Most underachieving college programs

Recommended Posts

What programs in college basketball and football do you feel should be better.

Football-Illinois, Missouri, Arizona.

Basketball-USC, Florida St, Miami Fl, Arizona St

Arizona St. in both, and especially both Arizona schools in football. Simply due to what a paradise it is here, they should be amongst the best teams in the Pac-10 every year.

That's the point of the thread. Naming programs you feel should be better. Outside the Sugar Bowl appearance. Illinois is an underachieving program in Football.

USC's going to get a Final Four under Floyd, but I don't know when.

Kentucky should be a hell of a lot better in football, as should Northwestern.

Florida St in both. There is no reason a program that gets this many top recruits cannot hold themselves to less than two losses in a season in college football and not even make the NCAA tournament in basketball. The teams ALWAYS lose to teams they shouldn't lose to and then beat someone they have no business beating. Next year they are supposedly getting one of the best recruiting classes in basketball so I don't know what the excuse will be.

San Diego St and UNLV in both sports.

Minnesota should be better in basketball. Good college basketball arena. Great fans when they have something to cheer for. Solid recruiting base in Minnesota. No reason with a good coach the Gophers shouldn't be a Top half of the Big 10 team most seasons. Maybe even compete for a conference championship every once in a while.

That's because Bobby Bowden is 1 of the most overrated coaches in college football.

With the recruits that OU gets and the history that they have and the coaching staff they have they should have more than one national title under Stoops. Dunno if they're underachieving but yeah......definitely underachieving in basketball though.

Rutgers in football and basketball. New Jersey produces a lot of Division I-A talent and most of them end up leaving the state for both sports, the best football players usually end up at Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, or Miami, and the best basketball players usually head to other Big East schools like UConn, Villanova, Syracuse, Louisville, and St. John's. It's so bad for the football program that Greg Schiano recruits a lot of his players from Florida.

A championship within the last 10 years and annual top 15 rankings and BCS bowl appearences, doesn't quite measure "underachieving".

sure it does...michigan has lost the 1st road game of the year and out of the national title chase every year by the end of september...thats underachieving for an elite program

Iowa in hoops. When was the last time they won a game in the tourney, and they've had some good (I'd never say great though) teams.

Indiana as of late espcially in hoops. They're football team just sucks but no one seems to care like at Dook.

I agree with this. For a program that's constantly ranked high but never quite getting to the title game, that's quite the definition of underachieving, especially since we all expect Michigan to do well also.

Virginia is pretty woeful. Out of the NCAA tournament for 5 years (though that's likely to change next year), and one of few major conference schools yet to taste a BCS game. Football's disappointing just because they've been sending so many great players to the NFL recently, but those individuals haven't been able to put it all together in the college game. Virginia Tech is the football power of the state, but Virginia has squandered countless opportunities to make a really great run in the past 5-6 years.

That's because Bobby Bowden is 1 of the most overrated coaches in college football.

Bowden takes a lot of the blame for hiring his stupid son at offensive coordinator but it seems the whole university has this "who cares?" mentality in a lot of games.

For example, the basketball team this year built big leads against both Florida and Wake. Then they decided to hang back and act foolish, throwing up shots from anywhere on the court, passing the ball into triple teams, and just generally playing lost. The football team does the same thing against "weaker" opponents and they always end up getting their ass kicked for it.

The whole school is just screwed in the head. Hell, the BASEBALL team should have done a lot better with the talent it has but they suffer from the same "whatever dude" disease.

Oregon basketall was supposed to be good last year and top 3 in conference this year. Malik Hairston was one of the top 3 players in the class of 2004 that didn't go pro and Aaron Brooks was a pretty big time recruit. The team hasn't had a season above .500 since Luke Jackson graduated in 03'. If next season isn't 20+ wins and a tourney appearance then coach Ernie Kent will most likely be fired.
