Problem with Excel

I'm trying to do a baseball box score in Excel, and I'm running into a problem when I try to insert the innings pitched for the pitcher.

 

For example; I put that the pitcher pitched 7.2 innings, but when I move on to the next box it changes the 7.2 to "7-Jan".

 

If I try to put that the pitcher went 2/3 of an inning, it changes the 2/3 to "3-Feb".

 

Is there any way to change this?

I stay away from Excel, but how about maybe trying 7-2 or adding some extra space in-between the numbers?

Before putting the number into the cell:

 

- select the cells/rows/columns you're putting these numbers into

- go to Format > Cells

- click on the Number tab

- choose Fraction from the category list.

 

This will allow you to enter numbers like 7 1/3 and 2/3, no problem. Dunno why it changed 7.2 to 7-Jan...that's a weird one.

I work on Excel every day, and this is how I easily get past that problem:

 

In the cell, right before you enter your data, insert this ' that should work for you. However, it does make sorting often difficult, but cutting and copying is easy.

If you don't want all of your entries to be in fraction form, you may want to select "Format>Cells>Numbers>Text"

 

What you type is what you get in that instance.

 

I also work with Excel on a daily basis and it tries to think for you, assuming that you want everything in date form. Stupid program.

This is your best way to go.

 

Make sure to only do this with the inning column, though... as all whole numbers will be center-aligned if you do it for the entire sheet.
