Jeter is too jealous to be respectful of A-Rod. Damn Mr. Potato Head. What kind of leader forces the greatest SS of all-time to move to 3B.

Let's not go nuts here.

And when your national team is obsessed with playing the worst fielding CF in the majors, they're going to allow some runs.

Who's that Al? Damon, Griffey? Haven't been watching much WBC.

Griffey's the only bat that has produced for the US, so blaming him for bad fielding is a bit silly. If Griffey was riding the pine we'd have been out in the 1st Round.

I don't think so. Games are won and lost on both ends. All I think is that Griffey should be moved out of center in favor of one of the better CFs already on the team. Since he's a productive hitter, DH him.

Hey Al, isn't the US squad a faily poor fielding team on the whole?

I think so. Jeter's seen by some as below average. Chipper Jones is awful, as is Michael Young. Those guys along with Griffey play prime defensive positions. The 1B slot is excellent however, as is catcher defense with Brian Schneider.

Buck in his infinite wisdom has used Chipper (2x), A-Rod, D. Lee and Teixeira as his DH's so he can keep the secondary guy at the corner spot in the lineup throughout the game instead of putting in some defense. I just saw that Teixeira is 0-12 with 3 K's which is beyond pathetic.

Also, for people wondering about the US in this tournament.

Japan plays Mexico today, and Korea tomorrow. If Japan wins both of these games, and the Korea game isn't like 8-7, or some high scoring shootout... the US is eliminated before even taking the field against Mexico on Thursday.

Although I don't see hardly any of their games, I thought that Chipper and Young were good with the glove.

Young is awful, ranked at or near the bottom of shortstops in almost every defensive metric. One poster at BTF says his range best resembles a traffic cone. That the Rangers' pitching is always bad would seem to support this. Griffey has declined considerably in the field since his injuries. He used to be very good, but not any more.

Memo to Gary Thorne, the Dominicans being a man short of a 30 man roster will probably not effect the outcome of the game. I'm sure they can finish a game with a measley 29 players.

You never know. That reminds me of that 20 something inning game like 20 years ago where Fernando Valenzuela had to play 2nd base. That was great.

It was 1B... well, I was close. I just remember the little tubby feebly making an attempt to jump for a ball going to right field.

Oh, and why couldn't Mexico save Loaiza until the US game? :anger:

Daniel Cabrera looked awesome tonight.

Hopefully he can carry some of that into the regular season.

Man, the ump's strike zone sure has tightened up this inning.

I thought he was making good calls, honestly.

VERY tense game, came down to the wire. Can't wait for PR vs. Cuba tomorrow, and Korea vs. Japan is gonna be a good one (Can Korea remain undefeated in the WBC)

Dominicans advance with a 2-1 victory over Venezuela.

Tomorrow is PR/Cuba and Korea/Japan. Both games will be televised somewhere besides English language television. PR/Cuba is another straight up elimination game. The United States almost entirely need a Korean victory in order to have a shot at advancing. However, the U.S. could also have a chance to advance if Japan truly clobbers Korea to the tune of eight runs allowed.

In that last inning, definitely. I was more commenting on the fact that in every other inning, his strike zone seemed ridiculously loose.

Well then I'd agree with you 100% there. I was mostly just listening to the first 7 innings of the game, but the 7 k's by Daniel Cabrera seemed a bit odd, and I did see some of those pitches.

...I REALLY want to see Korea vs. Japan tomorrow...wish they'd broadcast the game thing live.

Japan beats Mexico, 6-1.

Just need a 4-3ish win over Korea tomorrow, guys. :) Plus, Korea basically has nothing to play for.

Nope. The top 2 teams in each group play each other in the SF's.

This format was not created to give the US the advantage of playing none of the Hispanic teams until the final. Of course not.

Actually considering the geographic locations of everywhere, the brackets were chosen pretty smart (Other than italy, south africa, and netherlands, they weren't going to win anyhow)

All the latin teams WANT to play each other. That's BIG down there. If you take the usa (and maybe even mexico then) out of the bracket we're in, that makes it WAY too heavy on one side with quality teams (And it already is pretty heavy to the latin side)

I think it's just fine, I mean the u.s. isn't even likely to MAKE the semifinals at this point.

I agree about the Latin teams wanting to play each other... but, I don't see why it couldn't be A1 vs. B2 and A2 vs. B1 in the semifinal.
