospect" Dan Uggla who is a good hitter but apparently a weaker fielder.

I had hoped Uggla would win the job all along, so see you later, Pokey.

I'm seeing Felix Pie in action for the first time today. Hopefully this is one prospect that turns out, because he's been fun to watch.

Jerry Hairston got nailed in the head during the first inning, by the way.

I have to say I'm shocked ESPN isn't televising the United States exhibition game against the Giants today as they did televise the Puerto Rico/Mets game. It'd give them a chance to hype the tournament some more and give them a chance to get up to the minute Bonds updates from Pedro Gomez on what he's doing in his recliner.

No kidding. Michael Kay on his radio show here in NY has been so vehmently against it, especially about how "fair" it is for Jeter, ARod, Damon and Bernie to be "away" from the team for this long. He also asked about the Oriole pitchers as well, how it was "wasting" a year of having Leo Mazzone as the pitching coach because he won't have a spring to be with them

Its gotten to the point, where even though I agree with Kay's sentiments (that this is a half baked, thrown together, uncessary marketing ploy) he is going so overboard that A) I am now rooting for the WBC to be an overwhelming success and B) The Yankees to win the Wo... Okay, I can't say it, but you know what I mean...

It was amusing to hear Ken Singleton disagree with Kay on Friday's broadcast, albeit politely.

Phillies won their fourth straight today. I don't know if Michael Bourn is a future starter, but he is damn fun to watch.

Someone needs to make Steinbrenner shut the hell up. The world doesn't revolve around his precious team, as much as he'd like to think.

Not exactly spring training new, but Kirby Puckett had a stroke today at the age of 44.

I actually happened to be at the Twins-Indians game when he announced his retirement. Man that was a sad scene.

Glad to see I was right about Wells and thinking of an OLD and injury prone but potentially great rotation lead by Schilling, Wells, and Beckett. Hopefully the Sox can deal Arroyo or Clement for something of value.

Yeah, with the way the media is talking around here... it doesn't sound good for Kirby. Sad. It sounds like he really lost his way after retirement.

I think his early retirement had alot to do with it. It doesn't excuse what he was alleged to have done. There was problems adjusting to life outside baseball, though.

About as fast as Richard Hidalgo came to the O's camp, he's gone and probably not coming back. Supposedly his wife is sick, but rumors are that he's not happy that he had to sign a minor league contract and he hasn't had any AB's so far in spring training.

Markakis will be the O's starting LF on opening day if Hidalgo leaves and doesn't come back.

Stories all over the place regarding Bonds and his steroid usage. A new book, Game of Shadows, fully implicates Bonds and his years of steroid useage through extensive documentation and interviews. Seems like it was more than your run of the mill usage... this guy was a walking drug store.

I have long been a Bonds' apologist, but I think this about does it. I doubt he plays this year, and I would think this severely damages him having a shot at Cooperstown. Like or hate the guy, a sad turn of events for one of the game's most recognizable figures.

That's all it is.....stories. We don't know if any of it's true unless we hear it from the horses mouth. I'm anti-anything Giants, but until I know for sure, I won't assume anything. But see, I say that, yet I still think he took them. I don't know if I believe it to be to that extent though.

I knew the Mets weren't exactly the healthiest of teams, but I didn't think it was this bad. Cliff Floyd might be suffering from kidney failure? Yeesh.

Edit: In respect of Floyd's privacy (I guess), they don't mention in this story that the tests he took were to see if his kidneys were functioning properly.

Ok, I know its only spring training, but if Wright makes the rotation instead of Wang I'm honestly going to take a flight to Tampa and kill Joe Torre.

What's the harm? You give Torre about two or three weeks to indulge his veteran fantasies, and before long Wright will be on the DL again. Natural selection.
