spman Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 To my knowlege, the Wrestlemania shows have been released 4 different times. The original Coliseum Videos, the 1997 Collection Box, the 1998 Legacy Set, and the 2005 DVD release, each one being at different edits of the same shows. I know the original Coliseum versions of the early shows are edited to fit in a 3 hour time window, except for Wrestlemania 4 which is 2 seperate tapes, but also had exclusive backstage interviews and promos that were only on the Coliseum Tapes. Now as far as I know the Collection Box from 1997 are the shows completely as they were originally broadcast on Closed Circuit / PPV, and the Legacy Set from 1998 are just re-releases of the original Coliseum Tapes that are edited to erase any mention of Coliseum Video , and are also on much poorer quality tapes which had a tendency to fall apart. The DVDs from what I understand are a mix of both the original broadcast versions, and the edited VHS shows, with all mentions of WWF and copywritten music edited out. So really, in order to have the definitive version of the Wrestlemania Shows, you would need the Collection Boxed Set, along with the Coliseum Tapes with their exclusive content, correct? Can anyone clear this up?

Hell, when I watched WrestleMania 1 today (getting close to 22, time for the countdown) they even have an ad telling people to go to the lobby and buy stuff. They also kept Eye of the Tiger, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and the "Axel F" credits. Actually, in all the lists of things left off the DVDs, I don't recall anyone mentioning whether or not the Axel F credits remained. Anyone?
Jebus Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 I've got the 1998 legacy and got no complaints about it ...well, perhaps the quality of some of the tapes but it's no biggie. The tapes are all the Manias as shown on PPV live (theme music, merchandise ads, etc...all intact). Mania 11 is the "Encore Plus" version but I don't care.

It's not the live version, it's the replay with additional commentary on the event by Roddy Piper plus they show what happened the next night on Raw between HBK, Sid and Diesel to promote In Your House.

Guest bushwickray Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 I have the 1997 box set and aside from the picture quality at times, it's perfect, everything is intact as if you were watching it live. It's Wrestlemania the way God wanted it, unedited and uncensored. If you have that set, a good vhs copy of 14 and then 15-21 on the orginal dvd's then you have the ultimate Wrestlemania collection and I salute you.

JJMc Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 The Legacy box set is NOT re-issues of the Coliesum tapes. They are not edited like the Coliseum ones are. A good example is VII, where several matches are clipped right to the opening bell (i.e. no ring entrances). The Demolition match comes to mind. However, the '97 box set may contain even more of the original footage than these do from what I've heard.

Pre-match interview with Randy Savage at WM 8 or pre-match interview with Bret Hart at WM 9 for examples.

Guest CookieMueller Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 The edits aren't that bad. The only time the edits on Vol. 1 are glaring (off the top of my head) are when Koko B. Ware's tights have WWF on the back, they blur his entire ass. The Piper's Pit/Brother Love/Downey angle is cut pretty deep, but it needed it. And when they dub Hogan saying "WWE" at Wrestlemania IV (I think), you'll be laughing. If you know the Wrestlemanias by heart, then you'll notice a million things, but if you're like myself, and have only seen them a handful of times each, you won't notice more than one or two instances per Mania. Deon - I haven't watched any of 15-21, but the packaging doesn't mention it, so I would assume they're extraless.
