TWiB: Week of April 16-22

Recommended Posts

Julio FUCKING Franco just hit a 2 run pinch hit homer to become the oldest player in MLB history to touch 'em all.

Mets lead 3-2 now, after Mr. Wright redeemed his bootfest yesterday with a sparkling 5-4-3 DP to end the bottom of the 7th. It took the Mets 4 pitchers to get those three outs, but I'll take it.

OH, HOLY FUCKING SHIT, NO.

Gammons says that Bill Wirtz is interested in buying the Cubs. This is about a hundred times more frightening than any injury you can imagine.

How do you feel about never watching the Cubs play in Wrigley again?

Well, I sure picked a stinker to go to Fenway for tonight. For some reason, I decided to sit Kazmir on my fantasy team for this start, so every K was like a double dagger to the heart. Still, I can't believe how Fenway seems to look better and better every year; getting rid of those giant windows in the .406 Club was the best thing management has done since building the Monster Seats.

The Marlins' fire sales are going to look like minor downgrades in comparison.

Oh, the other part of the deal would be that Reinsdorf gets the Blackhawks. Ugh.

I think Selig would step in before allowing Wirtz to take ownership of the Cubs, provided Wirtz plans on doing to the Cubs what he did to the Hawks.

Why does he even want to own a team?

DEL-GAD-IT!

That ball was smoked. Lo Duca's was a rocket too that somehow died on the track, but Carlos obliterated that one. There's no way Petco's #'s are accurate since Delgado's looked to be 420+ easily, and barely went over the 402 sign and Lo Duca's looked to be over 400 too and didn't even reach the 396 sign.

Any Brewers fans know if the Brewers are going to wear their Braves throwback jerseys when they play Atlanta next week? I love those Braves vs Braves games.

I hate wikipedia, but it's much easier to do it this way.

William W. ("Bill") Wirtz (born October 5, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois) is the chief executive officer and controlling shareholder of the family-owned Wirtz Corp.

Wirtz Corp. is most notable as owner of the Chicago Blackhawks; Wirtz Realty, a large real estate owner in Chicago; and Judge & Dolph Ltd., a major liquor distributor. It also has interests in banking and insurance. Crain's Chicago Business in 2004 estimated the company's 2003 revenues as US$ 1.3 billion.

Wirtz (AKA "Dollar Bill") has a reputation for stubbornness and frugality. He is vilified by Blackhawks fans for allowing Bobby Hull (among many other stars) to leave the Blackhawks and for forbidding Blackhawks home games to be shown on TV. He is also blamed for the Blackhawks Stanley Cup drought, which has currently been the longest in team history.[1]

Under the ownership of Wirtz, the Chicago Blackhawks were named by ESPN as the worst franchise in sports (link).

How he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, I have no fucking clue.

Well, I doubt the Cubs could get any worse with Wirtz.

May as well save some money while being a failure.

Taking home games off TV and cutting salary to an extent that makes Billy Beane look like fuckin' Steinbrenner would certainly make them worse.

But then WGN would show more games with the good team from Chicago.

Before we proclaim the season over for Chicago, let's look at the schedule from now to May.

3 @ St. Louis

3 v. Marlins

3 v. Brewers

2 v. Pirates

2 @ Arizona

4 @ San Diego

3 @ San Francisco

3 v. Padres

3 v. Nationals

3 @ White Sox

3 @ Florida

3 v. Braves

3 v. Reds

All I'm really worried about there are the Cardinals, White Sox, and Reds. None of those other teams are really very good right now. Pirates are nothing, Brewers are cooling off, the NL West is mediocre, the Marlins and Nationals are battling for 5th, and the Braves are not division leaders just yet. No Mets or Astros until at least June. If they can stockpile those May wins, it'll help a lot. Plus, Wood and Prior should be back that month as well. The season doesn't have to be over already.

At least Wirtz is old. Maybe he'll die before that happens.

But yeah, the Cubs' schedule for the next couple of months doesn't look all that intimidating, although we should consider:

1) They seem to be at their most mediocre when facing other mediocre squads

2) I don't expect Lee back before the All-Star Break.

It's a shame that every year, we Cubs fans must have that mentality, "Well, if they can just hold strong until ______ gets back, then we should be okay."

The curse talk is still stupid, though. Wrists tend to get damaged when they come in contact with a fast-moving object (in this case, Drunkard Furcal).

The curse talk was in regards to a guy who already owns "the worst franchise in sports" trying to take over the Cubs.

Let's just take things one game at a time, cliche as it sounds. I don't want to go into sky-is-falling mode just yet. WE DON'T NEED DERREK LEE TO BEAT THE NATS AND MARLINS, GOOD LORD.

EDIT:

I mean, I'm as upset as anybody. However, I realize that as important as Lee is, we do not have a one-man team here like SF did last year. There are a lot of good things happening with the rest of the roster; we're not living by Lee's longshots like last (5!) year. We have good hitting, it feels like we're drawing more walks, the pitching should fall into place very shortly. John Mabry is no slouch; maybe he can step up and cover first in the meantime. As for not taking advantage of weak teams, all I can say is that maybe this year will be different. Maybe the rest of this team will be a step above their fans, and realize that they can make up for the loss of Lee (just 2) and not just concede the WHOLE FUCKING SEASON at only fourteen games in. Personally, I've waited too long for baseball season to start to just say "okay, year's over! that's it!" before May 1st, ferchrissakes. We've seen a lot of positives so far. Let's at least wait until tonight's game to hoist the white flag.

I'll be attending tonight's Phils/Nats game. The last time I attended a game at Citizens Bank Park, Chase Utley cranked a HR that bounced off a little girl's head (on the fly) in the row in front of me. My buddy (whom I'm going with tonight, and whom I attended the last game with) was telling me Chase smacked another one into the seat in front of him during 1 of the exhibition games against Boston he went to, so apparently Utley has these seats dialed in.

What a clunker. Who was this Nats pitcher? His fastball was topping out at 85 mph, and the Phillies couldn't do crap.

Furthermore, why in the hell did Manuel put Ryan Howard in the 7 spot in the lineup? Yeah, lefties are Howard's weak spot, but Charlie Manuel trying to overthink things can never lead to anything good.

I'm not even focusing so much on what they're losing offensively. They sport an awful defensive infield outside of Lee. I can't tell you how many errors I've seen him already prevent a couple weeks into the season. I can see their already shakey defense getting bumped down a few notches without Lee.

It doesn't help they're without two of their best pitchers, either. If this team had the rotation they envisioned, they'd just need marginal offense. But with mediocre guys like Marshall, Rusch, and Williams in there, they need all the offense they can snag.

I'm not throwing in the white flag yet, but we're about to find out what this team's all about.

Wow he does sound like an asshole. The blackhawks have sucked for the majority of the past 14 years since they went to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Penguins. Why does this guy block home games from being shown on tv??

God, it's been that long, hasn't it. Ostensibly, Wirtz feels that there's no money to be made in televising home games because that means fans won't buy tickets to the games. That's like Harold Ballard putting player names in the same color as the sweater so that scorecard sales won't go down. At least Harold Ballard is dead.

EDIT: Not as if there'd be much to watch, anyway; guy traded Belfour, Roenick, Chelios, and more for peanuts, and has continued this business practice to this day. We must have like fifty draft picks stockpiled away somewhere, but he probably traded those away for cash.

It's not like the Tribune have been great owners of the Cubs though...they basically make them good enough so that people in Chicago stay interested, and keep flocking to Wrigley. They don't have the mentality of wanting to win a World Championship.

Should be a fun game tonight in Toronto, Burnett vs. Beckett. I'll be missing it because of work, making it almost a week since I've been able to watch a Jays game.
