Former Senator/VP Candidate Lloyd Bensten has died at 85.

I have thought for awhile that had Bentsen led the ticket in 1988 (preferably with somebody besides Dukakis) he would have won the presidency that year.

He could've won, but everyone on the left would eventually complain, because the guy was just as deep in the pocket of big business as most Republicans, which is precisely why he had a better shot than Dukakis. But then again, why vote for a fake Republican when you can get the real thing, and all that jazz

Im not saying Lloyd Bentsen was better/worse than anyone else...but the 'pundit' in me says he would have defeated Bush for the second time had he led the '88 ticket. Dukakis ran almost as awful a campaign as John Kerry.

Bentsen probably would've been a much better campaigner, and was definitely a better public speaker than Dukakis, so yeah, I think he could have beat the Bush the Elder.

Which would've been funny in retrospect, because it would've made "Man, I wish we elected Bush instead of that big-business big-government Texan" possible. I sure say that these days!

Lloyd Bentsen was also a Secretary of the Treasury, and he defeated George H.W. Bush in the Texas 1970 US Senate election.
