Chazz 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 With gas prices being what they are today, I figure there might be some people who may be bold enough to try this, especially to a small and/or busy gas station with no security camera's. Anybody?
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 People used to do that all the time, even when Gas was dirt cheap but with prices as they are, nearly 90% of stations are monitored. It's also why probably 90% are pre-paid* *Made-Up statistics, but probably close enough to reality.
Chazz 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 I heard a story the other day that the thing some people are doing nowadays is going to gas stations during the wee hours of the a.m. fully disgusied, (usually with a hoodie covering their face(s)), with black electrical tape or duct tape over their licence plate, then filling their tank full and taking off. I never heard of shit this bad until now.

CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 In March 2004, I drove off by legit accident without paying. No threats, or anything, but they did tell my stepdad. I wen tback the following day, which I would have anyway. Its worth noting that at that point, a price of 85 cents a litre was absolutely outrageous to evem fathom. Guest InuYasha Report post Posted May 26, 2006 In Texas, it ain't worth it. Even on your first offense, the Judge can yank your driver's license for up to 3 years.

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 For those that gas up and take off, I hope their vehicle combusts and they die a painful, fiery death. When I worked at the Quickie Mart we had drive-offs when gas was $1.06/gallon; I can't begin to imagine what it must be like now. However, even back then during the third shift many stations had a "prepay" requirement; any station that doesn't have this policy now deserves to be ripped off. One reason some places which still don't require pre-pay do this to encourage more business inside the store (which is where the stores make their money), but then management gets all pissed off when their cashiers can't chase down on foot every vehicle that bails out on paying. Chazz 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 You're a bad apple, Chazzles. Nah. I love the cops and the law way to much to do anything like that.

the max 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 I was working at a convenience store (not for them, but for my job) and a guy in a corvette drove off after filling up. The owner/manager got into his truck (I think he had a Yukon) and went after the guy. The vette apparently didn't think he'd have any repercussions because he was apparently in no hurry. The vette stopped at a light in the far right lane (it was a three lane road). The owner got into the far left lane and swerved in front of the vette, rendering him unable to go forward. There was a massive traffic jam and the police were called, etc.etc. The owner/manager got his money and the police found out that the vette driver had two outstanding warrants... fun story that I overheard. Quik Trip here in Omaha has introduced a card that you put into the credit card reader if you're paying cash. This card has your info on it (DL #, name, etc.). You run it through the slot, pump the gas, go in and pay. They verify at the cash register whether you did indeed come in and pay.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 Seems easier just to use a credit card -- mine gives me 5 percent cash back with a fuel purchase.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 Seems easier just to use a credit card -- mine gives me 5 percent cash back with a fuel purchase. I found that with DEBIT cards (not sure if it's every bank, but this happened with both of mine), the bank automatically takes out 50 bucks in addition to what you actually put into the vehicle and keeps it out until their computers and the gas station's computers can verify the true amount with each other...then it puts the 50 bucks back into your account...this could be a day...could be longer. Weird, becuase no other place does that, just gas stations when you pay at the pump.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2006 Yeah, some banks here do that with Debit cards. I don't use them, but I've seen signs on pumps talking about this. I don't know how often this is done, but there's a bank in Ohio that charges a fee every time you use your debit card.
Guest Brian Report post Posted May 26, 2006 Why do this and risk getting in big trouble when you can have it siphoned off someone for you. I still get my gas at $1.25 a gallon.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted May 26, 2006 Absolutely not worth it for $50. Cheap bastards.
