Dick moves by athletes

Recommended Posts

So, last night was fan appreciation night for the 76ers. The Sixers fans have stood by Allen Iverson for his whole career, more than anyone should have for a lot of it. This is potentially his last home game, so a lot of people go to show him some love.

Well, AI not only decides to sit out because of injury, he doesn't even show up until after the game starts and does not go to the court at all.

All it would have taken was for AI to show up, put on a fucking jersey, be introduced and sit on the bench for the crowd to be happy, but he can't even be bothered to do that?

That's my rant for the day. What other examples of players being dicks in little ways are there?

Maybe, he didn't want to deal with the potentially emotional moment of a crowd saying good-bye to him, when he is basically being phased out. That's hardly being a dick.

Examples of an athlete being a dick would be anything AJ Pierzynski did today.

Huh? Didn't want to deal with a crowd saying thanks to him? That would be a new one.

He wasn't shown to be emotional, joking around outside the arena as the game was getting under way.

I fear asking, but what did AJ do now?

AI showed up a minute before the tip time for the game last night, in jeans and a tee-shirt and then didn't bother to go in to the arena. I know that he plays injured all the time, and deserves a break, especially since the Sixers are eliminated, but this was probably his last home game ever for the Sixers. He could have at least had the decency to show up on time, get dressed, get announced and then sit on the bench. There was a large crowd there (especially to see two teams that were both sitting almost all their starters) and they were there to pay Allen respect. He showed absolutely none back.

He and Chris Webber were late. They should be fined by the team unless they have a good excuse, which is pretty doubtful. I don't see it as some huge dick move.

But seriously, don't play the fans of Philly card. They will turn on you in a second and they have plenty of times throughout Iverson career. The Philly sports writers have given him hell, and seroiulsy they are stupid for doing so.

Allen Iverson provided this illusion that the team was better than they were. When he carried that otherwise crappy team to the Finals that year, people in Philly were acting like that is what they expect out of their team, despite the fact the Sixers were pretty much a bottom of the barrel franchise for well over a decade before Allen turned them around. Countless dumb trades and signings, he still kept a team that for should have been a lottery team honestly in the playoffs.

I do think Philly should trade him because they aren't going to win a ring with him and they can rebuild for the future with what they get back from the trade. Hold on the Webber and let his contract run out and in 2-3 years you should have something.

But I wouldn't call this a big Dick move honestly. I think they were told to stay in the back after getting there so late honestly, and I agree it did make Cheeks look bad but King could have definiately handled himself better in frount of the press.

The whole situation with the Sixer is so freaking messed up at this point. What they need is a new GM who isn't crazy and has long term vision.

Billy King isn't getting fired anytime soon. Unfortunately in Ed Snider's(Flyers and Sixers owner) eyes, he's entered the same territory that Bobby Clarke is in, namely one of Snider's "adopted sons."

Actually, Comcast owns the teams.

Snider is the head of Comcast-Spectacor, the division of Comcast I believe that owns the Flyers and Sixers.

I never knew Snider had so much pull re: the Sixers.

And though it's sort of a dead horse being beaten now, anything Clarke has done in the past five years fits the topic. Shit, I could be naked and would run out of digits to count his misdeeds.

I do agree on him giving the illusion that the team was better than it was, leading to higher expectations. The problem was that Billy King then dismantled a team that was perfect for Iverson to play on (gritty guys who don't need shots but play good defense) and has put together this mess by overpaying overrated players.

King and Clarke have both been pretty terrible as GMs.

While ESPN (the Magazine) is a horrible hockey source, there was an article about Hatcher in one of the recent issues, and there's a quote by Clarke about how the Philly fans like a fight or a hit as much as a goal, so the team is kind of forced to play physical play & players, even at the expense of winning.

While I don't disagree with his assessment of the Philly fans, I think it's safe to say that Flyers fans would rather win a Cup with less physicality than NOT win a Cup with a bunch of goonery.

But what shit has he pulled? I don't remember him ever dogging it in a game, ever badmouthing the team, quitting on them....what has he pulled.

Honestly, I have to say that Allen Iverson is probably the easiest guy in the league to be a fan of.

Sorry I got here so late.

Iverson probably feared having batteries thrown his way, etc. Philly fans are the most fickle bunch of people I have ever seen, in baseball, football, basketball, hockey AND wrestling. You can never please the guys.

More than anything though, I've seen the fans just be assholes to one another.

The lack of championships have done this.
