How many matches do you consider 5 stars

Recommended Posts

I've heard someone say that no match can be given the full 5 stars because there is no such thing as a perfect match. While I understand their point,I disagree. How many matches have you given 5 stars to ?Please include what matches they are in your replies.

***** doesn't mean perfect. It just means that the match is one of the absolute best compared to all others. That's all star ratings are, a way to compare matches on a more pin-point level rather than just using words like "good" or "great".

Akira Hokuto vs. Shinobu Kandori (4/2/93)

Stan Hansen vs Kenta Kobashi (7/29/93)

Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada (6/3/94)

Akira Taue & Toshiaki Kawada vs Kenta Kobashi & Mitsuharu Misawa (6/9/95)

Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama (12/6/96)

Kenta Kobashi vs Mitsuharu Misawa (1/20/97)

Kenta Kobashi vs Mitsuharu Misawa (10/21/97)

My criteria are on my blog. It's a fairly traditional critical approach.

The most recent match that I've given ***** to is Joe vs. Kobashi. I watched it again a couple of months ago, and I still have no problems giving it five stars. I also gave five stars to Joe vs. Daniels vs. Styles from September last year. I thought a lot of that was down the the excitement and the bang-bang-bang from all the great spots, but when I watched it again I was surprised to find that I thought it was still as good.

Joe/Punk II ( I-***1/2 and III-****3/4). Actually, I perfer to watch JvP III over II because It manages to get you so caught up into because it actually has a finish and the intensity and pacing of the match is so different from the first two volumes. II, was just a better match period.

Joe/Kobashi was a hands down ***** and it still holds up as a spectacle and a match. I didn't rank it #1 in 2005 though, I actually gave that to Gibson/Danielson(but it's not a ***** match and I actually have it at ****3/4, which I'm sure is confusing).

Those were the last two ***** I felt comfortable with giving that prestige too. You might have to go back awhile to get another 5* from me.

It almost always has to include at least one Japanese wrestler, or be an indy match. Both these automatically add an extra star. There should be a six star match level for two Japanese wrestlers competing in an American indy match in the Northeast.

Lost my list and I already had written over a thousand matches listed as better than Joe vs Punk II (no offence meant to either wrestler). I was going for 5000 better than Joe vs Punk and 1000 better than Kobashi vs Joe (good match). Curses, curses, curses, curses.

While I understand selling, psychology, etc I don't overanalyze matches like most folk around TSM do. A five star match to me has to accomplish what any good match should. Entertain me and get the crowd in the building going. If it did those two things and did them excellently, then

No wonder you can't get any action, you can't even properly rate wrestling matches.

Because Lord knows girls knowadays won't touch a guy who can't rate a wrestling match. Last time I got any action, me and the girl had to go through my list of 5 Star matches before we got it on (She wanted to make sure it was up to standard) and let me tell ya, a couple of questionable 5 star matches almost cost me.
