Diego Corralles v. Jose Luis Castillo

Recommended Posts

So if you have been following these guys at all, you would know their first fight was probably FOTY with Corralles going down twice in the final round before rebounding and TKO-ing Castillo.

Their 2nd Fight, on PPV...Castillo avenged his loss with a vicious left jab to Corralles Jaw for the KO....I forgot what round, the sixth maybe.

Two weeks from Saturday they are getting it on for the rubber match and Showtime has blessed all of us boxing fans by not even putting it on PPV...(a fight I would have heavily considered buying). It is on plain old Showtime.

Corralles being the hometown guy from Sacramento or the greater outlying area to be more accurate, is who I want to win, but something tells me that Castillo is going to draw him into another war on the inside where Castillo is superior. Corralles had much success in the first fight when he kept his distance and used his jab, and he survived the war, but in the second fight, Castillo didn't waste time as soon as the fight went to the inside he start throwing punishing blows and connected on a vicious left jab the ended the fight.

Thoughts?

Last night on some local spanish station, they were just randomly playing a replay of the Castillo/Mayweather fight. That is a fight I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch of.

Oh and Tarver said Hopkins is going down in 5. Thoughts?

I think Diego can win, but Castillo is the favorite and will likely win.

Hopkins style wise I think will pose a big problem for Tarver.

I think Diego COULD win too, but he has to stay outside, use his reach advantage and box. My brain says his pride will start fucking with him though and when the crowd demands a brawl, he will give in, and let Castillo bring the fight inside, exchange with Castillo for a round and get caught with another left hook.

I dunno, I kind of think Tarver is a matchup problem for Hopkins. Hopkins likes to stand around for the first half of the fight, and Tarver isn't the type to stand around, him being the natural light-heavy, has me thinking that Tarver figures he can walk through the jab and just start wailing on Hopkins, dictating the pace of the fight.

Hopkins doesn't have a style. He adapts to whatever his opponets weakness are. Tarver is not going to be able to land the punches he did on RJJ or Glen Johnson, because defensively Hopkins is beter then both fighters.

You are correct in that his defense is great, however, he can't afford to wait around like he did against Taylor, and expect to just bring the fight in the later rounds. Tarver has made it clear that he is going to be aggressive from the opening bell, which if history tells us anything, it probably means Hopkins will lose rounds early hoping his opponent gets tired and he can bring it on later in the fight. Tarver is also a big puncher and the natural light-heavy. Hopkins is the one moving up in weight.

Well that strategy could work considering Tarver always fades in the late rounds and his stamina is pretty dreadful.

But I do agree that Hopkins shouldn't wait until the late rounds to get at Tarver.

B-hop should retire. Tarver is prone to boring fights. Lamest ppv main event in years.

The subject of this thread - not lame.

The Taylor-Hopkins fight is still going to blow.

Whatever, Hopkins is my favorite fighter problay all time, so I'm going to have to watch this fight. If he wins, it would be amazing, but it's likely going to be Tarver by UD.

Fuuuuck. I have just been informed I have to participate in this 24-hour relay "Walk for the Cure" thing. It starts Saturday at 10am and goes till Sunday at 10am. Great just Great. Tivo will be taping this fight, and I will basically have to shut myself down from my cell phone and any sports news for 24 hours so the fight isn't spoiled for me.

I don't have Showtime and would have ordered this fight on PPV. Boooo.

Hopefully it'll be free preview time.

There may not be a fight to Tivo thanks to that fat motherfucker not making weight AGAIN.

Castillo fails to make weight for fight, title is off

June 2, 2006

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

LAS VEGAS -- Jose Luis Castillo failed to make weight Friday for his lightweight title defense against Diego Corrales, throwing the third fight between the two men into jeopardy.

Castillo never came close to the 135-pound limit, weighing in at 140 on his first try and 139½ a few minutes later. It was the second consecutive time he had failed to make weight for a fight with Castillo.

If the fight goes on Saturday night it will not be for the lightweight title because Nevada boxing regulations allow a fighter only to lose two pounds after the first weigh-in.

Promoters were negotiating whether the fight would go ahead as a non-title bout, though Corrales' trainer, Joe Goossen said he would advise his fighter not to fight.

"I would say pull the plug on it," Goossen said. "He (Corrales) drained himself to make 135 and the other guy didn't have to do it."

The missed weight was a repeat of the second fight between the two men in October when Castillo weighed 138½ pounds. Castillo knocked out Corrales in the fourth round, and Goossen said Castillo was stronger because he didn't have to make the weight.

Castillo was visibly drawn and had trouble getting up while lying on the stage at the weigh-in. The concern over his weight prompted the WBC to weigh him at various times in his training, and Nevada boxing officials said he would forfeit up to 25 percent of his $900,000 purse if he was over the limit.

None of that helped Castillo get anyway near the weight limit, and his own promoter, Bob Arum, angrily accused his fighter's camp of lying to him.

"It's disgusting," Arum said. "If I was Corrales I wouldn't fight."

Corrales said he would spend the two hours allowed before Castillo's final weigh-in to decide whether to fight.

"A lot of things are going through my head right now," said Corrales, who weighed in at 135 pounds.

Corrales was to make $1.2 million for the fight, and there was a good possibility the two camps could negotiate a settlement and let the fight go ahead as a non-title bout. The fight was expected to draw a crowd of more than 10,000 and was to be televised by Showtime.

"I thought all along he wouldn't make the weight," said Corrales' promoter, Gary Shaw. "It's perpetuating a fraud on the public. Don't do the charade."

Corrales and Castillo engaged in one of the great fights of modern times last year, with Corrales getting off the canvas twice in the 10th round to stop Castillo in a battle that left both fighters battered and bruised.

The rematch, though, came off only after Castillo agreed to forfeit some of his purse, then made the most of it by landing a crushing left hook in the fourth round to stop Corrales.

Goddammit, this is fucking bullshit. Fucking Castillo. I want to see this fight badly, but if I am Corrales's camp I dunno if I go forward with the fight. This happened last time and Castillo ended up like 20 pounds heavier at the sound of the bell giving him an distinct advantage.

Fight is off. Castillo is pathetic...to me, this is as embarassing/disgraceful as Mike Tyson's stupidest moments. Can anybody respect Castillo after deliberately failing to make weight for two consecutive world title challengers? Unreal.

No one should ever sign to face that guy again, and when he does eventually move up in weight, none of the sanctioning bodies should ever give him a title shot. Blackball the fatty from the sport.

A WBC supervisor said both the promoters and the Nevada Athletic Commission should have known Castillo was having trouble with his weight because he was weighed 30 days out and missed a target weight of 148 pounds and again a week ago and missed a target of 142 pounds.

What a piece of shit.
