A few days late:

Tom Fox's Body found

Josh Garner

March 11,2006

NewsChannel9

The body of former Chattanoogan Tom Fox has been found near a train station in Iraq Thursday night with gunshot wounds in the head and chest.

He was one of four Christian activists kidnapped last year. The 54-year-old Fox was living in Clear Brook, Virginia, but grew up in Chattanooga, and went to Chattanooga High School.

Officials say they have no information on the other three hostages.

John Roberson, who went to High School with Fox, just found out today of Fox's fate...

"My heart goes out to the family ... everything else is secondary to the family, I'm sorry. He was a good man; I'm sorry for his death."

Limbaugh on kidnapping of peace activists in Iraq: "I'm telling you, folks, there's a part of me that likes this"

On November 29, nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh read an Associated Press report about the apparent kidnapping of four Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) activists by an Iraqi insurgent group. Limbaugh announced that "part of me likes this." He explained: "Well, here's why I like it. I like any time a bunch of leftist feel-good hand-wringers are shown reality."

After suggesting that the story "could all be BS ... could all be a stunt," Limbaugh said, "We'll take it face value at first." Addressing the kidnapped CPT activists, Limbaugh said, "[Y]ou've met the bad guys, and you tried your technique on them, and now you're blindfolded in a room with guns pointed at you and knives at your throat. I don't like that." He then added, "But any time a bunch of people that walk around with the head in the sand practicing a bunch of irresponsible, idiotic theory confront reality, I'm kind of happy about it, because I'm eager for people to see reality, change their minds, if necessary, and have things sized up."

After a caller informed Limbaugh that CPT had recently ended an "Adopt-A-Detainee" letter-writing campaign in which religious congregations and anti-war groups were urged write letters protesting alleged abuses of detainees, Limbaugh added:

  • LIMBAUGH: [A]s warped as these people are, you know they're going to blame Bush for this. ... They wouldn't have been kidnapped because they wouldn't have been there in the first place if Bush hadn't gone and caused the war and created all these terrorists. I mean, these people are liberals, they're warped. Well, I mean, that's why there's --
I'm telling you, folks, there's a part of me that likes this. Probably, even with this, though, you know, they're not going to see the light of day. They're not going to --At that point, Limbaugh paused before saying, apparently to someone in his studio, "I know, let them take me out of context. I don't care anymore."

From the November 29 broadcast of The Rush Limbaugh Show:

  • LIMBAUGH: "Aljazeera has broadcasted an insurgent video today, shows four peace activists taken hostage in Iraq, with a previously unknown group claiming responsibility for the kidnappings. The unknown group is the Swords of Righteousness Brigade, and they said the four were spies working undercover as Christian peace activists, according to Aljazeera. Aljazeera said that it could not verify any of the information on the tape. The aid group Christian Peacemaker Teams has confirmed that four of its members were taken hostage on Saturday. German television broadcast photos today showing a blindfolded German woman being led away by armed captors in Iraq. Six Iranian pilgrims, meanwhile, were abducted by gunmen north of Baghdad. The pictures of Susanne Osthoff were taken from a video in which her captors demanded that Germany stop any dealings with Iraq's government, according to Germany's ARD television. Germany has ruled out sending troops to Iraq and opposed the U.S.-led war."

Yeah, all right. Now, let's take this at face value just for a moment. This could all be BS. I mean, we've never heard of the Swords of Righteousness Brigade. This could all be a stunt, but let's take it -- well, let's take it both ways. We'll take it face value at first, then we'll look at it as a stunt second. I said at the conclusion of previous hours -- part of me that likes this. And some of you might say, "Rush, that's horrible. Peace activists taken hostage." Well, here's why I like it. I like any time a bunch of leftist feel-good hand-wringers are shown reality. So here we have these peace activists over there. I don't care if they're Christian or not. They're over there, and as peace activists, they've got one purpose. They're over there trying to stop the violence. Now, if this German group fits the mold, they are probably blaming the United States and coalition forces for all of this. But more importantly, they believe that if they just go there, like these idiotic human shields before the war, if they just go there -- "Mr. Limbaugh, it's real simple, something you wouldn't understand because you've never been to conflict resolution. But it's real simple. If we go there, and we show them that we are people of peace, and that we want to stop the violence, and that we don't hold them responsible, they will see and understand that this is the way to bring peace."

Fine, they get kidnapped. They get kidnapped at gunpoint. If that version of this is true, then -- OK, you've met the bad guys, and you tried your technique on them, and now you're blindfolded in a room with guns pointed at you and knives at your throat. I don't like that. But any time a bunch of people that walk around with the head in the sand practicing a bunch of irresponsible, idiotic theory confront reality, I'm kind of happy about it, because I'm eager for people to see reality, change their minds if necessary, and have things sized up.

Media Matters

Sick. Truly a disturbed human being. Beneath contempt.

Limbaugh is stupid, but he's right that they shouldn't have been over there. These barbarian Muslim terrorists don't care about peace, they care about killing and destroying the West. To simply say that they're misunderstood or have a different world view is idiocy.

I could care less about Limbaugh, but going over to Iraq without weapons and helping the insurgents is a pretty dumb idea.

Any rational human being would use such an act to their advantage.

See kids? This is what happens when you let idealism become your shining light...instead of rationality?

Smart person who is against the war protests here at home, talks to people about why they're against it

Dumb person goes to Iraq to work with insurgents, to help them, and get captured and used as political bait.

EDIT:

Just because one is Muslim doesn't make them a barbarian. Islam is going through a reformation, something Christianity went through as well.

That too, was bloody.

To call them "Muslim" barbarians represents your complete lack of knowledge about whats really going on.

I didn't say all Muslims are barbarians. Many have stepped into the 21st century. The people that perpetuate these killings haven't, however. They are stuck in a bygone age.

Couldn't care less. When I have to fix your grammer its time to hang your head and cry.

I still don't get how people who practice a religion that means "peace" can truly believe people that tell them god wants anybody dead.

Still, its stupid to go over there thinking you can fix the situation with hugs and kisses.

Exactly how is trying to preach peace "helping" the insurgents?

I may be wrong, but my understanding was that the Christian missionaries that went over there willingly went into hostile territory to talk to the insurgency.

I used the wrong word (helping). Sorry CWM. Going over there sans weapons and hoping that you aren't taken advantage of is a pretty dumb idea.

Oh, and there's a great book about the evolution of the Islamic faith called "No God But God" By Reza Aslan.

Your use of "helping" almost completely alters your point, though, away from just saying they were dumb from putting themselves in harms way to sounding like you are justfying that they deserve it some how.

Regardless, I don't think it is fair to say someone deserves a horrible fate just because they risked their lives for something noble they strongly believe in. You may not agree with their methods, but its not like the methods the US government is using is doing anything to make the brain-washed radicals see us as anything other than what their leaders tell them.

The best way to end this would be for the U.S. to send SKBF over there to publicly speak to all of them. Within 15 minutes of the speach they'll all start cutting their own heads off.

On the contrary, they might be receptive to the idea of $10 computers and $20 DVDs which you can burn without burners. I think Iraq is the perfect place for a Food Man. He's like the milkman, but the Food Man.

Rush Limbaugh is the man, you traitors. Take that bone out of your nose.

Honestly, for all the bitching about left-wing media, I haven't heard a thing about this until I read a post on a wrestling board. I don't understand how he gets away with this shit.

Are you fucking kidding me? Next you're going to tell me the Tiananmen Square protests were a bunch of losers. Fuck you.

Dude, she quoted a line from Airplane. It seems more like she was mocking Rush by quoting the line.

Scorpius,

I never said that they deserved their fate. I'm merely not suprised by it, and I personally view their decision to go over there as pretty fucking stupid

Thank you for clarifying that. Your posts were, I feel, vague enough to be interpreted in the worst way possible.

Maybe if the Peace Activists had boils on their asses, they would have avoided going over there, kind of like the way Rush got out of going to Vietnam, fucking chickenhawk piece of garbage.

They were drafted to go over there? Shit, the Army was much less prepared then I thought they were...

Seriously, though, I agree with Y2J: Let it go already.

Anyways, this is pretty tragic; even if I disagree with most of the activist sentiment about the war, I'm not so low as to be glad about their death. Hopefully this will show peace activists 1) The Insurgency isn't someone that can be simply talked to and 2) Their efforts would be much better felt trying to show the Iraqis that the West can help them. Do charity work, help out with villagers, city-goers, whatever. If you think that the soldiers aren't doing a good enough job of helping Iraqis, then help out yourself rather than electing yourself 'diplomatic envoy'. That'll help out everyone in the end.
