NHL 2006 Playoffs thread...

Recommended Posts

MacT just said Rollie wont be back for this series.

Oilers, it's time to go emo. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

I'll change my pick to Canes in 2.5 games. Watch them find a way now.

And Ladd couldn't be less at fault.

What a shame for a great game like that to be decided on a shit play.

I've read a lot about M-A Bergeron and I was unimpressed with him tonight. Two bad plays by him when he lost his stick (one was a penalty on a check from behind, the other was a leg check at one of the Adams) and the hit on Ladd into his own goaltender was equally stupid.

He's got to be on his knees praying that Roloson isn't seriously hurt. Otherwise, there'll be a public hanging in Edmonton.

Fuck yeah. And Don Cherry made a damn good point about him sitting there picking his nose when that breakaway goal was scored instead of racing back to center to block him after Staios lost the puck.

But MAN, Ward had some AMAZING saves.

Canes win the game and the series, barring Ty Conklin playing like an NHL caliber goaltender.

Are they giving a generic "injury" or since he's out for the series, have they announced what it is?

The TSN crew were speculating it was a knee injury. That would fit.

Like Verne Lundqvist's call at the '05 Masters, did you "EVER IN YOUR LIFE!" think that Dwayne Roloson would be the end all, be all to a Cup run by a team that has rings engraved by Gretzky, Messier and Coffey?

Great game, even I thought it was over when the Hurricanes were down 3-1 at the start of the third period. I would like to see Eric Staal step up his game, he hasn't been that effective the past couple of games.

Stupid Canadiens' fans, they actually want to blame the Hurricanes for the injuries to Buffalo's defesemen and Dwayne Roloson. I was actually surprised that Roloson was the only person injured in that collision, all three guys hit one another pretty hard.

I'm sticking to my prediction. If Edmonton does what they did in the other series (not allow scoring chances) they injury won't hurt nearly as much. Roloson's not a great goaltender.

The big problem with Conklin, is that he has a hard time stopping a simple unscreened shot from the blueline. He's the drizzling shits. Markkanen will probably play. I'm not too sure of how good he is.

Not very.

The Oilers are done without Roloson. He wasn't a great goalie, but he was a good goalie playing way over his head, and more importantly, he had the confidence of the previous three rounds to get him through this series. Neither of the Not-So-Dynamic Duo the Oilers are stuck with now are going to be able to handle the pressure of the Stanley Cup Finals, especially coming in ice cold as they are.

OLN had a comparison between Roloson and the Oilers' other two goalies by their regular season statistics with the team. Roloson's GAA was around 2.4, the other two's GAA was like 10.

Saddest thing is that he's barely exaggerating. They both boasted a meager .880 SV% and together had about a 3.00 GAA during the regular season. Considering the Oilers had the least number of shots on goals per game, and that we tend to do a really good job of limiting shots to the outside and clearing rebounds, that's kinda sad. That said, both Conklin and Markannen are good - not great - but good goalies for really short bursts. I think either one of them can do a decent enough job in net to let us win, so long as we have our stars live up to their potential.

I only saw Markkanen once, because I didn't pay too much attention to the Oilers after the break. They should have kept Morrison, he's better than the other 2.

What is everyone's opinion on Cam Ward? Future star at the position or a one-year wonder? I think he proved alot of people wrong with his performance last night, a rookie just isn't supposed to perform that great on the biggest stage in their sport.

Ward was a terrific goalie in junior -- two time WHL goalie of the year, CHL goalie of the year, won a Memorial Cup -- so what he's doing now doesn't really surprise me that much. He's going to be a keeper.

Morrison was better, no doubt about it. If he wasn't needed this season, he probably would have finished in the AHL this season and been brought up as our backup for next season. He was our number one development goalie, and it's a shame we had to waste him this season. I think that he was sent on waivers because they hoped he would clear them and we could claim him later. Markannen and Conklin get paid too much compared to Morrison to put down in the AHL, and Morrison could have used the experience more. I really really hope they try to move him back here next year from Ottawa.

Ward is just wow. Great positioning, great rebound control, UNBELIEVABLE highlight reel guy. I think that he's insanely hot this season, and he'll drop a little next year when they try to ride him. He'll be huge though, and I can honestly see him getting compared to Roy, Brodeur, Kiprusoff in the next few years. If his goalie career doesn't work out, he could make it big as a highway robber, based on the way he robbed Horcoff last night.

He did have a subpar reg. season. Growing pains, maybe.

I think it was 2002, when Ward was a WHL rookie, that I first took notice of him, and have kept his name in the back of my mind since then (like, it'd be interesting to see how this guy turns out). The Canes took him in first round that same year.

Sometimes it's hard for certain types of players to be backups. This is especially true for goalies. Some goalies are terrific if they have a starting job or they get regular work in, but are prone to slumps if they aren't used often. Ward could be one of those guys.

I'm still torn. All the pieces are in place with his junior success, and the wheels don't show any sign of coming off.

But there is the enevitable Playoff Hangover effect. Apart from Kipper, has anyone up and comer who had a playoff coming out party really continued their success afterwards? Bulin, Giguere, Irbe and (debatable) Kolzig have all cooled off pretty quickly.

That said, I think the former supercedes.

Fair enough, but Theodore hardly had great d in front of him in Montreal when he won the 02 Hart.

Ultimately, tho? I believe Ward has enough mettle and has already done enough to stay a starter, especially with Gerber's success in this post-season...which is unfortunate, because he also showed a lot of potential. The shitty thing for him is that it's not a seller's market for goalies right now, killing a lot of chance for him to catch on anywhere else.

I've heard that a few teams have shown interest in Gerber, I believe I read that Detroit has shown the most interest.

Why, with Legace and Osgood, why would they need Gerber. I'd say Tampa needs him more than anything.

And yes, who'd expect to see life-long back up Dwayne Roloson as a cup winner.

And further more, why is Conklin playing and not Markennin.

The Oilers, mainly Shawn Horcoff is complaining that Brind'Amour has been cheating in the face-off circle, by entering on an angle to win the draw.

MacTavish rotates the two of them as backups every game, it just happened to be Conklin's turn to sit on the bench. Markkanen will probably be starting the game tonight. Realistically, neither one is alot better than the other though.

As long of a time as he has been an effective faceoff winner, I don't think one team's argument should be taken too seriously. As badly as Brind'Amour beat them in the faceoff circle, they should be looking for some reason why.
